Neighborhood #3 - Arcade fire? Probably should have mentioned that this band is also not featured on Daryl's Indie rankdown, so that would rule out Arcade Fire. That does not, however, rule out indie artists in general. Hint hint.

Close. Should have probably mentioned that the album this song is featured on won the 2004 Shortlist Music Prize. It wasn't just nominated.

Oh, it's Staring at the Sun There we go. I discovered both Mastodon and the next artist in 2006. Two vastly different songs hooked me. The Mastodon song was "The Wolf Is Loose", complete with its INSANE drumming and furious vocals. That song remains a personal favorite of mine, but I chose "Oblivion" because it's the song that means the most to me as a fan of Mastodon's. The song of the artist being featured here was much more brooding, underlying. As it turns out, that kind of brooding, under the surface mastery was something that I was looking for without knowing that I wanted it. And, with TV on the Radio, it got even better than "Wolf Like Me", once I delved deeper into their discography...
Cross the street from your storefront cemetery Hear me hailing from inside and realize I am the conscience clear in pain or ecstasy And we're all weaned my dear upon the same fatigue
SONG #16 TV on the Radio - Staring at the Sun

Next hint, here we go.
The band for the next song might, honestly, be the least known of the 40 artists chosen for this rankdown. If they are known for ANY song, though, it's this 2005 song, their only song with a million views on YouTube. A certain Green person might be familiar with this choice (and, thus, save us a day or more of further hints), as he used this song for a Rock Tournament.

Thank you for ensuring this hint would not take hours to figure out. I can't tell you when I first listened to this next song. I really can't. I know that a friend that I haven't kept in touch with over the years recommended me the band, but I don't specifically him recommending me this song. Whether he recommended it specifically, or I discovered it on my own, I do know for a fact that it amazed me when I first listened to it. Doing research on the band, I discovered that this band had some really incredible music to be listened to. While I did greatly enjoy a lot of their early work, the first song that I fell in love with remains the one I'm most enamored with. And if you've never heard of Dredg before, well, have I got a discovery for you...
Gonna need a home You'd expect the same now wouldn't you Wouldn't you
SONG #17 Dredg - Bug Eyes

I feel like, in lieu of the next hint, I should just let Green announce what it is, because he will have to know what song is coming. I mean, if #14 is a part of this, then #18 has to be too, right? But here's a hint, anyway.
This 2005 single from an acclaimed post-hardcore band...is it one of the band's most popular songs? I'm not sure, honestly. But it's definitely the song I've associated with the band. Think of the #14 hint, then think about what song this could be.

also, is the other song that inspired your username going to be in this rankdown? No, I wouldn't call it one of their most popular songs - it didn't even chart - but it's probably a fan favorite. "Red Sky" by Thrice.

Yep, you know what's coming. Okay, remember how I said that "The Red" was responsible for the username/nickname you're familiar with (or, at the very least, aware of)? Well, that only tells part of the story. Another song came along four years later, a song that immediately won me over. It also featured "Red" in the title of the song. At one point, I fell in love with the song to the point where I started using its title all over the internet. I still use it today as part of my Xbox gamertag. THAT is how much that song meant to me and still means to me today. At this point, this song is part of my identity.
I know what lies beneath, I've seen the flash of teeth Conspiring with the reef to sink our ship The wind's a cheating wife, her tongue a thirsty knife And she could take your life with one good kiss Can you see the sky turn red
SONG #18 Thrice - Red Sky

Ready for another hard turn? It's hint time...and it's swerve time again!
We go back to the past with this next track...all the way back to 1971, in fact, for the title track of the third album by a music legend. This song has a famous cover that was performed by another artist already featured in this rankdown.

The Man Who Sold the World Was about to mention that he's involved in something over on the Alt/Active forum, too. Chapter Six Old Friends Become New Friends
And now, for something completely different, let's go back in time once again. Around the time that I fell in love with TV on the Radio and Mastodon, I also began my ever-growing love affair with classic rock. This artist wasn't the first that I dug deeper for, but he was definitely among those first couple of older acts that I took an interest in. I mean, I could have chosen so many artists for this particular part, but I decided on these three because...well...it's my rankdown. And besides, who doesn't want to hear some Bowie?
I laughed and shook his hand And made my way back home I searched for form and land For years and years I roamed

Hint #20!
First released in 1978, this track stands out as one of this legendary Canadian band's most famous tracks before their biggest album was released a few years later. The song was even featured in a rhythm music game in 2008. It's also one of two songs on its respective album under five minutes long.

