Also, "Freak on a Leash" wasn't nearly as big of a hit as I thought it was. It only peaked at #6 on Alternative and #10 on Active, and didn't chart on the Hot 100 at all. Maybe my perception of it's popularity was skewed because VH1 listed it in their 90s countdown. What's funny, to me, is what actually IS their biggest Hot 100 hit: "Did My Time". Went top 40 on the strength of physical sales. Go figure. Okay, no real suspense involved with this next song... Korn was the atomic bomb that my music fandom needed to blossom into the behemoth that it has since become. Are Korn my favorite band still? No, but they were instrumental in me discovering many other bands and artists. For the second favorite artist, though, I only needed to look over to the bedroom beside mine and my brother's favorite band. He had been playing this band for years before my music fandom changed, but I couldn't seem to get into them myself. Discovering that rock music was the genre of choice changed that. Instead of just ignoring it like I used to, suddenly, I was enraptured by the sounds being played. The funny thing, though, is that my first favorite song of theirs was the one that I discovered on my own.
Admire me, admire my home Admire my son, he's my clone This land is mine, this land is free I'll do what I want but irresponsibly

Hint #9 coming up!
This song, first released in 2000, does not have the same music video director as the previous two songs, but it does have a distinction that those other songs weren't able to obtain: The original version of the song (sorry, "Freak on a Leash" with Amy Lee) was on the Hot 100. Not only that, but it was a massive hit, one of the biggest hits of 2002.

Yep. Sigh, talking about Linkin Park hasn't gotten any easier... When the lead singer of this band died not too long ago, I made a statement about the passing and how it affected me. And it affected me. Hard. How could it not? After all, he was an important part of my maturation as a fan of music. Without him, I can't say that I wouldn't still veer down the path of rock music, but how he impacted me means more than just musically. He was my voice when I didn't have a voice, a shining light in a seemingly vast darkness. I never met the man, and it makes me feel all the shame in the world that I didn't have the chance to tell him how much he meant to me. My first favorite band was Korn. My second favorite band was Pearl Jam. My third favorite band...was Linkin Park.
I kept everything inside And even though I tried, it all fell apart What it meant to me Will eventually be a memory of a time when I tried so hard
SONG #9 Linkin Park - In the End

To the next hint, we go. Thankfully, the swerve into another direction isn't AS wild as these first couple have been...
This next song is the opening track off of their landmark 1993 release, an album that turned the band into superstars and helped to change the face of alternative rock forever.

I like when you're around and posting. You help get this rankdown moving forward. Chapter Four Family Matters You may remember me mentioning how my brother played a big role in my music fandom by being the one to introduce me to Pearl Jam. He played a role, to be sure, but my oldest sister perhaps played an even bigger role by introducing me to so many styles and sounds that I'm still trying to catch up with today. To mention all of the bands and artists she listened to that caught my ears...it would take about a month to come up with them all. The easiest ones to focus on, then, are the ones I remember her playing the most. More than any other band or artist, THIS is the band I remember her loving more than any other.
Freak out and give in Doesn't matter what you believe in Stay cool And be somebody's fool this year

On to the next one.
The next song, also from a 1993 release, comes from an even bigger band than the band from the previous song. They caused a seismic shift in the music landscape a few years prior. This song is more famous nowadays for a live acoustic version performed months before the lead singer's death.

Cherub Rock is probably my favorite Pumpkins song - one of my favorite build-ups ever + those shoegaze guitars also, All Apologies Pretty much ditto on everything. Including the next song. It wasn't just the Pumpkins that my sister adored. There were so many other artists. The Cure. Marilyn Manson. Nine Inch Nails. So, SO many other artists, including a couple more that will pop up later. I vividly remember a band bigger than the Pumpkins that she also loved, a band that share a distinction with the band that my brother loved so much. We're not done with grunge, not by a long shot, and the kings of grunge played a role in the Red household, too...
I'll take all the blame Aqua sea foam shame Sunburn with freeze burn Choking on the ashes of her enemy

Onto hint #12!
Another seminal release from around the same period as the previous two bands, this 1994 track is widely considered to be this band's signature song and one of the most popular rock songs of the period.

