"Runaway" has a certain shock value to it upon first listen that can either hook you in or push you away. So I can see why it would be polarizing. Personally, I love it! :)

Album Track Reveal
#5. "One More Time" (Set You Free)
Qualifying Votes: 6 #1 Votes: 0Voters: Cody Wants Out... , sabre14 , kw9461 , tim , zack97 , Kanenrá:ke gardyfan , phil1996 , George Strait Junkie , someguy , gonecountry , bboat11 , castleoblivion26 , austin , Drummer's girl , .indulgecountry , zaclord 🌈 , Andy , toomuchboy , dub , LBTrocks This was the biggest surprise for me of a song making the list, but I'm thrilled it did. "One More Time" is a fantastic song and one of Gary's underappreciated gems off his last few albums. I think if it was on an album in the early 2000's, it definitely could've been a single, but in 2013, it wasn't a time to be releasing songs like this and watching them have success.

Sad to see all 3 songs out despite my rankings because they are all amazing. Every elimination is gonna be hard from here on out because his music is that good.

#23. "From Where I'm Sitting"
Total Points: 447 Average: 21.38 Year Released: March, 1997 Radio & Records Peak: #34 Billboard Peak: #43Rankings: .indulgecountry - 3 gardyfan - 6 Drummer's girl - 13 George Strait Junkie - 13 dub - 14 kw9461 - 14 bboat11 - 20 sabre14 - 20 phil1996 - 21 Andy - 23 LBTrocks - 23 zaclord 🌈 - 23 tim - 25 Cody Wants Out... - 26 gonecountry - 26 Kanenrá:ke - 27 castleoblivion26 - 29 austin - 30 someguy - 30 zack97 - 30 toomuchboy - 31 Following: Troublemaker jhomes87"From Where I'm Sitting" was the third career single for Gary Allan, off his debut album, Used Heart For Sale. It reached #34 on R&R and #43 on Billboard in June of 1997.
This song is great and the fact I only put it at #20, speaks to the collection of singles Gary has had. Since this concludes the five below top 30 singles from the 90's for Gary, it's right to point out the climate of labels and radio back in the 90's. Today, most labels would have parted ways with an artist after 2-3 failing singles, but Decca Records/MCA didn't give up on Gary. Even when Decca folded, they moved Gary to UMG and continued with his career. Similar stories of other artists, including Reba in the 70's-80's, who took five years to achieve her first top 10 single.

Pleased to see that the string of forgettable early-career flops is leaving us now. They were all pretty good songs, but none of them really jumped out at me. "From where I'm sitting, I can see where I stand" is a really clever hook though, and reminded me of the type of quirky lyrical structure that George Strait was always so good at finding We seem to be down to the big hits and fan favorites now, so I think this rankdown is about to get super interesting!

"From Where I'm Sitting" was my favorite discovery of this rankdown. I loved it. I can't believe it didn't even make the Top 20 here, though I suppose it's lower familiarity did it in.

#22. "Mess Me Up"
Total Points: 441 Average: 21.00 Year Released: May 30th, 2017 Mediabase Peak: #56 Billboard Peak: #45Rankings: dub - 1 bboat11 - 15 Andy - 16 sabre14 - 16 zaclord 🌈 - 16 zack97 - 18 George Strait Junkie - 20 castleoblivion26 - 21 toomuchboy - 21 austin - 22 Cody Wants Out... - 22 .indulgecountry - 22 Kanenrá:ke - 22 kw9461 - 22 gonecountry - 23 someguy - 23 tim - 23 LBTrocks - 26 Drummer's girl - 29 phil1996 - 31 gardyfan - 32 Following: Troublemaker jhomes87 "Mess Me Up" was the most recent single from Gary Allan. It was released in the spring of 2017 but has become his worst performing single of his career on R&R/MB, peaking at just #56. It was supposed to be on his album recorded in 2014-2015, but that album has gone unreleased due to the lack of success at radio from the three singles.
10 posters ranked this between 21 and 23, with 5 having it as a perfect ranking of #22 lol. I wanted "Mess Me Up" as the lead single in 2015, instead of "Hangover Tonight" and I was shocked they passed it over again in 2016 for "Do You Wish It Was Me?" By this point, it was case closed that Gary's radio career was finished and it's a mistake my UMG not just releasing the album.

