This may be a ridiculous thought, but is there a chance Closer could return to #1 this week? Mercy and 24K don't have a strong enough lead to take over. Starboy and Black Beatles keep slipping on iTunes. Closer seems steady in airplay and sales.

This may be a ridiculous thought, but is there a chance Closer could return to #1 this week? Mercy and 24K don't have a strong enough lead to take over. Starboy and Black Beatles keep slipping on iTunes. Closer seems steady in airplay and sales. It's more likely Black Beatles returns due to streaming. Currently: Black Beatles #5 Spotify #6 iTunes #8 Airplay #2 YouTube Closer #4 Spotify #5 iTunes #2 Airplay #8 YouTube Closer will have an advantage this week with it being the year end recap season, its airplay will increase with sales and streaming likely to follow suit. However, Black Beatles should benefit a bit from it as well since its already been big enough to make these lists, especially in the urban circuit. This means that on demand streaming and digital sales for both will be neck and neck. Closer will have the airplay advantage. Black Beatles, however, isn't too far behind in airplay and its YouTube streams are a lot higher than Closer. It'll be close, but I really think as the week goes on, Black Beatles will take the lead in streaming and sales and take the #1 spot. There's also 24K Magic to look at, but its streaming is too low to really compete. But, of course, we shouldn't count out Starboy! It's higher than all of them on Spotify, ahead of Closer and 24K on YouTube, ahead of Black Beatles and 24K in airplay and will also benefit from year-end countdowns. It only lacks in sales where it's the lowest of the four, though in this sales climate it's still selling 61% of the #1 on iTunes even though it's only #12. It's going to be an entertaining week!

Honestly I'd love 13 week song. While there is a pretty damn slim chance of closer reaching number one again. But if everything stays the same for closer on 1/21 then I could see it being possible.
I think the week will look something like 1. Black Beatles 2. Closer 3. Starboy 4. 24k And somewhere in the top 7 is bad and Boujee and somewhere in the top 15 is Mercy.

"BB" will be ahead for the week in downloads, though, no? It had that big boost right after Christmas.

Black Beatles is projected to sell less than 150k (unless kworb is wrong since it's a tough week to predict) which is the lowest #1 song in this week since the digiral era started with Laffy Taffy selling 175k in late 2005. Sales will drop even further going into 2017 but higher streaming numbers will more than balance the difference.

"BB" will be ahead for the week in downloads, though, no? It had that big boost right after Christmas. Depends on how big that boost was compared to the rest of the week and how hard it falls/Closer gains in the coming days. It could have gotten 15k from Christmas, but if Closer gets 25k to Black Beatles' 15k in the remaining week, that's still roughly 30k to 30k. Of course, these aren't the real numbers, but you get what I mean. This is definitely one the most exciting weeks for the #1 spot in a while! Even if all the songs in the running are old and have already been at the summit, save 24K. Enjoy it while it lasts, though. Next week will likely be interesting again, but two weeks from now, we all know Bad and Boujee will take it and hold it for a while.

If kowrb is fairly accurate, "BB" will be ahead of "Closer" by 30-40k in downloads for the week.

I love the fact that the fight for number one isn't which is the most popular but which is dying the slowest.

This is a very unpredictable week. I haven't been checking the kworb ratios, but things seem to be especially crazy with iTunes, with an endless musical chairs scenario of songs topping the chart there, from BB to 24K to This Town to Mercy, etc. - it seems that with most post-Christmas weeks there is a clear #1 that stays at the top.
Also, I haven't been checking the numbers on this either, but how will streaming be affected by the post-Christmas week? I guess it's hard to gauge because the streaming era is still fairly new, but I would think it would go at least slightly up because of people getting new phones and streaming devices and using gift money to buy subscriptions, etc., but I don't really know.

Hopefully, kworb will update their weekly iTunes digital sales estimate so we can get a better grasp of what went on during the week, which was very definitely very variable. Also, their weekly Spotify and YouTube charts. The latter is probably is the least useful given that it only gives the total views rather than those from the U.S. and doesn't take into account the meme phenomenon.
EDIT: I just found a Headlineplanet article with the Spotify top 10 weekly number:
1. Fake Love 8.611 MM (1) 2. Bad And Boujee 7.919 MM (4) 3. Starboy 7.230 MM (2) 4. Black Beatles 6.199 MM (3) 5. Closer 5.807 MM (5) 6. Caroline 4.858 MM (8) 7. Bad Things 4.695 (9) 8. I Don’t Wanna Live Forever 4.502 MM (7) 9. Deja Vu 4.353 MM (6) 10. Broccoli 4.317 MM (14)

Streaming traditionally goes down this time of year, which makes sense. People are out celebrating the holidays and don't have a lot of time to stream music. It's not a huge nosedive, but it is a noticeable decrease. On Spotify, Bad and Boujee just took #1, but with 1.2 million streams, which is the lowest in quite a while.

To throw more interesting stuff into the battle for #1 this week and next: 24K Magic just took #1 back on iTunes with dark green updates.

As a heads up, kworb just updated its weekly sales estimates for the tracking week that just ended. We could be looking at as many as 8 songs selling 100k or more.

As a heads up, kworb just updated its weekly sales estimates for the tracking week that just ended. We could be looking at as many as 8 songs selling 100k or more. I remember when it was 8 songs selling 300k or more

it's so sad just how quick digital sales plummeted. When people finally realized that you could get every song for the price of 10 songs, that was the end of it.

I remember when it was 8 songs selling 300k or more Ah good old Early 2015 Taking a lot back at the corresponding tracking week that ended 12/28/2014, according to kworb, there could have been as many 21 songs selling more than 100k and 4 selling more than 300k. One year before that on the week that end 12/29/2013, 5 sold more than 300k and 34 more than 100k. If Black Beatles does top Digital Songs Sales with 129k that'll be less than the 175k that Laffy Taffy got in 2005 in the corresponding week.

When people finally realized that you could get every song for the price of 10 songs, that was the end of it. Yeah, don't know why it took people almost 15 years to realize that though. ??? Spotify was launched 8 years ago and only came to the US 5 years ago. And it wasn't until fairly recently when they got a good database of music. Yes, YouTube has been around for longer, but the quality isn't the same, there wasn't nearly the widespread availability of Wi-Fi/cellular data/Internet availability/Internet speed that there is now, and nothing until Spotify really had all of the personalization owning your own music does. Even with digital sales, it took time to become a popular medium. The iTunes Store started in 2003, but digital sales really never became the popular way to consume music until 06/07. It takes time for people to realize something else is out there. They're not industry watchers like you and I. Change just takes time.

Sometimes I just hope that the resurgence in vinyl will miraculously bring about a come back of physical single sales having a force on the charts.
I can dream can't I?
