Thank you Grammys for exposing me to the masterpiece that is βThe Joke.β
I am still stunned listening to it over and over again.

I feel like, based on the overwhelmingly positive reaction her performance got, she was the true winner of the night. I will buying this on vinyl.

If iTunes is any indication, she seems to be the one who has benefitted the most. Am curious to see how the charts reflect it, if anything. I also feel like putting together a small but mighty list of songs for all you lovely newcomers to check out if youβre so interested! βΊοΈ maybe a project for tomorrow.

Ok, I'm still buzzing and on a continuous Brandi kick so I'm just going to do it now!
Here are my recommendations for those of you new to Brandi and some songs for you to check out.
Honestly, no story about Brandi is complete without The Story. While it wasn't her first single, it was her breakthrough - and it actually made the Hot 100. Her only song to do so thus far. It peaked at #75. I also learned the other day that it has been certified Gold. It also oddly hit #1 in Portugal. This was my introduction to Brandi and from this song, I bought the album (also called The Story) and immediately fell in love. The Story was covered by Leann Rimes a few years ago and released as a country single. Dolly Parton also recorded a cover of it for a covers album (which I'll get to below).
Turpentine is kind of a fan favourite, from what I gather, though admittedly it's not among my favourites. I just get a feeling I'll be scolded for not including it.
Again Today is a personal highlight from that same album. It follows a similar path to The Story in that it has a gentle intro before exploding after the second chorus to a big finish.
Wasted has some of my favourite lyrics by her. A line from this song I have tattooed on my arm as kind of a personal motto: "Every time you close a door and nothing opens in its place you've wasted." I also really love the next line that I think is advice everyone needs: "And when you speak the words you know to those who know the words themselves you've wasted." I actually prefer a version of this song from a demos album from 2003 - it's more raw sounding.
That Year is a softer song by Brandi but I imagine probably one of her most personal. I believe she wrote it about someone she knew who committed suicide and based on the lyrics, it seems she held onto the anger of that for a long time before finally letting go and forgiving them. This song almost never fails to give me shivers when I listen to it. One of my favourites!
For those who love the vocals, Brandi does a killer performance of Before It Breaks with the Seattle Symphony.
I think this is my favourite video by Brandi - starring Kris Kristofferson. It has a gospel feel to it. This was the first single from her Bear Creek album (2012) which is my favourite Brandi album and honestly the one I thought would get her noticed by the Grammys. The album itself is very rustic sounding and showcases all of Brandi's best qualities as an artist.
Another highlight from Bear Creek!
Brandi put this out as a preview to her 2015 album The Firewatcher's Daughter. It was the first single to put the Twins in the spotlight with her and emphasize that Brandi Carlile isn't a solo artist but a band. I believe the video was recorded live but the album version is similar in how minimalistic it is but the trio sing it all together.
Brandi's rockiest song. Serving up those vocals here too!
I've been jamming to this one a lot lately. This song reminds of the same epicness of classics like American Pie and Piano Man. That whole storytelling side of songwriting. Sugartooth is about a man with an addiction to opioids that ultimately takes his life. This song is another highlight in her songwriting. "He only took the pills when the doctor told him."
Some days, I feel like Party of One is Brandi's best recording. It's the last track on the latest album and is similar to a few she's done before in that the majority of the song is minimal until the end when the sound fills out and the song takes a complete turn. In this song, she's singing about a rocky relationship where you'd feel like giving up but in this, she directly references the fact that they're gay and that they literally fought to be together and that if that was worth it, they should be willing to keep at it. The recording of the song really pulls at that as Brandi's vocals strain when she sings "I don't want to be right anymore/Lord, I don't want to fight anymore/I'm not taking your side anymore." But the song transitions from this cold dark place when the strings come in and the tone of the piano changes. I always imagine a swift transition from a winter's night to suddenly the ice starting to melt. This song is an emotional rollercoaster.
Some Brandi fast-facts
- She's had three albums make the Billboard 200 Top 10 - her last three. Bear Creek (#10), The Firewatcher's Daughter (#9) and By The Way, I Forgive You (#5). I think the latter was the top album in sales that week.
- She first hit the AAA chart back in 2005 with Falls Apart Again and What Can I Say
- Elton John sings a verse on her song Caroline, from the 2009 album Give Up The Ghost.
- The Adele 21 bonus track Hiding My Heart was written by one of the twins (Tim) and appears as a hidden song on The Story (2007)
- Brandi's first Grammy nomination was in 2016 for Best Americana Album for The Firewatcher's Daughter. She lost to Jason Isbell.
- In 2017, Brandi organized a benefit covers album to mark 10 years since the release of The Story. The album consists of cover recordings of that record that includes Dolly Parton, Pearl Jam (Again Today), Indigo Girls and Adele! It also has a foreward written by President Obama!
- Late last year, she released a version of Party Of One with Sam Smith. Don't bother. He sucks the emotion right out of the song.
- I met her once! She signed my vinyl copy of The Firewatcher's Daughter.

She also randomly does a cover of The Neverending Story with Shooter Jennings but it doesn't seem to be on YouTube.
So instead, check out her cover of John Denver's Country Roads with Emmylou Harris
And finally, her kickass cover of Radiohead's Creep:
Enjoy! :)

She was robbed of AOTY. By The Way, I Forgive You is flawless and peerless.

I find the whole label stuff kind of confusing but her last album was on Low Country Sound / Elektra (according to Wikipedia). Does that mean Elektra was the distributor? Her 2015 album was on ATO and she was with Columbia before that since her debut. I'm assuming this new deal is a pretty big deal. I wonder if a new album is coming within the next year or so?
