Chris just posted a song on Facebook he’s recorded for his upcoming album called “Double Down”.

As long as he’s not producing, I’m down for it. Right now this feels like a non event! Sad!

New piano version of the song was released today: I love the lyrics of this song, but hate the production so I'm hoping that the piano version is better. I'll give it a listen today!

New piano version of the song was released today: Absolutely love this piano version and quite frankly THIS is how it should've been. This version added to the lyrics choked me up a bit. I think the lyrics are terrible lol. So ridiculously stupid vague in terms of detaillol wut? um....these lyrics seem pretty detailed to me: Still got your number in my phone And even though you don't know I listen I still call and wait 'til the tone Just to hear you saying, "Leave a message"
Since you've been gone I've had to find Different ways to grieve There's days that I don't even want it on my mind But tonight I'm weak
So, I'm gonna pull out pictures, ones with you in 'em Laugh and cry a little while reminiscing By myself I can't help That all I think about is How you were taken way too soon It ain't the same here without you I gotta say, missing you comes in waves And tonight I'm drowning
Yeah, I know you're in a better place And one day I'll see you again But it's killing me we can't be face to face I miss my best friend
I mean, just from the lines since you've been gone I've had to find/Different ways to grieve and I know you're in a better place/And one day I'll see you again, it's quite obvious what this song is about.

I did listen to it and I agree it adds to the song but I'm still left a little underwhelmed. I'm not sure that Chris Young's voice is emoting enough to make me really feel the lyrics as powerfully as it should. Also I agree that there is nothing vague or terrible about the lyrics. It is fairly simplistic in design but truly effective in describing the emotions of going through losing someone.

It's crazy to me that people can say the lyrics are poorly written, as I think it's one of the best of the year. It's tough to write a song about losing someone and keep it succinct and to the point, and close the chorus with a clever double meaning is well done. Chris Young has a recognizable voice, and to me personally, I think he sounds good on the song. The production is a bit hit or miss for me on this one, but it seems that the elements are there for a song to be remembered.
But to each their own!

I am legit getting concerned that this song is beginning to sputter and stall out as "Drowning" has gotten zero adds on Mediabase the past few weeks, and this week was rough for Chris Young on Mediabase as he has the lowest bullet of all the songs in the Top 30 being promoted at a weak 28 and he gained less than 200k on Mediabase this week.
I can imagine this song is stalling out due to the subject matter (grieving about death) and tone of the song given the current time we live in (pandemic) and country radio wanting to opt for more mid-uptempo, hopeful material (see "Be A Light", "One Margarita" really surging on the chart) during these times.

Agreed. This is an excellent song that would otherwise have no issue climbing to the top 10... it really could not have any worse timing, though. Its universal message about grieving death is almost TOO universal right now.

Looks like this song is done as "Drowning" lost 109 spins and 307k in audience today on Mediabase. I just think the pandemic and radio insisting on more positive songs pretty much doomed this one since April.
I know Lauren Alaina has two other songs on the chart, but screw it, I hope Sony goes for "Town Ain't Big Enough" for the next single to country radio.

This is absolutely the right move on Chris Young's part. For Lauren Alaina, that might mean the end of "Getting Good", but it would definitely be a net positive as "Town Ain't Big Enough" is waiting to smash (AND she actually has a significant role in the song). Who has the record for most simultaneously charting songs on Airplay?

This song was struggling long before the pandemic started. My guess is that "Drowning" would have stalled out anyway, if the pandemic never happened. I could see them releasing a third single but I wouldn't be surprised if they move on from the album after two singles and lay low for a bit.

This is pretty odd isn’t it? I feel like Raised On Country did well enough to get the album out? And gave them a lot of time to get it out too.

What album sabre14? I don't think this nor "Raised On Country" are on an album released yet. I just checked Chris Young's discography and it says the new album is titled Raised On Country but no album has been released, so they could still release "Town Ain't Big Enough" to get the album out

This one struggling the way it did still confuses me honestly because it got a big response out of the gate from consumers (enough to land in the top 20 of the HCS chart long before becoming a radio single) and sold consistently a lot better than his last few singles did from the jump, but radio just never took to it for some reason. I get that now with the COVID-19 pandemic, the timing isn't best for bumping up this one up into high rotation levels, so it being let go of at this point makes total sense, but I feel like the signs pointed to this one being a big hit for him long before that would've even been an issue. Obviously my initial thought that this would smash ended up being totally wrong, and I'm definitely disappointed as I think this is easily his best release since "Sober Saturday Night." Shame.

They need to go with something new and unheard for the next single. Unfortunately, after this flopping I’d imagine it’s going to be forgettable uptempo fodder.

I think an unheard upbeat song is what they go for as well. A single under-performing like this at radio, especially from an artist with a string of top 5 hits, usually makes a label take a step back and re-evaluate song/single/album plans. Odds are they were planning an album release with this single peaking (which "Raised On Country" would be part of) but not when "Drowning" struggles just to get to the 20's.

Wow I knew this one was struggling but I’m surprised they just let it go.
The best thing for Chris would be to get a new producer and stray back to the sound that really made him a player in the genre. I think that’s clear from the mediocre response to his last 4 singles.

Karma bit him after he called me a coward for saying his music was way better 10 years ago
