KKBA Corpus ChristiFor the most part, yes, but "Glamorous"? At #9? WHLG Ft. PierceAgain, for the most part, yes, but Gym Class Heroes at #32? WGER Saginaw"Fegalicious" (#18) and "Sexyback" (21)? I've heard WGER before and I could classify them as borderline hot AC. Perhaps, those stations haven't moved far away from AC to keep their classification.

Corpus Christi...except for a few artists this looks like an urban AC station.

Also, KVLY in McAllen, Texas, and WMTX in Tampa, Florida are 2 others that straddle the line between regular AC & Hot AC. I really don't know what the boundary is to be classified as a Hot AC vs. a regular AC. Anybody know? ???

WGER used to be a soft AC. Then came the beginning of 2006, which saw the firing of Jerry O'Donnell from WGER. (He was either program director or music director, I forget which.)
The DJ team from 100.5 WTBT-FM was brought over to WGER - they're still there - and 100.5 was turned into a Talk station. I'm not sure that WGER fits under just one format now - they seem to dabble in Pop, Hot AC, and AC...though whenever I hear songs like SexyBack or Fergalicious on there, I wish that they'd just go Pop, because hearing those on there makes it seem like they're dying to go Pop. They do still have Delilah though.
But yeah, calling WGER an AC station is actually quite a misnomer, if you ask me.

ASome AC stations tend to add songs that are deemed "familiar" as well as AC standards. I heard Real McCoy on an AC station today and I wouldn't consider that format.

Update on a couple of the aforementioned stations:
On KKBA, "Glamorous" is now up to #7 on their playlist with 22 spins. On WHLG, "Glamorous" appears at #18, while Gym Class Heroes moves up to #24. "Too Little Too Late" by Jojo is also there, but I can let that one slide.

Very true about the familiar songs from years ago being more AC-friendly - even if they weren't AC-friendly when they were new. An AC station here in Phoenix played "Livin' On a Prayer" by Bon Jovi one night. Oh, and "I Feel for You" by Chaka Khan was played during their lunchtime request hour.

It seems to me that those songs would fall under R+B.

It seems to me that those songs would fall under R+B. Save Rod Stewart, Michael Buble and Kenny Loggins, KKBA's playlist looks more like a rhythmic AC station. There are a lot of urban- and rhythmic-sounding songs on their playlist.

That's an interesting article, and it just makes me more sad that there isn't any listenable current format any more. Even AC has gone to the dark side. Maybe smooth jazz, but I can't take too much of that at once, it just gets too sleepy.

I'm going to take a stab at this. Is the problem that station playlists are too tight AND too diverse within that tightness? It seems like everyone wants to be a Top 40 station these days and try to grab the best artists from all the other formats in addition to their core artists.

It seems like everyone wants to be a Top 40 station these days and try to grab the best artists from all the other formats in addition to their core artists. Well if Mainstream AC is trying to become the next "Top 40" format, then those stations would be better off expanding their playlists. When two-thirds of the songs within the top 20 of the mainstream AC chart are 6 months old or older, it's hard for them to become more diverse when they are playing the same songs month after month after month.

What has happened and what will continue to happen to AC is that the kind of music they can play will shift over time. Shocker talked about the AC station in Phoenix that played "Livin' On A Prayer". Even though it was #1 for three or four weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 21 years ago, AC wouldn't have touched it with a ten-foot pole. 21 years, AC radio stations were playing 60s music as part of their gold rotations. Very few ACs play 60s music now. Within the next five to ten years, I predict that the amount of 70s music you'll hear will decrease dramatically, if not gone completely, from AC stations, as the upper portion of the demo (35-54) "age out" of the format. That music will be replace by the likes of Bon Jovi, the Go-Go's and B-52s--again, artists that AC wouldn't have ever touched back when they were at their hottest.
