Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' Leaps to No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 4/8/2019 by Gary Trust Plus, Billie Eilish earns first her top 10 with "Bad Guy," from her first Billboard 200 No. 1 album, "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" Lil Nas X blasts from No. 15 to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his debut hit and viral smash "Old Town Road." Plus, Billie Eilish scores her first Hot 100 top 10, as "Bad Guy" bounds onto the chart at No. 7. The song is her from album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, which launches as her first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Additionally, Ariana Grande's "7 Rings," which falls to No. 3 on the Hot 100 after eight weeks at No. 1, becomes her first leader on the Radio Songs chart. Let's run down the top 10 of the newest Hot 100 (dated April 13), which blends all-genre U.S. streaming, radio airplay and digital sales data. All charts will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (April 9). "Old Town Road" becomes the 1,086th No. 1 in the Hot 100's 60-year history. Here's a look at highlights of the list's new leader by Atlanta native Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill; he was born April 9, 1999, and, thus, celebrates his 20th birthday tomorrow with a host of chart honors to unwrap. No. 1 in streaming: "Road" roars to No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart, from No. 7, up 60% to 46.6 million U.S. streams in the week ending April 4, according to Nielsen Music. The song wins the Hot 100's top Streaming Gainer award for a third consecutive week. "Road" also rises 11-3 on Digital Song Sales, surging by 83% to 22,000 downloads sold in the week ending April 4, as it claims top Sales Gainer honors for the second time in three weeks. The song additionally gains by 190% to 11.9 million all-format audience impressions in the week ending April 7, as it continues to approach the Radio Songs chart. Debut 'Moves': While Lil Nas X is the first artist to take an initial Hot 100 entry to No. 1 since Bradley Cooper just five weeks earlier, thanks to Cooper's duet "Shallow" with Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X is the first artist unaccompanied by another act to top the Hot 100 on a first try since Cardi B, whose "Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)" spent three weeks at No. 1 in October 2017. Lil Nas X is the first male artist (in a lead role) to lead the Hot 100 in a first visit since Desiigner took "Panda" to the top for two weeks in May 2016. 15 to 1: "Road" makes the second-biggest jump to No. 1 on the Hot 100 this year. "Shallow" soared 21-1 following its win for best original song at the 91st Academy Awards. Quick 'Road' to No. 1: "Road" reaches No. 1 on the Hot 100 in just its sixth week on the chart. While the song it replaces at the summit, Grande's "7 Rings," debuted at No. 1, "Road" marks the fastest flight to No. 1 for an artist's debut entry (in a lead role) since Zayn's "Pillowtalk" opened on top in February 2016. As Zayn was already known as a former member of powerhouse boy band One Direction, Lil Nas X makes the swiftest ascent to No. 1 on the Hot 100 for an act with no prior Hot 100 history at all since Baauer blasted in at the top spot with his five-week leader "Harlem Shake" in March 2013. Columbia in command: After buzz began building for "Road," Lil Nas X signed with Columbia Records. Now, the label boasts its first Hot 100 No. 1 since The Chainsmokers' "Closer," featuring Halsey, reigned for 12 weeks from September through November 2016. "Road" is the first debut Hot 100 No. 1 for an artist on Columbia since OMI's "Cheerleader" stood atop the chart's pyramid for six weeks in 2015. NIN at No. 1: As "Road" samples Nine Inch Nails' track "34 Ghost IV," from the industrial rock band's 2008 album Ghosts I–IV, NIN's Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross sport co-writing and co-producing credit on "Road." (Lil Nas X also earns a writing credit, while YoungKio additionally claims producer credit.) Reznor and Ross make their first trip to No. 1 on the Hot 100 as writers and producers. As a band, NIN hit a No. 17 Hot 100 high in August 1999 with "The Day the World Went Away" (written and co-produced by Reznor). No. 1 hip-hop & rap: "Road" concurrently becomes Lil Nas X's first No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts, leaping from No. 7 on each list. 