How is this possible? I thought literally everyone knew about The Long Black Train! (Personally, I'm a sucker for those rolling baritone/basso voices....Josh, Trace Adkins, Ray Benson (Asleep at the Wheel) and Dan May (look him up on youtube/CDbaby, he's killer)

Pre-Reveal Questionnaire1. What song(s) could you see winning the Josh Turner rankdown? 2. What other songs do you see ranking in the top 5? 3. What songs do you expect to land in the bottom 5? 4. Which of his #1 hits (Your Man, Would You Go with Me, Why Don't We Just Dance, All Over Me,) do you think will be eliminated first and where? 5. Which of his album cuts/non-singles (You Don't Mess Around with Jim, Loretta Lynn's Lincoln, One Woman Man, As Fast as I Could, I Was There, Where the Girls Are, I Serve a Savior) do you think will place highest? Lowest? 6. Which of his six country studio albums (so excluding the recent gospel project) do you expect to lose all its songs first? 7. Any other thoughts/predictions?

1. What song(s) could you see winning the Josh Turner rankdown? I'm going to guess it'll be between "Long Black Train" and "Would You Go With Me"
2. What other songs do you see ranking in the top 5? "Why Don't We Just Dance", "Lay Low", and possibly either "Your Man" or "Time Is Love"
3. What songs do you expect to land in the bottom 5? "Find Me a Baby", "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", "Alligator Stroll", "What It Ain't", and "I Serve a Savior"
4. Which of his #1 hits do you think will be eliminated first and where? It'll probably be "All Over Me" but I still expect it to land inside the top 10
5. Which of his album cuts/non-singles do you think will place highest? "Loretta Lynn's Lincoln" Lowest? "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" or "I Serve a Savior"
6. Which of his six country studio albums do you expect to lose all its songs first? Assuming “Lay Low” makes it to the top 5 Everything Is Fine could be the first album out
7. Any other thoughts/predictions? Josh has a rather strong discography overall and some great songs that just never grow old at all. I still love to hear him on the radio and always find myself singing along with him.

2. What other songs do you see ranking in the top 5? Long Black Train, Why Don't We Just Dance, Lay Low, Your Man
3. What songs do you expect to land in the bottom 5? You Don't Mess Around With Jim, Alligator Stroll, I Serve a Savior, I Wouldn't Be a Man, Where the Girls Are
4. Which of his #1 hits (Your Man, Would You Go with Me, Why Don't We Just Dance, All Over Me) do you think will be eliminated first and where? All Over Me. Top 15.
5. Which of his album cuts/non-singles (You Don't Mess Around with Jim, Loretta Lynn's Lincoln, One Woman Man, As Fast as I Could, I Was There, Where the Girls Are, I Serve a Savior) do you think will place highest? Lowest? As Fast as I Could; You Don't Mess Around with Jim
6. Which of his six country studio albums (so excluding the recent gospel project) do you expect to lose all its songs first? Everything Is Fine
7. Any other thoughts/predictions? Alligator Stroll is still a so random song added to this rankdown.

7. Any other thoughts/predictions? Alligator Stroll is still a so random song added to this rankdown. It was added for two main reasons: one, it had a music video, and two, because it would be an easy last place imo. And thus it was, "Alligator Stroll" ran away with the bottom of the rankdown with well over 60 point deficit over the next lowest song that ultimately finished ahead of it. A whimsical children's song from a 2013 country singer-heavy compilation for Sarah Boyton's Frog Trouble. Despite a huge swath of #25 ranks being wiped out here with this reveal (11/20 of us listed it last), we do amazingly manage to see our first top 10 loss right off the bat as Kanenrá:ke pulls a Flops here. "If you like a little country and some slow rock n' roll You can follow right behind me with the alligator stroll"

Alligator Stroll is a cute little tune and fun....In the overall scheme it's not close to the depth & quality of most of his others....

With the obvious last place contender out of the way, we immediately dive into losses for Josh Turner's singles catalog, taking out "Find Me a Baby." The second and final single from Punching Bag, this song whiffed on the charts and missed the top 40. Most on Pulse seemed to agree it was a poor single choice as its the first one to be eliminated from the rankdown. Still, it's a cute uptempo with his signature jangly neo-traditional production and is notable for having a bridge breakdown where he invited his family (sons and wife) into the audio booth to sing along with him. It isn't without great losses though as three posters do find themselves losing a top 10 here. "Well now me and my baby are on baby number three When we all get warmed up, you oughta hear us sing"

We turn to Josh Turner's most recent musical offering for our next elimination: the title cut from his 2018 gospel project, I Serve a Savior. The only representation from the era included in this rankdown, it didn't last long. Even though he's had several hit singles and deep cuts with a religious tinge to them, the most overt example of his Christian faith didn't go over too well as it almost exclusively hung out in the bottom 5 during the submission process. Two more lose a top 10, one of which is a top 5 (sorry George Strait Junkie), and a number of ranks in the teens also get wiped out. Although, for the most part, most opted to slot this one in at the bottom of their lists. "God sent his only son to save us He died upon a cross for all our sin I praise the precious name of Jesus He walked out of the grave they laid him in"

After taking some shots at his 2010s material, we go all the way back to his debut record for the next loss. "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" was the random album cut that I picked from Long Black Train to help pad out the list (since he doesn't have the largest set of singles despite being around for over 15 years). This swinging old school tune about outlaw vigilante justice with honkytonk piano and charismatic background vocals was originally made famous by folk artist Jim Croce in the 1970s, whose version was a big hit. Turner brings the personality needed to make it work, but ultimately it wasn't popular with most participants as it landed decisively at the bottom here. However, we do see our biggest loss of the rankdow so far as LBTrocks takes a hit in his top 3. Despite this, he's the only one who ranked it top 10, though there were a sizable chunk of ranks in the mid-teens as well. "Well a hush fell over the pool room When Jimmy come boppin' in off the street And when the cutting was done The only thing that wasn't bloody Was the souls of the big mans feet"

very rarely does a song with a religious theme hit me. but this song did like a rock. Josh nailed it. to me this is one of his best vocal performances.

