Just stumbled on this 'Personal Reviews' area for the first time and saw that Red is reviewing every Alt Rock song to reach #1, and he based that on ry4n doing every Hot 100 #1 song ever.
It looks like a lot of fun, so I'm gonna join the party and do every #1 in the history of Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs chart.
5 star system
1 awful 2 bad 3 tolerable 4 good 5 great
Here we go!.......

March 21, 1981 Eric Clapton "I Can't Stand It"
George Carlin once said, "White people got no business playing the blues ever, at all, under any circumstances. Ever, ever, ever."
Thank you, Mr Clapton, for showing us why.
"I'll explain. I feel like I'm being used. Make it plain. So you don't get confused. You're fooling around. I can't stand it."
These are lyrics you crumple up and toss in the trash moments after writing them down.
This is an aptly titled song, because my reaction to hearing it matches its name.
2 stars.

April 4, 1981 The Who "You Better You Bet"From Songfacts.com: Pete Townshend wrote this "over several weeks of clubbing and partying" while the still-married guitarist was dating a younger woman. The lyrics aren't afraid to confess that his little tart was quite a go-er, if you know what I mean *nudge-nudge*wink-wink*. "You welcome me with open arms and open legs. I know only fools have needs but this one never begs."Sure, it's corny. And fluffy. But eh, good enough. 4 stars.

I come because you summoned me (and were inspired by my thread, which, really, I'm touched), and I stay because of the Carlin quotes.
Well, that, and the music that is to come. You have a reader!

May 9, 1981 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers "The Waiting"
I file Tom Petty alongside Ric Ocasek and Billy Corgan in the 'How did we ever all agree that these people can sing?' folder. But hey, it is what it is. I've learned to look past his nasally, Dylan-esque southern drawl and just enjoy his songs anyway.
The waiting is the hardest part. Every day you see one more card.
This lil ditty about a girl not giving up the goods too soon is worth a spin once in a while, I reckon.

June 20, 1981 Joe Walsh "A Life Of Illusion"Channeling a recently deceased John Lennon here. Pretty tame for Walsh (solo anyway). I prefer his weirder tracks like "Space Age Whiz Kids" and "Ordinary Average Guy". But hey, decent rock radio filler. And a mighty fine movie opener too. 4 stars.

June 27, 1981 Moody Blues "The Voice"
Has this ever happened to you?
You see a song title and say, "I don't know that song."
But when you hear it you say, "Oh, I do know that song."
Then when it's done you say, "But I haven't really missed it."
Well, me too.

July 25, 1981 Foreigner "Urgent"
This song's message is pretty clear.
We ain't in love, but when we get horny, get the hell out of our way.
I suppose I could crank this one up a few times a year.
My rating for this song matches the name of its album.
4 stars.

August 22, 1981 Blue Oyster Cult "Burnin' For You"
Was BÖC the first band tö put that evil-lööking umlaut över öne öf their letters?
Anyway, what could be more romantic than telling a girl she's the reason you're going to burn in a lake of fire for eternity?
I'm living for giving the devil his due. And I'm burnin', I'm burnin', I'm burnin' for you.
Rock on, condemned sinner.

September 5, 1981 Rolling Stones "Start Me Up"
Beating Frankie Goes To Hollywood by several years, I believe Mick and the boys got the word 'come' (in its dirty context) on the radio first.
Though it's not as momentous as the f-bombs in "Who Are You" a few years earlier, or Eddie Money's "her tits were shakin'" the following year, it still earns a badge.
Nonetheless, despite being a radio milestone, "You make a dead man come" just ain't good lyricism.
Good enough to justify 13 weeks at #1? Not really. But it's still one of the Stones' best.
5 stars.

December 5, 1981 Foreigner "Waiting For A Girl Like You"The only good thing to come from this song was it allowed keyboardist Thomas Dolby to finance his first album. 2 stars.

Hey, the first couple of stone cold classics! "Burnin' For You" still rules, as most BOC still rules nowadays. "Start Me Up" isn't among my favorite Stones songs, but it definitely has its place in music history. Not sure if Doc would be a big fan of you disliking a Foreigner song, but I'm a fan of the review all the same.

December 12, 1981 Police "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic"
The Popo go calypso.
I can understand why Andy and Stewart bucked this bouncy little pop song so ardently at first.
But ultimately, the final product turned out to be a great song.
The fear of approaching a girl you've got the hots for? I could totally relate back then.
5 stars.

January 16, 1982 J Geils Band "Centerfold"
One day the company owner busts into my office. "Look up everything about this girl: Amanda Love. I went to school with her and now she's gonna be in a dirty magazine."
Sure enough...
Xtreme: Can you talk a little bit about your appearance on the Howard Stern show, and your upcoming layout in the Magazine "Leg Show"?
Amanda: It was very interesting, and a learning experience. I got to meet Snoop Doggy Dog. Him and his friends kept lighting up joint after joint in the green room. They were getting so high! I will be appearing as the Centerfold in the September 2000 issue of Leg Show.
And all I could think was, "There's his homeroom angel on the pages in between..."
One of the catchiest pop-rock songs ever made.
5 stars.