Ooh, this is the first hint that actually seems to have stumped you guys. How about another hint?
This song's video won the VMA for Best Metal/Hard Rock Performance in 1994, and it won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance the following year.

Bingo. So, my sister loved Nirvana and my brother loved Pearl Jam. Where do the other big acts of grunge fit in? Well, the band that I gravitated to on my own was Alice in Chains. Layne Staley remains one of my favorite ever vocalists, and the news of his death floored me more than any celebrity death ever has. Stone Temple Pilots...I suppose all three of us had a particular period of time where we liked STP somewhat, but it seemed like I liked them the most out of all of us, too. All three of us liked the next band, though. A lot. More than the previous two bands mentioned.
In my shoes, a walking sleep And my youth I pray to keep Heaven sent hell away No one sings like you anymore

Next hint!
Shifting gears a little bit (but only a little bit), we move to a 1997 release that recently celebrated the anniversary with a 20th anniversary re-release. The actual song from said release that is being used for this rankdown was written with a Baz Luhrmann film in mind, based on a very, VERY famous play. It has since taken a life of its own, especially recently, with its recent use in popular television series.

Indeed! A lot of grunge was played in my house, but, as I mentioned before, my sister certainly played quite a few other artists...and, frankly, quite a few more bands and artists than my brother. It seemed like she was as curious about finding new music as I was and still am. Perhaps the most fascinating discovery was a band that I could not figure out the name of for years, a band that I remember her playing one song in particular, ad nauseam. I didn't think that I would enjoy it as much as I did when I got older. As it turns out, I was wrong. And of course I was. How could I possibly dislike Radiohead?
You can laugh A spineless laugh We hope your Rules and wisdom choke you

Hint time! And we're about to swerve...into the 2000's! Ahh, spooky.
This next song, first released in 2002, was the song that broke this band out and remains one of their most popular songs. It also has a special distinction related to a certain someone in this thread. *hint hint*

Yeah, pretty much gave that one away. Chapter Five Furthering the Evolution
Eventually, I struck out on my own, discovering music and seemingly finding new music to love every day. Some discoveries were bigger than others (see: System of a Down, Nine Inch Nails), but I have fond memories of so many of the artists that I discovered during that period. While the next band doesn't quite have the same pull that some of my favorite artists have, they do have the distinction of being the band that helped to inspire my username, and, eventually, my nickname. For that, they will forever be in my debt.
So lay down The threat is real When his sight Goes red again

Another hint!
The next song is the opening track off of this band's 2009 release, said to be among the band's best albums, if not THE best. The song itself is a huge fan favorite of the band in question, and the music video for the song was heavily inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey. They just released another strong album earlier this year.

also, is the other song that inspired your username going to be in this rankdown? There's always a chance... All did not go well. But let's see if it does now. The next two songs are practically intertwined, at this point, because I discovered them at around the same time, and they both helped to expand my music taste in a seismic way. They also perform two completely different styles of music. The first hooked me with ferocious drumming, massive riffs, and surprisingly catchy hooks. Also, drugs. Drugs were definitely involved in the making of this band's music. No band could make an album as batshit crazy as Crack the Skye without being on some sort of drug. And I couldn't imagine them any other way.
Close, low bright eyes fading Faster than stars falling How can I tell you I failed? Tell you I failed

Finally, FINALLY, everything worked long enough for me to reveal the next song. And with that, here's the next hint!
This 2004 release, off of their debut album (which was nominated for the Shortlist Music Prize), was critically acclaimed, and was even featured in the top 50 of Pitchfork's Top 500 Songs of the 2000's. Two years later, they would release an album that would become one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the decade.
