Once you all saw I was hosting personal rankdowns, I bet you figured it was only a matter of time before I made a hip hop rankdown, huh? Well, it's finally here. I've been sitting on this list for...Jesus, nearly 3 months, optimizing it behind the scenes all the while.
I want to make something different, though. This is not exactly a list of my favorite rap songs. If it was, there would more esoteric, non-canonical songs, or songs that are heavily production-driven. There would be a lot of crossover between that hypothetical list and the one I'm going to give you, don't get me wrong, and all these songs are indeed amazing. But there was a specific impetus behind forming the playlist. I want to make some effort to improve the rap discussions on Pulse Music, as futile as that endeavor might be. I want to break up the false dichotomies between club bangers where the rappers are invisible, pop rap that is way more pop than rap, and flash-rappers who ultimately leave one feeling empty. This rankdown is designed around both legendary MCs at the top of their game and my favorite verses of all-time in general, and it's meant to show the many unique ways artists display their talents on the mic.
Acquaint yourself with these songs thoroughly, then PM me your ranking of all of them from best (#1) to worst (#50). Leave the artist names in or not, either way is fine, but be sure to number them. After sending your list, you may make changes to your ranks up to 24 hours before the deadline. Results are determined by adding up each person's ranks for each song; the song with the least points wins.

{old text that doesn't matter anymore}I will be revealing the songs in chunks via rebus-style clues (with years included to narrow the options down). Once either every clue in a set has been guessed correctly or 24 hours has passed, I will post the answers and the next set of clues. The first set will have 13 songs, second 12, third 13, and fourth 12. After all the songs have been revealed, I will post the Spotify and YouTube playlists and officially open the rankdown for submissions. As you can see in the title, the deadline is not confirmed, but this will for sure be a longer submission period than my previous rankdowns, since I'm starting it before my current 70s rankdown is over and I don't know exactly how familiar the songs will be to everybody. This fact is kind of why I'm doing forum hints for these songs, though; so that people can get a head start by listening along as the songs are revealed.
Two guidelines for your guesses:
1. I eliminated any musicians who have had their own artist rankdowns. I struggled more with leaving out some of those (Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Kanye West) than others (Drake, Nick Minaj, J. Cole), but, yea. All of them have had their time to shine; let's watch someone else win.
2. I tried to avoid songs that have been in previous/songs that will be in future personal rankdowns. Some songs I was keeping no matter what, but this has always been my policy for rankdown choices.
First set will be up in a bit.