'Road' ahead: "Road" should benefit on next week's charts (dated April 20) thanks its new remix, featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, released Friday, April 5; data for the remix's first full tracking week will feed next week's tallies, which will reflect the streaming and sales week of April 5-11 (with both the remix and original version counting toward the song's singular chart placement). Post Malone's former one-week Hot 100 leader "Sunflower (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)," with Swae Lee, rebounds 3-2 and Grande's "7 Rings" descends to No. 3 after eight weeks at No. 1, her career-best rule among her two toppers; "Thank U, Next" led for seven weeks beginning in November. Still, "7 Rings" becomes Grande's first No. 1 on Radio Songs, rising from No. 2 despite a 3% percent dip to 88.7 million in audience. Grande previously reached a No. 2 high on the chart with "Problem," featuring Iggy Azalea, in 2014 (and sent five subsequent singles to No. 3, including "Next"). Post Malone's solo single "Wow." drops to No. 4 on the Hot 100 from its No. 2 peak; Halsey's former two-week No. 1 "Without Me" falls 4-5; and Cardi B and Bruno Mars' "Please Me" retreats 5-6 after reaching No. 3. Billie Eilish notches her first Hot 100 top 10, as "Bad Guy" vaults onto the chart at No. 7. The song is her from album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, which arrives as her first Billboard 200 No. 1. She outdoes her prior best Hot 100 rank, as fellow Asleep song "Bury a Friend" reached No. 14 in February. After the official video for "Bad Guy" premiered March 29, the song starts at No. 2 on Streaming Songs with 34.7 million U.S. streams. On Digital Song Sales, the track enters at No. 7 (16,000 sold). "Bad Guy" is one of five songs that Eilish places in the Hot 100's top 40, joined by "Friend" (41-25); current pop radio single "When the Party's Over" (a re-entry at No. 29, a new high); "Wish You Were Gay" (84-31); and "Xanny" (new at No. 35). (She had previously appeared in the top 40 only with "Friend.") Jonas Brothers' "Sucker," which started as the trio's first No. 1 on the March 16-dated Hot 100, lifts 9-8, while achieving top Airplay Gainer honors for a fourth week. The track becomes the group's first Radio Songs top 10, pushing 12-8 (69 million, up 24%). Marshmello and Bastille's No. 2 Hot 100 hit "Happier" backtracks 6-9, while ruling the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart for a 29th week, and J. Cole's No. 4-peaking Hot 100 hit "Middle Child" slips 7-10. Find out more Hot 100 news on Billboard.com this week, and, for all chart news, you can listen (and subscribe) to Billboard's Chart Beat Podcast and Pop Shop Podcast and follow billboard and billboardcharts . Billie Eilish Earns First Hot 100 Top 10, Breaks Record For Most Simultaneous Hits Among Women
News
By Xander Zellner | April 09, 2019 10:39 AM EDT Billie Eilish
Eilish charts 14 songs on the Hot 100 as she debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
As Billie Eilish celebrates her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 (dated April 13), as When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? launches with 313,000 equivalent album units, according to Nielsen Music, the alt-pop singer-songwriter tallies her first top 10 song on the Billboard Hot 100 and breaks the record for the most simultaneously charted Hot 100 titles among women, with 14.
Of the album's 13 songs, 12 make the Hot 100 (the set's final track, "Goodbye," falls just shy), and are joined by additional tracks "Lovely," with Khalid, and "Ocean Eyes."
Encompassing the Hot 100's 60-year history, Eilish passes Cardi B, who charted 13 songs on the April 21, 2018-dated chart, concurrent with the No. 1 arrival of her debut LP Invasion of Privacy on the Billboard 200. Ariana Grande and Beyoncé both logged 12 simultaneous Hot 100 entries, coinciding with the Billboard 200-topping debuts of Thank U, Next and Lemonade on Feb. 23 this year and May 14, 2016, respectively. Rounding out the category's top five, Taylor Swift tallied 11 titles at once when Speak Now opened atop the Billboard 200 in 2010.
Drake holds the record for most simultaneous Hot 100 entries among all acts, 27, on July 14, 2018, when Scorpion started at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Leading the way, Eilish's "Bad Guy" bounds onto the Hot 100 at No. 7, marking her first top 10 on the chart. She places five songs in the 40; before this week, she scored one top 40 hit, "Bury a Friend," which reached a No. 14 high in February.
