^^In the smallest of defenses for RCA, I'm sure Kelly herself was gung-ho about HBS b/c it featured River's heartbeat. The promo for that was adorable and I understand the sentimentality...but it should have been single #4 (maaaaaybe #3), if it had to be a single at all. Or better yet, she should have put that heartbeat in TYH so we could all be happy. It's kind of weird b/c any other time we heard about a song Kelly wanted/tried to fight for as a single, Kelly was right IMO.
I remember there were like ten different suggestions at the time for how Kelly could have spun that era (including one from you) and every suggestion was light-years better than what we actually got.

Love that duet! They both complement each other so well and Alicia sounds really incredible.

Am I the only one that hears some hoarseness when Alicia goes into the "and I'm feeling good." It's on the "good" where I hear it.

Despite the good numbers from the All I Ever Wanted and Stronger eras, I think the general public more or less checked out with Kelly after My December. She's obviously done amazing things chart-wise and performance-wise since then. But those who don't follow pop music closely could've easily missed her post-MD. I know multiple people who didn't even realize "Stronger" was a Kelly Clarkson song years after it dropped. And I can't tell you how many times I've brought up Kelly and people say "Oh yeah, she went country, didn't she?" or just fixate on her weight.
Combine this lack of public awareness with the musical inconsistencies of Piece By Piece and Meaning of Life and she was kind of doomed to underperform in the streaming era. Piece By Piece isn't a bad album, but its pleasant AC-leaning synthpop wasn't going to pull big numbers regardless of single choices (although the juvenile nature of "Heartbeat Song" probably made things even more confusing). Her lack of image that era probably didn't help either. As for the success of "Piece By Piece" (the song), it was a perfect storm of great vocals, genuineness, and Idol-ending nostalgia that made it such a "moment." But one "moment" from an artist that hasn't really been on the public's radar since 2007 isn't enough to suddenly propel that artist to her previous glory a decade later.
Then Meaning of Life dropped nearly two years after the "Piece By Piece" moment, featuring a sound totally different from her previous records. While "Love So Soft" is a definite lyrical upgrade from "Heartbeat Song," its hooks don't command attention like a "Since U Been Gone" or "Stronger." Even with a new image and proper backing from a new label, a song like that from an artist of Kelly's current standing was bound to get lost in the shuffle, especially in an increasingly fragmented musical climate.
I'm not expecting any wonders, but hopefully The Voice can turn this era around a bit. And Kelly's proven time and again to be a "comeback kid" of sorts, so I look forward to her proving me wrong yet again.

Great music sung by great vocalists. Thanks for the link. By the way, since the subject of Love So Soft came up in the previous post, I have a gentle and serious question. Can any one tell me what "Love So Soft" means? Thanks in advance. It's Kelly's response song to Ariana's "Love Me Harder."

Am I the only one that’s not here for any more falsetto? I’m kind of over it already. Bring back some full force belts ASAP.

Yes. Not difficult to say songs that perform badly are missteps. It's in the past. The proof one way or the other is there. But while we're sharing our insights...Waterworld was a HUGE misstep. But you know what Titanic was a good move. No, I disagreed with both those choices at the time of release too. I knew they would lose the era a lot of momentum. I'm not saying I'm Clive Davis here (wink wink), but I knew those two weren't right.

And there's absolutely nothing substantive or provable to say one way or the other whether your fantasy picks for whatever singles at whatever moment would have been ginormous hits or even more miserable flops, since you're trying to prove a negative. How convenient.

It makes me wonder where she'd be in her career if the albums had gone Thankful-Breakaway-All I Ever Wanted-Stronger-My December-Hits-Wrapped in Red-Piece by Piece-Meaning of Life.
Hindsight is 20/20 but anyway. Hopefully the Voice brings her back front and center.

AIEW wouldn't exist had MD not came before it, though.

A bigger part of me wonders what would have happened had BTHE not been on Breakaway and was the lead single (maybe even title of album instead of MD) following. They went in last minute and did that one. Which clearly paid off, but imagine how much bigger MD could’ve been with a dark, poppy ear-worm as the lead single.

Honestly, I prefer that over her painfully trying to sound like 2012/13 Kelly, but it comes down to personal taste. I would love for her to sound like then, but I'm happy she found other vocal areas to shine with. For example - her belts in 'In The Basement', 'The Cry Inside' and the BG-vocals into the last chorus of 'Love Goes On' ARE AWFUL to me. I am glad there is none of that on 'Meaning of Life'. Watching most of her My December promo performances, I'll take this Kelly any day.

I don't ever seem to have a problem with Kelly's singing. So I'm here for falsettos, belts or anything else she wants to serve.

I'm sorry I don't mean to be rude to my queen Alicia Keys whose voice has crashed and burned but seems to be much much better here!! But who runs the girls now? KC I said who is in charge of the girls? KC When she opened her mouth I literally died. She sounds so amazing. Again who is in charge of the girls? Kelly!

That really was a master class vocal. I didn’t hate all the falsetto—I retract my above statement. That was great.

I had my doubts about how well she'd be able to handle singing that live and still do the recording justice, but she's adapted it to a live setting quite nicely. I like the way they're styling her too.

YAS @ serving vocal slayage to start off my Monday morning. 2013 is alive again. So glad "Didn't I" got a TV spot, too--she went OFF at the end (...and off rhythm in the beginning lol). Also the meaning of pairing those songs together is not lost on me. She looks so good too--love the styling choices. Peep these shoes. She couldn't move much but her energy level just felt higher here--better looks to the camera, more commanding stage presence even while stationary. ETA (from ATRL) post-Today show performances: iTunes USA 1500: #96 I Don't Think About You #124 Love So Soft #649 Stronger #712 Whole Lotta Woman #1406 Piece by Piece #1416 Since U Been Gone #1441 Didn't I And the album is at #26. Damn.

That's a perfect live arrangement and performance of this song.