I'll take the perfect ranking for You Don't Mess Around With Jim. It is such a weird song but I have not much interest in listening to it again.

Much like "Find Me a Baby" derailed all his momentum and brought the Punching Bag era to an early close, "All About You" effectively did the same to the Deep South era, Turner's most recent mainstream country release. And much like that one made an early exit in this rankdown, "All About You," a simple uptempo song about showering his other half with praise, is the second radio single of his career to be eliminated. This one consistently trended toward the bottom of the rankdown and even though a pair of #5s came in near the end of the submissions (courtesy of LBTrocks and ClevelandRox), it rounds out the bottom 5 of the Josh Turner rankdown, 9 points shy of sneaking out a finish in the top 20. "Bust my butt for every cent Just to spend all them dead presidents Yeah, it's all about you Girl, it's all about you"

In defense of "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", the song was written by Croce and appears on his 3rd studio album of the same name....Croce was a genius and was just about to become a household name when he died in a plane crash in 1973...Most of his stuff is memorable (in a good way), so JT covering this is kinda brilliant.
AND...the entire album is worth a listen. It contains several of his biggest hits plus a couple of lesser knowns that are as good or better than the hits....

Because it's cute and I like it lol Also... Like, how low must your opinion of Josh's catalog be to put a song like THIS in your top 10 My opinion on Josh's single cataloge isn't all that high to be honest. His albums are all good to great but he very consistently picked the songs I don't find all that interesting to be singles.

"Find Me A Baby" is a really good song, but was absolutely the wrong choice to be a single from the awesome Punching Bag album... They should have gone with the title track instead, imo. I do think that last-place-other-than-Alligator-Stroll is a bit too harsh of a placement for it, because it IS a good song. I definitely jam to it when I am in the right mood. I just wish it hadn't destroyed his momentum when he was coming off such a huge resurgence! "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" could be an interesting story song, but imo has a bit too much of a novelty feel to it. I absolutely expected it to be near the bottom. It is one where the quirks make it a fun song to listen to about once a year or so. More often than that, and I would find it to be annoying really quickly. "Jacksonville" would have (rightfully) done much better here had it been included! THAT'S the hit from his debut that never was! "I Serve A Savior" - I actually haven't listened to his gospel album yet, but I have really enjoyed every song I have heard from it so far! This song is so well-produced. "All About You" - This is a terrible song lmao... But for some unknown, ungodly reason, I love it! Although apparently not as much as Flops The song is just such a bro moment, from the worshiping of the girl for her physical attributes all the way to the generic lazily-sung melody in the chorus... But shit, I can't help but jam to this one! I also hate how this one destroyed his momentum, but frankly his era getting tanked after one hit wasn't nearly as shocking at that point in his career versus when it happened in 2012.

"Jacksonville" would've been the other contender for my random album cut pick from his debut. I ultimately went with "Jim" because it was a cover of a big hit + it was something different for his catalog. I love "Jacksonville" too. Definitely one of the highlights on his largely pedestrian debut record.

"Where the Girls Are" is the second deep cut from his studio albums to fall. This song was one of the more buzzed-about tracks from his most recent country record, Deep South, and many (myself included) thought it would've been an obvious choice for a follow-up hit to "Hometown Girl." Alas, it never saw the light of day and only slid in one spot ahead of the single they did push instead ("All About You"), narrowly missing the bottom 5 (which it stayed in for a good chunk of the submission process) by less than 10 points. The next highest song at #19, however, has a cushiony lead of over 50 points. Lyrically, it's a bit of a bro-lite song about boys having their eyes on the ladies, but elevated by Josh Turner's neo-traditional production, voice, and charm. Still, I was the only poster to like this one enough to save a spot in my top 10 for it. recordyear, OTOH, loses his #25 here. "Yeah, they're the reason any boy's ever college-bound The fuel that keeps trucks heading into town It's right around the age of thirteen Been jumping hurdles, long just to see"

Now, this loss is heartbreaking for me. I love "I Was There." This deep cut from Punching Bag is probably my favorite non-single he's ever done. His vocals just resonate so beautifully on the verses and the melody and power in which he belts out the chorus is chilling, especially given the lyrics (particularly the final verse about avoiding a near-death collision). I still remember getting goosebumps the first time I heard this one after buying the album. Sadly, it received far less fanfare from the bulk of y'all as only three others joined me in placing this one top 10 in their lists. Six posters lose a bottom 5 instead, including the last place rank for ClevelandRox. "I was there last night on Highway Nine When you answered the phone and ran right through that stop sign I was in the cab of that big rig and that trucker's ear Made him swerve to the right and miss you by a hair I was there"

Our third back-to-back album cut loss comes at the first expense for Everything Is Fine. "One Woman Man," a simple uptempo ditty was a cover of a song made famous by Johnny Horton in the 1950s and then again by George Jones in the 1980s, both of which reached the top 10 of the country charts with it. Josh's version, much like his departed cover of "You Don't Mess Around with Jim," was just an obscure album cut, but it wasn't without its fans as it received four top 10 ranks, two of which were top 5s. Most opted to place this one in the mid-teens, however, which kept it from moving any further. "I'd climb the highest mountain If it reached up to the sky To prove that I love ya I'd jump off and fly"
