In a tenth anniversary book issued in 1989, CMJ, the trade journal of college radio, include a chart of the top 250 singles, according to airplay, from the publication's first decade of existence, arguably the true heyday of college rock music. The tracking period is from March of 1979 to the end of 1988. Hence why you won't see smashes like "So Alive", "Fascination Street", and "The Mayor Of Simpleton" in this list. However, if someone has the CMJ 500 book which lists the top songs from 1979-1996, we'd have a better shot of having a more accurate 1980's decade list.
