I am mostly happy about this top 10, but have mixed feelings about a couple things... Specifically, Tim and Jo Dee both deserved spots in this top 10 WAY more than Chely Wright and Montgomery Gentry...
However, there is way more in this top 10 for me to be thrilled with!!!!!!!! George! Sara!! Dixie Chicks!!! Lee Ann!! Shania! MARTINA!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel like the winner will come down to Sara vs. Lee Ann, but I would be thrilled to see the majority of these songs get a win!

Overplayed. Overrated. Overstayed. I. Regret. Nothing. It's definitely overplayed (most played gold recurrent of the 2000's). Heck, we still play it, which is extremely rare for 2019 corporate country radio. I think "Something Like That" is such a classic song though. The melody and music are fantastic -- both go together so well and is immediately memorable to the listener. The descriptive lyrics in the verses are also great and when I was a kid, I could paint a perfect picture in my head. To me, it's a song that defines country radio of not only 1999, but of the next decade. I can see why some think it's overplayed and overrated but it's a song that has a unifying draw for most country listeners.

Especially when you consider that modern songs that have a "unifying draw" for country listeners are stuff like "Cruise" or "Body Like A Backroad", that definitely puts things in perspective and makes one yearn for the days when songs like "Something Like That" were the big hits... Lol

still bitter that "Whatever You Say" almost missed the Top 10. This is easily tied as my favorite single Martina has ever released (along with "Independence Day"). This definitely deserved better.
Anyway, gonna move on now to reveal to the Top 5 tonight!

“He Didn’t Have to Be” isn’t my favorite Brad song but holy moly, it might be one of the best written country singles of my lifetime. Superb writing behind an emotional subject. My two oldest nephews literally cry when they hear that because their stepdad did so much for them.
I’m glad nobody tanked it but should have made the top 5.

Yeah, I would've liked to see it in the top 5 over a few of the songs that did. I probably underranked it because I've heard it so many times, but it really is a A+ lyric, the kind of song you don't come across often. I think "Something Like That" is such a classic song though. The melody and music are fantastic -- both go together so well and is immediately memorable to the listener. The descriptive lyrics in the verses are also great and when I was a kid, I could paint a perfect picture in my head. One of the all-time catchiest songs with an absolute all-time melody. Even though I went to rural school growing up, country music wasn't considered "cool" at the time, but that song had a near 100% approval rating - everyone would sing along when it came on. I'm usually the first to penalize a song for overplay, but that's one of the few exceptions - I still crank it every time I hear it. Just an all-time classic, and a damn shame it fell short of the top 10.

My hunch said George was going to miss the top 3 I just thought it was going to be "Little Good-Byes" over "You Were Mine"...not complaining though because the latter is a far superior song. "I'll Think of a Reason Later" seems to be the perennial favorite on Pulse so I'm fully expecting its winning streak to continue.

“Little Good-Byes” is fantastic, but I am glad seeing it be the first to leave the top 5. SHeDAISY has plenty of songs that I prefer to this one.
“Write This Down” - This song has been beaten into the ground so much through the years that it is definitely far from being one of my favorite George Strait songs. But there is no denying that this is one of the most iconic country hits of the ‘90s! Probably second only to “Something Like That” in terms of songs that represent this year. The melody is so fun and immediately recognizable, and this type of witty ditty is right in George’s vocal wheelhouse. While it would have been cool to see George win another year-end rankdown, I’m not too disappointed to see this one miss, because it is sure to win an album Rankdown in the next couple months!
Now for this top 3... I don’t think I’ve rooted for a 3-way tie so hard in my life!!!!! 😍

Just because that song has already done so well in rankdowns, it doesn’t have nearly as compelling of a story. This is NPTF’s first rankdown where it hasn’t been pitted against Sara’s other fully-established rankdown juggernauts, and it is also YWM’s first chance to get revenge since it was brutally done dirty in the Dixie Chicks’ artist Rankdown. However, NPTF is also pretty much a lock to win her latest album rankdown (if it ever actually happens), so even though that’s my highest remaining rank, I’d say Dixie Chicks are my pick for the winners!!!! Although realistically it’ll be YWM at 3, NPTF at #2, and ITOARL at #1...

“You Were Mine” is probably my favorite song of DCX’s entire career ♥️ Everything about it slays so hard; especially the way that the haunting fiddle complements Natalie’s voice! I’m thrilled to see it do so well here after barely making the top 10 in their own artist rankdown. I’d say revenge has been hard fought!
