I'm still surprised at Invincible's lack of success. I didn't expect it to be super popular but it didn't even chart on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Total misstep though. Same mistake she made with IDNHU tbh. There were so many potential hits on AIEW (I Want You, IICHY, Cry) til this day it makes me sad that IDNHU was #2. Just such a randomly themed song.

I heard Invincible on the radio maybe 3 times, and it was sped up so much that it didn't even sound like her. What it did sound like was awful, so that certainly didn't help its case. I think I recall its callout being really bad.

Yes. Not difficult to say songs that perform badly are missteps. It's in the past. The proof one way or the other is there. But while we're sharing our insights...Waterworld was a HUGE misstep. But you know what Titanic was a good move.

I'm happy with those sales I guess considering where she's at in her career and the sales climate, but I was hoping she'd still be a better seller for a few more eras.

This is doing much better than I expected on HAC. However, it is no where to be seen on AC. The #50 song only has 18 spins and Kelly isn't on there so she is basically getting no play at all on that format. I thought they pushed it to both HAC and AC? Why would AC completely ignore it?

I don't want to read TOO much into it yet, but the coordinated HAC adoption of this so far has an air of Atlantic calling in some ;) ;) favors. Hopefully the adds date can come through and audiences are receptive and deliver our queen a hit.

How many albums has it sold? According to a WW-Sales-Tracker-Twitter-Account (data taken from official WW chart sources), it has sold around 300k WW so far - 170k of them in the US. (It would take too long to find it again, but the number is legit) Not bad considering LSS... flopped. The album did as much as PBP did at the same point, even though HBS had moderate success. I'm surprised the album isn't already certified gold already. 170K album sales, plus a gold certification for at least one single so far ("Love So Soft") would perhaps equal a gold album nowadays?

The album sales are a bit disappointing but I'm still optimistic about the era.

IDTAY performances on The Today Show + Seth Meyers next week will be telling of how well this single will perform. It's still super early but I haven't seen super encouraging metrics so fingers crossed :)
That being said, it's still 69 cents but Love So Soft's longevity on iTunes has been super impressive. At #129 right now

The shitty callouts for LSS still absolutely baffle me, and I still believe there was a scenario in which that song became a hit. Not that there wasn't much more Atlantic could have done, besides a big commercial (but it's not like they could just check that promo box and it's done), but whatever moment that needed to happen to get people to really give that song a chance just didn't happen and it will forever irk me.
We've got a couple unexpected hits since her commercial peak with "Stronger" and "Piece By Piece," so if this just the phase of her career where it's more about the artistic/musical output and the commercial success just never comes around again, I'll be more ready for that next era. This album felt so built for/around seeing bigger mainstream success that it's a bummer this time around.

The move to Atlantic was great for her artistry and they seem a better fit. RCA is terrible after single one for every artist, but they sure pushed the bejesus out of Kelly's first singles at radio.

Great music sung by great vocalists. Thanks for the link. By the way, since the subject of Love So Soft came up in the previous post, I have a gentle and serious question. Can any one tell me what "Love So Soft" means? Thanks in advance.

Kelly better give us a blues album one day! I expected this style for Meaning of Life tbh, but I'm patient. That was amazing and a Kelly & Alicia duet is a song I never knew I needed! They sounded better than Kelly & P!nk!

It's nowhere near Gold in the U.S. 1500 on-demand streams equal 1 album sale, if I'm not mistaken. So, a Gold single wouldn't contribute all that much to the album.

I'm surprised the album isn't already certified gold already. 170K album sales, plus a gold certification for at least one single so far ("Love So Soft") would perhaps equal a gold album nowadays? It's nowhere near Gold in the U.S. 1500 on-demand streams equal 1 album sale, if I'm not mistaken. So, a Gold single wouldn't contribute all that much to the album. Right. 150 streams -> 1 song purchase, and 10 song purchases -> 1 album. So a gold single (500k equivalent track sales) would only convert to the equivalent 50k albums. Kelly is probably at 240-250k SPS right now. Two more gold singles (or one platinum one) plus Voice exposure would keep the album sales chugging just enough to push 500k SPS in the end. For comparison - PxP (the album) was at about 210-220k hard sales the week before she performed the title track on Idol. Heartbeat Song was certified platinum by then, while Invincible contributed a negligible amount to SPS. PxP album got a gold cert a couple of two weeks after the Idol performance, IIRC. I don't think Kelly has lost any ground from the PxP era; unfortunately it seems that era set the sales pace for whatever she released next. We'd probably be looking at different numbers if MOL was coming off the back of her Stronger/GH/WIR stretch. Only mildly related, the PxP album is highly underrated IMO. Just heard "I Don't Think About You" on the radio. Is it the current single? It is!

Omg so now I fully need an Alicia/Kelly duet? TAKE MY MONEY. Haven't heard Alicia sound that good in years tbh. Beautiful. [By the way, since the subject of Love So Soft came up in the previous post, I have a gentle and serious question. Can any one tell me what "Love So Soft" means? Thanks in advance. Outside of the song, it doesn't technically mean anything--it's a turn of phrase the songwriters created, and in that context, it means a love that's amazing, supportive, precious, etc. Sort of like how "Rolling in the Deep" took a slang British phrase "roll deep" and turned it into a new-ish turn of phrase for the song. I don't think Kelly has lost any ground from the PxP era; unfortunately it seems that era set the sales pace for whatever she released next. We'd probably be looking at different numbers if MOL was coming off the back of her Stronger/GH/WIR stretch. Only mildly related, the PxP album is highly underrated IMO.! Agreed about PxP lowering her commercial success bar. I actually like the song as a youthful, lovey-dovey bop, but I think "Heartbeat Song" did far more harm than good to her overall standing and GP reputation than I initially realized. Unless it smashed, there was no reason for Kelly to release a song so wholly without substance at that point in her career. It was too junior, too bland, too "she no longer brings anything to the table." "Invincible" wasn't good enough to overcome that narrative, and under that guise actually fed into it, and then came the horrific radio remix of "Piece By Piece" that would have fully cemented her fate had she not broken through with that stripped Idol performance/version. I do think PxP is a stronger album on the whole than it will ever get credit for, dutifully fulfilling her RCA contract while delivering some of her strongest cowrites and actually (mostly) shedding her pop/rock sound years before she could really commit to that with MOL, but the inclusion of the would-be singles and her image during that era more than a decade into her career as a pop female put a lot of nails in that coffin. Which is a shame, because--as you said--had "Love So Soft"/MOL followed the Stronger/GH/WIR resurgence, we'd be looking at a totally different era. So basically fuck RCA, chapter 72.
