nonetheless, hits can sell an album but that's still an album sold.
No one knows how many times a CD is played but it still only counts as one sale.
streams over years can count as multiple album sales.
No argument is going to change that there is double counting going on that didn't take place even if no physical cd single was available streaming services existed and illegal Napster existed. streaming leads to double counting and making a 10 track album with 2-3 songs avg. 100M streams and track 4-10 have 10 million streams as an album streamed almost 400M times as if the entire thing has 400M streams
can't do much about it now but it's not an accurate reflection of popularity evenly measured as digitals/albums/cds/cassettes evened the scales a lot better.
That said, congrats BTS

Agreed. There's no line between album and singles artists anymore because 1 mega streaming single makes you an albums artist by default (and on the contrary, having no streaming hits makes your album seem like a flop too) How did you make that distinction in the early 2000s when labels would make big singles album only on iTunes so you couldn't get it without buying the whole album? Labels rarely did that in my opinion (and in this case, there was still a tradeoff then - worse singles performance; singles and albums were still mutually exclusive, now a hot single = good consumption album sales, and they're not mutually exclusive The most relevant example that comes to mind is Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" being radio only and driving the sales of his album

counting album sales into hot 100 is nonsense as current billboard sea rule which is double counting to album chart. so why not. lol
the difference between hit single driving album sales back then and in this streaming era is people bought the whole album vs people listen to 1 song and regarded as album sales.
including streaming is no issue, it's how they counted as album sales. same goes to TEA
UK album chart rule. that's what every album chart should do. (even tho it's not that perfect but much better than couting anyhting)

I just did quick SEA check compare with UK style for this week top SEA acts. I can't do fully uk rule because I don't have stream number for evry track, so I did avg for every track except top 2 tracks. (UK chart make avg of top 12 except top 2 and multiply 12 = counting only 12tracks) so some acts with many tracks and high popularity of album tracks suffered some. especially drake. he's not good example on here. I used 1,340 SEA ratio for this as when I checked SEA ratio last week, top sea acts had around 1,340 ratio. SEA and Streaming for top2 tracks are from HDD.
