The turnover is partially due to sales completely collapsing. An album like Scorpion, Invasion of Privacy or Beerbongs & Bentleys can only do so much from streaming only, which usually results in around 90k or so. I think at one point the album chart might end up being completely worthless. Only if the "album" as a format becomes completely worthless Isn't it already starting to now that an artist can tack additional songs onto an album halfway through a tracking week to inflate it's streams and nonalbum remixes count toward album consumption?

Consuming music on an album outside of an album purchase has been a trend for some time, long before 2014. Of course, because of legal streaming outlets gaining momentum in the last several years, overall album sales have declined considerably. Nonetheless- pnob, that is probably true. The fact that most acts are still releasing albums, ewither physically or digitally, means the album - as a purchase option - isn't going anywhere at the moment.

Gimmicks to manipulate chart position is not a new thing. Possible, rules could change on that regard. Anyway, it appears the album as a format is not going anywhere.

Nicki being on 4 #1 albums this year. We love a reigning queen. So you're saying she can't do it alone and has to guest on others' projects? Degeneres queen doesn't mind sacrificing a position to help the lessers.

No, but the gimmicks typically haven't involved there being additions to an album midway through a tracking week and having those additions be retroactive. If the content of what constitutes an album is no longer integral, what is an album?

Not sure the big emphasis on sales as we all know: Buying an album isn't the only way to "consume " it anymore Streaming is a lot easier to manipulate, it makes far less money overall, and makes it easier to have a "hit" without truly having one. A large cult fanbase can stream something to get huge numbers, but that doesn't mean the general public likes it. And streaming is far more susceptable to payola in my opinion.

Fine - just saying - the decades-old album chart - although it doesn't change in real time and as fast as everyone likes, it does change to react to the market.
Will the album as a format, go away because of the little Travis Scott v Nicki Minaj chart position war from a couple weeks back? Probably not.
Will the album as a format, go away because rabid fans can sit at their computer all day and stream the same one or twos songs over and over and have it count towards an album stream? probably not
Will the album as a format go away because streaming is easier to manipulate? probably not
Will fewer people purchase an album for 10 dollars when they can "rent" the same album for 10 dollars a month? Absolutely - but that doesn't mean the format is dead, just means physical sales are.

Billboard's 200 formula is obviously flawed and needs to be updated. It gives way too much power to one hot song when it should reflect streaming consumption and people's interest in the whole album.

Exactly. They should adjust the BB200 to weight streams the way the British album chart does

Not sure the big emphasis on sales as we all know: Buying an album isn't the only way to "consume " it anymore A large cult fanbase can stream something to get huge numbers Not really. And more so not enough to make a huge dent in the charts. Honestly, this type of claim in general has always been overhyped. I remember when physical singles were a thing, fan groups would organize to buy multiple copies of singles (and albums). But even if 1,000 people bought 20 copies of a single each (the most a store would have I'd think), that's only 20,000 copies and not enough to get something to #1. Streaming is the same; the way streams count, it's almost impossible for a group of fans to stream enough to make a big impact.

^My guess is that the bundles offered during the first week that did well then didn't carry over well into this one.
On another note, I do hope Alice in Chains manages to be in the top 10.

that's about -87.5% drop in pure sales. considering bundle and big streaming, it's just normal range in this dead pure salea days I think. her last album did -83% drop(pure sales) in 2016.
more important thing is her streaming number. -50% drop. I heard ariana's album had not so good word of mouth and polarizing reaction among fans for pharell produced tracks. probably the reason why her streams are getting big drops.

I thought Ariana would of had a slightly better hold. Still not bad. Also good hold for Queen thanks to Fefe.

Ariana neck-on-neck with Nicki on second week when Nicki's on third? Whoa didn't see that coming.
Regarding Fefe, it's not like Ariana doesn't have hit songs in streaming (Breathin AND GIAW top ten-ish Spotify)
Nicki is doing amazingly well.

FEFE is currently #1 streaming song with 24m. ariana doesn't have that size of streaming hit. and as album week buff is over, those 2 songs won't even do 20m together while nicki is getting 20k sps every week from 1 song.
her number without fefe so far sales : 77,836 -> 28,577(-63%) -> 10~12k(-60%) streaming : 103m -> 60m(-40%) -> 46~50m (-20%)

Cardi's on track to drop from the top 10 for the first time since release. :(
OK for Ariana. She's a pop artist and part of her strong debut was a sizable chunk of actual sales. I haven't seen anyone this year holding up well in actual sales at all after the first week.

Nicki wouldn't be as high as she is without FEFE, although she'd still be top 10.
Ariana's drop is around as expected when you look at her history and that she did bundles. The SPS drop from this week to the next will be a much better indicator of long term potential.

Billboard's 200 formula is obviously flawed and needs to be updated. It gives way too much power to one hot song when it should reflect streaming consumption and people's interest in the whole album. Agreed. There's no line between album and singles artists anymore because 1 mega streaming single makes you an albums artist by default (and on the contrary, having no streaming hits makes your album seem like a flop too)