Here's a look at all 14 of Eilish's songs on the April 13-dated Hot 100:
Hot 100 Rank, Title No. 7, "Bad Guy" (debut) No. 25, "Bury a Friend" No. 29, "When the Party's Over" (re-entry, new peak) No. 31, "Wish You Were Gay" No. 35, "Xanny" (debut) No. 41, "You Should See Me in a Crown" (re-entry, new peak) No. 43, "My Strange Addiction" (debut) No. 46, "All the Good Girls Go to Hell" (debut) No. 53, "I Love You" (debut) No. 62, "Ilomilo" (debut) No. 63, "Listen Before I Go" (debut) No. 79, "8" (debut) No. 85, "Lovely," with Khalid (peaked at No. 64) No. 94, "Ocean Eyes" (re-entry; new peak)
With eight debuts on this week's Hot 100, Eilish has charted 24 songs in 2019, the most of any act. Grande ranks second with 15, followed by Juice WRLD, with 10.
As previously reported, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? debuts with the second-largest week of 2019 for an album in terms of equivalent album units, after Grande's Thank U, Next. Plus, Eilish, 17, becomes the youngest woman with a No. 1 album since Demi Lovato, who, at 16, reigned with Here We Go Again in 2009.

Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' Debuts on Country Airplay Chart, Driven by Morning Show Spins
4/9/2019 by Gary Trust
The song starts at No. 53.
As Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" roars from No. 15 to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (dated April 13), the genre-bending song also debuts on Billboard's Country Airplay chart, at No. 53.
The track, released on Sony Music's Columbia Records, enters Country Airplay with 1 million in audience, via 140 plays on 35 reporters to the chart (whose panel totals 148 stations), in the week ending April 7, according to Nielsen Music. The song had drawn five plays the week before, translating to 37,000 in audience; it, thus, logs a 2,655% gain in audience week-over-week.
Almost all plays for "Road" in the latest tracking week occurred during morning drive, thanks to syndicated plays on The Bobby Bones Show, although one station, iHeartMedia-owned WMAD Madison, Wis., played it 14 times, in various dayparts (between 6 a.m. and midnight); no other reporter gave it more than five plays in that span.
Also notably, 78 plays of the song on Country Airplay reporters occurred Friday-Sunday (April 5-7), after the arrival of its remix with Billy Ray Cyrus, released Friday, besting the 62 plays the song drew Monday-Thursday (April 1-4).
"If it's country enough for Billy Ray Cyrus, it's country enough for me," muses WMAD program director Katie Kruz, who notes that the station is playing the Cyrus remix. "The rest of the [country panel] might not be playing it, but they have it stuck in their heads as they read this.
"It's fun. It's 2019," Kruz says. "Listener response over the weekend has been positive, for the most part. We posted it on our socials and, just like anything, there are some naysayers, but most people are loving the song and telling us that they cannot get it out of their heads."
As the song enters Country Airplay, Sony Music Nashville CEO Randy Goodman tells Billboard that his team has started testing the song in some country radio markets. "It would be negligent not to look at it," he says.
In addition to the song's Country Airplay arrival, "Road" rises 36-23 (up 139% in plays) as the Greatest Gainer on the Rhythmic Songs airplay chart, which measures plays on 56 rhythmic stations, and 38-30 (up 135%) on the Pop Songs airplay chart, which is based on a panel of 167 mainstream top 40 stations.
"People are finding the song everywhere else, in all genres," Kruz says. "I'd rather they find it on my radio station."
The song's profile first swelled thanks in part to TikTok videos and other viral memes, while subsequent attention has centered on its removal after a week on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart (dated March 16). (Hot Country Songs, based on airplay, streaming and sales, requires Billboard to designate songs for inclusion based on genre fit; Country Airplay, however, as well as Rhythmic Songs and Pop Songs, purely reflects plays on reporting stations.)

Nipsey Hussle Posthumously Debuts Four Songs On Billboard Hot 100
4/10/2019 by Xander Zellner
'Racks in the Middle' starts at No. 44.
Following Nipsey Hussle's death on March 31, the rapper debuts four songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated April 13).
Three of the tracks, "Double Up," featuring Belly and Dom Kennedy, "Last Time That I Checc'd," featuring YG, and "Dedication," featuring Kendrick Lamar, are from the rapper's 2018 album Victory Lap, which re-enters the Billboard 200 at No. 2, a new peak.
The highest-debuting of the quartet is "Racks in the Middle," featuring Roddy Ricch and Hit-Boy, the last single that Hussle released during his lifetime. The song arrived on Feb. 15 and its official video dropped on Feb. 22. It enters the Hot 100 at No. 44 largely on the strength of streaming, up 508% to 16.5 million U.S. streams in the week ending April 4, according to Nielsen Music.