February 6, 1982 Joan Jett & the Blackhearts "I Love Rock 'N' Roll"
Like Olivia Newton-John's "Physical", this song was originally written to be sung by a guy. But it works a lot better coming from a female.
Attitude.. Simplicity.. Anthemic chorus.. Verses that stroke that male ego.. What's not to love about I Love Rock 'N' Roll?
5 stars.

March 13, 1982 Van Halen "Oh Pretty Woman"My first exposure to Van Halen was Diver Down at 11 years old. I wasn't impressed. I still think it's one of their worst albums. But after getting hooked on their previous album Fair Warning at 13, then loving 1984, I became a huge Van Halen fanboy (until OU812). Despite coming from one of their worst albums, this song is a classic. And dat crazy banned video! 5 stars.

March 27, 1982 Prism "Don't Let Him Know"
Who??
'they won the Canadian music industry Juno Award for Group of the Year in 1981'
Who??
'noteworthy for launching the careers of several former group members, including international record producer Bruce Fairbairn, songwriter Jim Vallance, Powder Blues Band frontman Tom Lavin, and Chilliwack musician Ab Bryant'
Who??
'five Hot 100 hits between the years 1977-1981'
Uh, ok..
'a pre-fame Bryan Adams also contributed as a songwriter to several early Prism releases including their biggest US hit Don't Let Him Know.'
Well, it's still lame.

April 3, 1982 Tommy Tutone "867-5309/Jenny"
Why did someone in Kentucky get 50,000 calls looking for Jenny in one week?
Why did the daughter of Buffalo NY's police chief get inundated with calls looking for Jenny?
Why did two freshmen get 5 crank calls a day at Brown University back in 1999 - 17 years after this song charted?
Why was someone able to get bidding up to $80,000 on eBay for his phone number (212-867-5309) in 2004?
Because this is a classic jam that still holds up well today.
5 stars.

April 24, 1982 Asia "Heat Of The Moment"What do you get when you put 4 prog rockers into one band? Answer: a song that's not prog at all! But a good song nonetheless. Love its jammin' guitar intro with the explosive drums. To put it in Beavis & Butthead terms, "DAHH NAHH NAHH NAHH NA-NAHH!" An interesting bit o' trivia: This is our second #1 so far that appears in The 40 Year Old VirginAsia's songs always feel rushed to me, like the record player is spinning a bit more than 45 RPM and needs to be calibrated. But it's still a good song, despite being so damn apologetic and wussy. It's not exactly the "macho rock stuff," is it?4 stars.

May 29, 1982 Scorpions "No One Like You"My first introduction to Scorpions was a birthday gift from a friend, their 1976 album Virgin Killer. Fortunately he bought me the safe artworkand not the creepy-will-get-you-arrested artwork. Though had this particular guy been given the choice, I'd be willing to bet he'd have bought the creepy one. Anyway, I didn't like the album at all. But either they improved or I grew a sense of taste because this song rocks. And so do another dozen or so of their songs that I'm expecting to not going to encounter as I move forward because this is their only rock #1. Bonus points for scoring a #1 with someone on the mic who was allegedly singing foe net tick lee the whole time. 4 stars.

My favorite Scorpions songs are "Dynamite" and "No One Like You"...fittingly, from the same album, which is also my favorite of theirs. Go figure.

June 5, 1982 Rainbow "Stone Cold"Never heard this song before today. I thought the organist was gonna play Phantom Of The Opera at the beginning. The only song from Rainbow I like will only reach #2 in 1983, so I'll mention it here now (and I'll comment that I used to like the video too): "Street Of Dreams"But this song? Bleh. 2 stars.

June 19, 1982 John Cougar "Hurts So Good"
Johnny Cougar (Mellencamp) wrote this based on something his friend said after getting an acupunture treatment from his grandmother.
Supposedly he asked something like, "How'd it go?" to which she replied, "It hurt so good."
He turned that into a song that's basically asking for a good boinking.
Nothin' wrong with making sure you're deliverin' the goods by giving it a little harder than pleasantly, right? Bow-chicka. Wow-wow! ;)

June 26, 1982 38 Special "Caught Up in You"Their first song to make the top ten on the Hot 100. They'll only have one more song do this, but it will be hard to call that one a 'rock' song, since it will hit #1 on the AC chartbetween a Cher/Peter Cetera sleeper and a Natalie Cole sleeper. "Caught Up In You" rehashes that tired ol' theme of "I'm back for good this time, really for real, no more foolin' 'round cuz those other girls aren't as good as you (aka they all dumped me and won't put up with my crapola)." But it's catchy enough to enjoy once in a while on a southern rock playlist or SXM's Classic Rewind. 4 stars.

August 7, 1982 Eddie Money "Think I'm in Love"It was the summer of 1990. My first serious girlfriend and I had spent the night talking. We talked so long the sun came up. The conversation ended with us telling each other "I love you." It was the first time I'd said it to a girl. I got into my car and started it up. And there was Eddie, blasting out of my radio... I think I'm in love And my life's lookin' upIt was a moment of my life that could easily work as a scene in a John Hughes movie. 5 stars.
