I’m content with Kelly making whatever kind of music she wants to as long as it’s not pandering to radio in hopes of attaining a "hit" because that’s just an exercise in futility at this stage of her career to me.

Kelly should also do that for her own songs plus unreleased songs.

What happened to the more R&B infused route they mentioned some months ago? Her voice fits R&B so well I wouldn't mind a cover album of some of her favorite R&B/Soul records. We got that last album. One thing I've learned is regardless of style of music the R&B is usually in her voice already. So I agree would love more rnb and soul but I want variety. I want a big pop ballad, I want her take on disco/dance and some jazzy and eclectic stuff. Free of being in the lane of Katy and Taylor and those chicks, she should continue to push the envelope and experiment with her incredible instrument that most dont have.

I would die for a full jazz album from her. "Why Don't You Try" and "Every Christmas" really are some of my favorites from her so a full album of music similar to those and even more traditional jazz would be a dream come true. Really a good chunk of Wrapped in Red is jazz influenced, so I'm imagining am album of similar quality, but entirely original and secular.

Ok, I’ve decided we need a Kelly and Lizzo collab. Lizzo is blowing up and is about embracing her body. Imagine how amazing this could be. They need the right song, obviously. Get it done! Imagine Lizzo adding on to Whole Lotta Woman?!

Imagine Lizzo adding on to Whole Lotta Woman?! ...Did not know I needed this until right now. With as much as Lizzo's back catalogue has defied the norm and gotten new attention as of late, let me dream that Kelly could do it too!

I wouldn't mind her going a different route than her last album at all (which aside from a select few tracks is not the masterpiece many seem to claim imo, not even her strongest effort). I am interested in hearing what she develops regardless.

How awesome would it be if, in addition to covers, she occasionally did a song or two of her own (a non-single) on her show? In a perfect world, she would perform some unreleased tracks at some point too...

I do think her talk show will be a success. She has the personality for it and it’s not she’s just someone who has faded into irrelevance trying to use this as a platform to spark heir career again. Young/middle-aged moms seem to be her biggest fan base anyway, which works great for a daytime tv gig.

Nobody: Me: So I've been giving it some v useful thought and I think, unjustly using full 20/20 hindsight, this would have been the ideal single release order for MOL:
1. Whole Lotta Woman (Move You still released alongside) 2. Love So Soft 3. Would You Call That Love 4. Meaning of Life
LSS is the unequivocal best hope for a smash on the album, but I think it caught some people off guard sound-wise, and the band didn't quite capture the punch the recording has live for a while into the promo cycle. And since it wasn't a smash, let's start with WLW. For a few reasons: 1) It would be a part of pop culture just in time for the election, and could easily become the rallying cry of those first women's marches and protests, 2) It's written by Kelly, so that would really lend itself to the "new label, new outlook, new respect" narrative, 3) She kills it live every time, 4) It's a borderline novelty song and those are best delivered first when you can either move on quickly or let it ride, 5) Given a LSS video budget they could have done something absolutely hilarious, and 6) Could it really have done "worse" than LSS?
Follow that up with LSS and I think the public will be more "ready" for this sound, and I think even a slightly lower barrier to entry could have helped the song a lot. WYCTL is a safe, sparkly spring-friendly track that can lure back anyone turned off by the new approach. Then my gut says to just finish it off with the showstopper title track, but if those first singles saw success, try "Heat" first for a cute summer jam and then wrap it up with MOL.
Separately, I hope this radio silence is because she's knee deep in recording for the next album.

Separately, I hope this radio silence is because she's knee deep in recording for the next album. I am all over "Whole Lotta Woman" being the lead as it is the standout song of the album. But I still don't hear the hit potential in "Love So Soft" everyone else seemed to; I found it to be one of her most forgettable lead singles from first listen. The video was fun though. The only other songs that really had hit potential were "Heat," "Meaning of Life," and maybe "Didn't I," but none of those were a sure thing. I still have a strong emotional attachment to "I Don't Think About You," but it was a poor single choice in hindsight. I used to stan "Medicine," but my love for it waned when it didn't translate well live. Meaning of Life is an enjoyable album, but it just didn't have hits on it.

Also I think maybe "Don't You Pretend" is my new favorite off the album. The lyrics are phenomenal and it all comes together so well.

Piece by Piece is by far the superior album. The title track is literally the best thing she's done since "Stronger".

I think if Kelly cowrote more of PBP it would have been better (don't @ me with that IHAD) because "Piece By Piece," "Tightrope," and "In the Blue" are among her best songs ever. But as a whole album, it's cohesive and was very of the moment, but also too watered down and glossed over to be particularly interesting. I still the "Heartbeat Song" is cute but at that stage in her career it was inarguably beneath her.

Yay for the these-should-have-been-the-singles in hindsight discussion! My turn to respond and rant. ;)
I 100% understand why they went with Love So Soft as the first single. At the same time, I found both “Heat” and “Medicine” more immediate and I *think* they each had a better chance for radio success. LSS is probably the song I like the most from the album now, but it was relatively low on my personal ranking at first. A grower for me.
It’s a shame that Medicine didn’t translate all that well live. If it had, I would be confidently arguing that Medicine was the lead single smash that got away. I still think Heat could have outperformed LSS as the first single, but I’m not convinced it would have been the hit I personally believed it could/should have been.
I’m also not convinced that Whole Lotta Woman would have been a better first single. It’s one of the most polarizing songs on the album, and it doesn’t have an undeniably great hook. Could it have been the risk that really paid off? For sure. Could any other randomly selected song from the album have also done better than LSS? Maybe (well, at least half of them).
Would You Call That Love had some potential to do something as the second single, but it’s definitely less representative of the album as a whole, and I understand the reasoning behind selecting IDTAY, another risk that I thought might have paid off, but sadly didn’t.
I also think Move You had more potential than its given credit for, even with those sappy lyrics. I LOVE that song’s melody, structure, and build up, with an explosive orgasm of a bridge that then turns into a tender post-coital final verse. I think the song shows off Kelly’s unique strengths as a storyteller with a powerful voice more than anything else she’s ever recorded, including IDTAY. If only the lyrics were better in some way, I think it could have been one of her best songs to date and a very successful single.
