This band/album was talked about some on the R&R boards, but I don't think anyone's said anything much about it here so far.
I burned a copy of it back in late February just to see what the fuss was about, but I burned so much music in the first half of the year that I couldn't keep up. I only just started listening to it within the past 2 months.
The first time I listened to it, I didn't like it much at all. I was already predisposed to not liking it (despite liking "PDA" fine) because it's been forced down my throat all year in the magazines, but I hated Paul's monotonous vocals and I felt the band relied way too heavily on steady eighth note rhythms, which fatigued my ears by the end of the album.
I probably didn't listen to it again 'til a month later/ago. Over repeated listen, I grew to be fascinated with their songs and now I really enjoy it. Every song holds up very well.
After a few listens, I noticed that "PDA," the song of theirs I knew the best by far, was definitely not the best song. I like 3 or 4 other ones better than it.
And what was amazing to me was that I was realizing last week that "NYC" was one of my favorite songs on the record and then last Friday night on MTV2's Subterranean, it shows up with a video! A couple days later, I concluded that it was my favorite song on the whole album. That's awesome that it's the new single. It won't go anywhere, but it's nice to know that now that I'm getting into the album, they're still promoting it. I figured "Obstacle 1" was the last hurrah.
Who else likes this record?

I haven't heard the record, but I loved the first two singles from the album. From what I've heard of "NYC", it's good too. Maybe in a few years I'll buy the album.

Aren't they too hip for you? ;)
Anyways, I like everything I've heard. I will get my copy someday, as it's really awesome. The funny thing is that you don't "get" BRMC, although they're similar in style. Both are awesome because their music has homage to Joy Division. That automatically makes for a good band. Coincidentally it seems.

Aren't they too hip for you? ;) That's what I was expecting, but after several listens, my jaded subconscience has said, "Nick, if you're really liking this record, then more power to you." In fact, I'm gonna buy a real copy next week, when I get Korn. I'll get my real copy of The Used with the new Blink this week, because I've been listening to it for longer. The funny thing is that you don't "get" BRMC, although they're similar in style. Both are awesome because their music has homage to Joy Division. That automatically makes for a good band. Coincidentally it seems. Maybe further exposure to BRMC will wear me down. Regretfully, I still haven't heard an actual Joy Division song. I think a professor actually did play a song of theirs a few weeks ago, but he didn't "have time" to play the whole thing, so I've already forgotten it. Soon my curiosity will pull them to the top of my priority list and I'll buy their records. They only have two right? That makes it pretty easy. Sadly, one person I bet I could talk a lot about this record with is Confused Onlooker from R&R. But due to our very public falling out and the fact that he does not post here, I'll just leave it at that.

Yeah, Joy Division only recorded two studio albums, if that's what you're talking about. I know that they had a collection that was half-live and half-outtakes, called Still, which features "Dead Souls", a popular song of theirs.
I know that many cuts were played on the awesome Spy.

This is a great cd. I bought it off of one listen of Obstacle #1 which was sorely underrated and should have been a HUGE hit. I didnt even know they were the ones who did "Bright Lights". This is a really good cd...lots of different sounds..some Echo and the Bunnymen in here too. Its one of those cds that you can really listen to over and over again because its not boring and repetitive.

My personal favorite on Turn On the Bright Lights is Say Hello To the Angels. Stella Is a Diver and She's Always Down is also a great song.
As for Joy Division, I recommend checking out their Substance cd which is kind of a best of and has a lot of their early singles that aren't on anything else. If you're looking for just a few songs in particular, I suggest checking out Dead Souls (NIN did an awesome cover of this), She's Lost Control, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Transmission, Day Of the Lords, New Dawn Fades, Atmosphere, for starters.