The Spirit of Radio The Trees You have NO idea how close I came to using "Spirit" instead... No matter the other two choices for this particular category, there was going to be one guaranteed artist, because they are the band I most associate with this period of discovery. Through all of my digging, through all of the older songs I was listening to for the first time, one band just wowed me in ways that seemingly none of the other acts were capable of. These guys are just impeccable musicians, masters of their craft. Best of all, they were from CANADA! Thank you, friends north of the American border. Thank you for giving us Rush.
There is trouble in the forest And the creatures all have fled As the maples scream 'oppression!' And the oaks, just shake their heads

I knew it was Rush based on the hint, I just had to find out which song it was. I thought The Spirit of Radio would be the most famous one but it wasn't in a Rock Band game

Hint #21!
This 1980 release was off of the first album release by this band after the original singer was fired from the band. His replacement, like the man he replaced, is one of the most famous singers in his respective genre. The song is also noteworthy for being the band name of a spinoff band featuring three of the four band members in this song.

Heaven and Hell I got inspired by Volbeat and typed Heaven OR Hell at first I've been there before. After deciding on both of the first two artists for this category (Rush was an instant choice, Bowie took some more time), I was stuck on a third option. I had plenty of options, but I just couldn't make up my mind. I immediately thought of Motorhead, but their impact on my music taste was different than Bowie and Rush, so I decided to push them to the side...for this rankdown, anyway. I deliberated on this choice for far too long, and I'm still not 100% sure if I made the right choice in terms of meaning and impact on me personally (though this band would prove to be another one of the first couple of artists I really sunk my teeth into). As far as the song itself goes, though, there is no doubt: This song kicks all the asses.
Sing me a song, you're a singer Do me a wrong, you're a bringer of evil The devil is never a maker The less that you give, you're a taker

Hint #22! And it's time for a HARD swerve...
Veering hard into another direction, we're encountering previously uncharted territory with this 1999 song. It was actually not released as a single, but it remains one of the best songs from this rapper's (see, wasn't kidding about the hard swerve) major label debut. It also shares the same name as the signature move of one of the most famous wrestlers of all time.

Yeah, I was not expecting that. Rock Bottom. Sorry about the whiplash. Chapter Seven Detour to Detroit...and Other Cities of Interest
Let's go forward in time...but further back in my music fandom. Back to the Korn days. I know, that technically means I should have placed this after "The Evolution", but let's just run with it, shall we? In a way, this decision is less about staying chronologically consistent and more about creating a pattern with the changing genres and music types. Yeah...that's how I'll justify it. Around the time that I fell in love with Korn, a certain MC from Detroit broke onto the scene, introducing himself to the world. It was thanks to this blonde white boy that I really began to appreciate rap and hip hop. I can't deny it, I was a member of the Slim Shady Fan Club, and, to this day, this is the song that I always come back to when I need to remember just how gifted Marshall Mathers is as a rapper.
But they threw me in the mix with all these gloomy lunatics Who walk around depressed and smoke a pound of cess a day And yesterday went by so quick it seems like it was just today My daughter wants to throw the ball but I'm too stressed to play Live half a life and throw the rest away

Okay, I'm not going to lie to you guys here...this next one is easy to guess. Too easy. I mean, just take a look at this hint: Hey, remember the artist featured in the #22 song? He's back, and in pog form--er, feature form! He's the feature on this song, also released in 1999, and you may have heard of this one before...Yeah. I'm just going to reveal the song. Only time I'm doing this, but seriously...come on. Let's stay with Eminem for another entry, shall we? Eminem was discovered by one of the biggest names in all of rap. At the end of 1999, that big name released one of the most anticipated albums of that decade, an album that...MOSTLY lived up to the hype, but it especially lived up to said hype with the greatest collaboration between master and protege. I can rap the hook on a moment's notice. And really, how could I not? Its catchiness is undeniable.
Nowadays everybody wanna talk like they got something to say But nothing comes out when they move their lips Just a bunch of gibberish And motherfuckers act like they forgot about Dre
SONG #23 Dr. Dre ft. Eminem - Forgot About Dre

Okay, seriously now, next hint!
Hey, this rap song doesn't feature an artist in the previous two songs. In fact, it's not even from the same time period! In fact, we have to move all the way forward to 2005 for the next release, an album track off of this rapper/producer's second studio album. It features another quite influential and popular rapper.
