Drake is coming for #1 this week. His streams are insane and his sales are great too. Airplay is small, but growing.
In two days, he already racked up close to 6 million streams from Spotify alone. Currently, the #2 song on iTunes is selling only 30% of him. He entered the top 50 on rhythmic and urban today.
This is all for God's Plan, BTW, not Diplomatic Immunity.

Why is it that one of the songs succeeds so much over the other one? What made it so? Didn't they both come out at the same time?

Well, adding up the versions of "Perfect" means that song is selling more like 45% of Drake, but yeah...

^^I'd say between one or the other, let the Devil came and take them both.
Sorry, I'm being too much of a hater. xD I'll try to refrain myself. I don't even hate Drake, he's alright, I just cannot be arsed with this song going to #1, especially debuting as such.

God's Plan is hook and melody oriented. It can appeal beyond the Hip-Hop audience and has better replay value. Diplomatic Immunity is lyrically oriented. It's 4 minutes of just rapping. It's just as acclaimed. Has way more discussion surrounding it in the Hip-Hop community because there's different lyrics to discuss. There is just more subject matter to talk about. But it isn't really radio friendly because there isn't as much of a focus on music as there is on God's Plan.

No. It's way more about the style of song that they are. Thank you for saying this, 'cause I was meaning to. I'm tired of people on pop forums hearing God's Plan being more sing-y and saying "clearly the right song is being streamed and bought more". Personally I like them about the same amount. It wasn't my opinion, it was the criticisms I've been reading and hearing. I work at rap/hip-hop record label, by the way, so it's not like I'm surrounding myself by pop oriented people and basing my original statement on that. I personally don't care at all about Drake and only casually enjoy "God's Plan" while not having heard "Diplomatic Immunity" at all, because again, I just don't care enough about Drake to go searching out for his music. I heard GP in passing and thought, "hey, that's not that bad." So can we drop this "lol, pop poster" sentiment we have going on here? Clearly I just didn't have a large enough sample. I'm sorry. I'm wrong.

Why is God's Plan projected to debut at #1 while Signs wasn't even a minor hit? I mean the releases of these two weren't that much different, is it because Drake took a longer break? Or what?

Signs wasn't even a real single, it was a promo song for a fashion show. Also it was released only a couple months after More Life and by then I think the public might've been sick of Drake, I know I was. His 8 month break worked, gone long enough so the oversaturation stops but not gone too long that we forget about him. Also God's Plan is a good song while Signs is not.

Can't Drake go a whole year without releasing something? It's not like he's short on money.

Can't Drake go a whole year without releasing something? It's not like he's short on money. Of course he can. But he wants to make and release more music, so why shouldn't he (I mean, even his "off" year had an album length project)? If you don't want to hear it, then just don't listen to it. It's not your prerogative as to when someone can opt to release new music or not.

You know I have given artists like Drake, Rihanna, and Bieber shit for not taking long breaks between projects but honestly that's the best way to stay relevant. As we've seen time and time again, long breaks between album cycles are not a good idea for a highly successful recording artists unless you are someone like Adele, just last year we saw Katy Perry suffer because of that choice. And of course we can blame Witness flopping on so many variables but the main reason is definitely her long ass break between Prism and Witness. Lorde's commercial presence on the pop charts suffered because of her break between albums, if she released a lead single in 2015 instead of 2017 than she probably would of been more successful on the charts.
Artists are allowed to take as long of a break as they want, but for the most part if an artist wants to stay relevant they should be continuously releasing music. Whether it be as a lead or a feature, that's always been the best way to market yourself and keep your brand relevant.

Well, the only thing that Adele had dropped between 21 and Hello, to my recollection unless I'm missing something, was the James Bond single Skyfall. And yet Hello had the biggest week at #1 in I think the entire century. Bruno Mars, on the other hand, certainly still had some momentum from Uptown Funk, which allowed 24K Magic, and more importantly That's What I Like, to succeed.
But how do you think that Adele and Bruno managed to still keep success, while Katy and Gaga didn't?

Because Adele sold like 15 million copies of 21 before 25 was released, it's precedent was huge, it was still selling relatively well for an album of it's age at the time of 25's release, so with the release of 25 people wanted to see if she lived up to the previous gargantuan music achievement.
Katy's last album was awful. Prism wasn't really that good either, when you think Katy you think teenage dream and fun-be-happy-anthem songs. She dramatically changed her sound and people didn't like it (not to mention the lyrical abomination that was Witness). It's hard to come off a 5 #1 singles album while trying to advance artistically.
Don't know a lot about Gaga's last album but what I heard on the radio didn't seem very appealing either.

Holy fuck. Its third day on Spotify now holds the record for biggest single day on US Spotify becoming only the second song to break 4 million in a day. HUMBLE. on DAMN's release day was the first.
