people of any color who do not construct a proper sentence implies that they don't know how to...you may very well know how to speak/write English properly, but if you so you are glorying ignorance which i find even more appalling...there is a growing anti-intellectualism in this country which has brought about the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave (not implying that you voted for him)...somehow this movie was more true than anyone would've guessed: As if the entire construct of "proper English" isn't rooted in elevating whiteness at the expense of rendering any and all cultural/ethnic/racial deviations inferior (or, yeah, white supremacy). How a harmless meme on a music forum led to glorifying ignorance is a bridge I'm not interested in crossing but I'll just count is as another example of people being bothered by black people having the audacity to express their culture in open spaces*. Have a nice life. *and any/everyone can spare me the "tHiS iSnT a RaCe tHiNg" excuse because if that was a meme of one of those white housewives making a sassy remark, people would've liked it and kept it moving.*there may be some truth to that...i've taken the Harvard Implicit Bias test & discovered that i am unconciously biased toward white people (as many are)...since i know this, it is incumbent on me to try to be proactive to counter those biases...but my protest to improper English certainly isn't racial on a concious level. I will be hosting a homeless LGBT youth (mostly likely trans youth of color) starting later this year...but regardless of their color, orientation, etc...i will not tolerate them using such language in my home.

I just read the lyrics to βWork Bitchβ & see no LGBT reference at all, only woman-on-woman misogyny also...βbitch we been knewβ - what language is that, because itβs not English The ignorance popped out The songs arenβt necessarily chosen because they speak to LGBT+ issues or people, but rather because they were adopted by queers in one way or another. Work Bitch is one of the most common phrases in gay vernacular last decade. Britney did that. I wonβt even acknowledge the language comment.

I hope you and these flash cards are just an attempt at a joke and not implying illiteracy. I put my English degree to use and confirmed that all four of these words are, in fact, part of the English language. Sorry not sorry if the way black people tend to construct sentences in an informal setting is so perplexing. people of any color who do not construct a proper sentence implies that they don't know how to...you may very well know how to speak/write English properly, but if you so you are glorying ignorance which i find even more appalling...there is a growing anti-intellectualism in this country which has brought about the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave (not implying that you voted for him)...somehow this movie was more true than anyone would've guessed: The idea that there is one βwayβ to speak a language reeks of classism and racism. Who are you, or anyone, to dictate how something as evolving as language should be spoken just because the powers that be (elite βeducatedβ white people) decided it so. Coming from a place where I spoke with a dialect and being βcorrectedβ often was often demeaning as the βcorrectorsβ often looked down upon me over it as if I was a lesser. Nope. Not going to happen and youβre not going to do this in here.

If weβre going to go with that, letβs all go back to 18th century English, which is likely closer to this idea of βproper Englishβ than any of us are capable of. If you refuse to be corrected, you have no right to try to correct anyone else. Sit. Down.

already sitting...like I said, I realize that there is a possibility of an implicit bias at play in my attitude, I would say that admitting that as a possibility indeed does mean Iβm willing to be corrected if Iβm wrong
I learned how to conjugate verbs in 3rd grade & assumed we all did, but I try to help if someone is uninformed...I correct my motherβs grammar on the rare occasions I speak with her...she has a bad habit of saying βyou wasβ
maybe I am a classist, but as Iβm willing to help people improve their class, I donβt really see anything wrong with that
after all, wouldnβt it be a much better world if we all tried to be better people...Iβm certainly willing to learn & grow

This has become a case of cultural genocide and remains a relevant issue even today, as the last of these residential schools closed in the 90s - just over 20 years ago. Language is constantly evolving and is a part of culture. That's why there are accents. Is the British accent of English the "correct" one or is the American accent? What about the Australian accent? Are Chinese immigrants who have a clear Chinese accent wrong? At what point is one's English deemed "correct" and whose decision is it? What are the boundaries between right and wrong when it comes to language? The point of my example above is that when I hear of people attempting to "correct" dialects based on geographical areas and cultures, I think of that erasure. Who are you to correct someone else's dialect? Language is a part of culture. You have no right to "correct" someone else's culture.

Wait we're really in here expressing outrage because 1) "Work Bitch" isn't a song explicitly about LGBT rights (like at least half the songs on the list) and 2) the grammar on an Internet meme wasn't "proper English"? Lolwut.

Because they are directly linked to identity. Most of us go by either "he/him" or "she/her". Some of us don't. Some of us who aren't linked to the gender binary go by "they/them", which might be confusing for those who live and die by traditional grammar rules - however, no matter how much someone says it's grammatically incorrect to refer to someone as a they, it's actually not and haven't been for as long as I can remember. Consider this: if you're speaking about someone whose identity you don't know, you refer to them as "them." For example: Becky: "Hey Chad, someone was in here asking about you earlier." Chad: "What did they want?" In this case, the "they" directly refers to the "someone." "Someone" is one person. "They" is referring to one person. Next time you see someone dunghole on Facebook saying "they" is for plural only, this is an example of when language can and should be corrected. :)

I agree about βtheyβ...I used to complain about it being plural only but then I realized that we use the word βyouβ as both singular & plural, so if you, why not they?
it does get confusing sometimes though & I like the idea of perhaps changing the plural words ... as wrong as βyousβ β βtheysβ sound, it would clear things up
As far as Canadiansβ attack of the Inuit culture, I wasnβt aware of that...US schools are pretty bad at being self-absorbed when it comes to history...maybe if we taught world history to high schoolers, those kids when they get employed at the State Dept wouldnβt make so many stupid mistakes in our foreign policy

Bowie going out this early is less surprising than some of my high losses, because "Boys Keep Swinging" is...not entirely a high point for Bowie. I think it's a lot of fun, though, and given some of the songs that have yet to be revealed, it ranks somewhere in the middle on the salt-o-meter.
Even with where I ranked "I Want to Break Free", I really wish I liked it more.