sad to see "Today" go here but not one bit surprised. I love this song, though I probably shouldn't have put it Top 10 over a couple other songs. The songs I ranked from 14 through 8 could swap places easily depending on the mood I'm in when I listen to them. They are all great.
I like "Mess Me Up" a lot and am sad that it flopped as bad as it did because it deserved better. His label has really dropped the ball with him and it is unfortunate. Though in the context of this rankdown I do think this is a good place for it to go because everything that is left is amazing.

"Mess Me Up" is easily much better than the first two singles they attempted from him in the last past few years, and I feel like it probably would've at least made the Top 40 if it had been released as the lead single to his now-unreleased record instead.
"Today" was honestly better than I remembered it being. I recall not being fond of it when it was out, but when I re-listened for this RD, I liked it more than I expected.

"Today" should've made it into the lower teens, at least.

So what we learned is that the mid 90's Gary is the most hated Gary lol I adore "No Man In His Wrong Heart" and "I'll Take Today" because of his vocals on those songs! Tanya Tucker also recorded "I'll Take Today" and I would've loved to hear a duet of the two of them on it. While I love "Do You Wish It Was Me?" more than "Mess Me Up", MMU should've been the lead for the album hands down. I still don't get why radio dropped him so fast but UMG isn't helping things with single choices. I won't be shocked if the album never comes out. :( I really was disappointed in "Today" when it came out and that disappointment never went away and it's just clouded any positives the song may have for me.

The chorus of "Today" is lovely. I get why it's not a favorite of everyone, though.

Album Track Reveal
#4. "I Just Got Back From Hell" (Tough All Over)
Qualifying Votes: 7 #1 Votes: 0Voters: sabre14 , zack97 , someguy , Kanenrá:ke , tim , gonecountry , castleoblivion26 gardyfan , phil1996 , George Strait Junkie , LBTrocks , .indulgecountry , zaclord 🌈 , Andy , kw9461 , dub , toomuchboy , austin , Drummer's girl , Cody Wants Out... , bboat11 "I Just Got Back From Hell" was included on Gary's emotional and critically acclaimed Tough All Over album. It was written by Gary and the late Harley Allen, who also co-wrote Bourbon Borderline. I always though it was down to "I Just Got Back From Hell" and "Promise Broken", if they opted for a third single, which I wish they would have. This is an incredible song and it's both emotional and blunt. I also love the instrumentation and production. All the top 3 songs have at least 2 #1 placement votes.

Album Track Reveal
#3. "Promise Broken" (Tough All Over)
Qualifying Votes: 7 #1 Votes: 2 ( sabre14 , zack97 ) Voters: sabre14 , zack97 , Kanenrá:ke , tim , Cody Wants Out... , Drummer's girl , castleoblivion26 gardyfan , phil1996 , Andy , kw9461 , gonecountry , LBTrocks , .indulgecountry , zaclord 🌈 , bboat11 , dub , toomuchboy , someguy , austin , George Strait Junkie "Promise Broken" was also on Gary's Tough All Over album and is the third song from that album on our list (of 8 reveals), which is the most of any album. It was written by Deric Ruttan and Margaret Findley. Ruttan had a R&R top 40 US country single with "When You Come Around" in 2003 and has been a staple in Canadian country music since then; he's also written numerous times with Dierks Bentley. I wanted this song to be a single so very bad. First of all, its instrumentation, production and build-up is great and the vocals are on-point, but the lyrics and creativity of the song's perspective is what really sold me on this track. The song's narrator is speaking like he is a broken promise. I'm glad this did well and others agreed with me that this is a phenomenal song. Any guesses on what the top 2 will be?