Prior to this week, Hussle had reached the Hot 100 with one title, for a single week, as featured on YG's "Snitches Ain't," also featuring Tyga and Snoop Dogg. The track spent a frame on the Hot 100, at No. 100, on Feb. 25, 2012.
Here is a look at all four of Hussle's songs on the new, April 13-dated Hot 100. All are debuts:
Hot 100 Rank, Title No. 44, "Racks in the Middle," feat. Roddy Ricch & Hit-Boy No. 65, "Double Up," featuring Belly & Dom Kennedy No. 82, "Last Time That I Checc'd," feat. YG No. 93, "Dedication," feat. Kendrick Lamar
Notably, Hit-Boy (real name: Chauncey Hollis, Jr.) and Dom Kennedy (real name: Dominic Hunn) both earn their first career Hot 100 entries, thanks to "Racks " and "Double Up," respectively.
Nipsey Hussle (real name: Ermias Joseph Asghedom) was fatally shot outside his Marathon Clothing store in Los Angeles on March 31. He was 33.

Victoria Monet Debuts on Emerging Artists Chart, Scores First Hot 100 Hit With Ariana Grande Collab 'Monopoly'
4/11/2019 by Xander Zellner
Plus, Simple Creatures debut, as City Girls hold at No. 1.
Victoria Monet debuts at No. 16 on Billboard's Emerging Artists chart (dated April 13), as her new single "Monopoly," with Ariana Grande, debuts at No. 70 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking her first entry on the chart as a credited artist.
The track isn't Monet's first experience with the Hot 100, though, as she co-wrote Grande's No. 1s "Thank U, Next" and "7 Rings." Monet charted one prior Billboard chart entry as an artist: Machine Gun Kelly's "A Little More," featuring Monet, hit No. 35 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs in 2015.
In less than a full week of tracking (as it was released on April 1), "Monopoly" opens with 9.4 million U.S. streams and 12,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen Music.
City Girls top the Emerging Artists chart for a second week, as the duo's singles "Act Up" and "Twerk," featuring Cardi B, rank at Nos. 47 and 83, respectively, on the Hot 100.
Elsewhere, Simple Creatures make their Billboard chart debut, entering Emerging Artists at No. 31, as the duo's debut EP Strange Love opens at No. 1 on Heatseekers Albums (2,000 copies sold). The pair consists of Blink-182 bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus and All Time Low frontman Alex Gaskarth.
Plus, NLE Choppa vaults 22-13 on Emerging Artists, hitting a new high, as the rapper's breakout single "Shotta Flow" gains by 6% to 8.4 million U.S. streams.

Short & Sweet Success: At Under 2 Minutes, Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' Is Shortest Hot 100 No. 1 Since 1965
News
By Gary Trust | April 11, 2019 11:10 AM EDT
The last quickest leader? An earworm by Herman's Hermits.
As Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" charges to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (dated April 13), the genre-bending song becomes the shortest leader on the list by song length in over 53 years.
Per Record Research's Paul Haney, "Road," at 1:53 in length (counting its original version, not its 2:37-long remix with Billy Ray Cyrus), packs the quickest punch at No. 1 since Herman's Hermits' "I'm Henry VIII, I Am," which led the list dated Aug. 7, 1965. The latter song, the British band's hooky second No. 1, sports a 1:49 runtime.
Encompassing the Hot 100's entire 60-year history, "Road" ties David Rose's 1962 No. 1 "The Stripper" as the fifth-briefest leader.
Here is a quick look at the shortest Hot 100 No. 1s by length:
Song Length, Title, Artist, Date Reached No. 1 1:38, "Stay," Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs, Nov. 21, 1960 1:49, "I'm Henry VIII, I Am," Herman's Hermits, Aug. 7, 1965 1:51, "Surrender," Elvis Presley, March 20, 1961 1:52, "He's So Fine," The Chiffons, March 30, 1963 1:53, "Old Town Road," Lil Nas X, April 13, 2019 1:53, "The Stripper," David Rose, July 7, 1962
"Road" follows a trend toward shorter hit songs in recent years. In 2017, Lil Pump's "Gucci Gang," running 2:04, became the shortest Hot 100 top 10 since 1975, while, in 2016, Piko-Taro's "PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen) made history as the shortest Hot 100 entry ever: a mere 45 seconds long. Still, the longest Hot 100 hit in terms of length also charted in 2016: David Bowie's "Blackstar," which wraps three seconds shy of 10 minutes.
