The genre of hip-hop and rap music has been relentless so far this year, with dozens of different artists ruling the charts like Drake, Post Malone, 6ix9ine, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, Post Malone, Kanye West, J. Cole, Travis Scott and XXXTENTACION. We have seen more hip-hop and rap music on the Billboard Hot 100 this year than any other year before. With our most famous rap artist, Drake, breaking Billboard Hot 100, Billboard 200, Apple Music and most notably Spotify records.
But why such a big year for hip hop and rap?
Well consider this, being a high school student myself I can most definitely say that high schoolers and middle schoolers rule the music industry these days now than any other time before with many flocking to big streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, etc. These main streaming platforms have so far took control of the industry and in my opinion have changed music and the charts for the better.
In 2018, social media blew up with viral meme and challenges. These viral inspired memes and challenges help weaker or smaller artists to become bigger and expand their platform. Many artists grew bigger so far this year, like Bazzi, Khalid, Normani, BTS, 6ix9ine, and most notably Juice WRLD. Juice WRLD is an artist born from SoundCloud much like many rap and hip-hop artists have through the website but didn't "blow up" until his number three peaking hit-song, Lucid Dreams, took the U.S. by storm exploding nearly overnight into the massive club-rocking hit it is known to be today. But what about long-range? How do rap artists keep their reputation healthy for the U.S. audience? Well, they make more music much like Juice WRLD, Khalid, Normani, BTS, 6ix9ine and Bazzi are doing. They use more "bigger" names on song features to help keep their names alive in the industry.
In conclusion, more people listen to hip-hop and rap music now in 2018 then even in the early and mid-2000s when rap was really blowing up with many homegrown artists to spring into the huge names we know and love today.
