Watermarking is a process meant to prevent the distribution of digital audio over the Internet in the MP3 format. Basically trying to keep it from getting leaked, right?

Not exactly but you have the concept right. When a CD is watermarked, you can still make copies and you can still rip it. However, all copies and rips will contain that watermark. If the record company sees their files on, for example, P2P networks, they can easily trace it back to the original owner of the CD.

So it's different from Copy Controlled files and stuff...and they contain some signal or something so the record people know which files are authorized and which aren't. Cool.
