Ugh. This song is my least favorite on the album, maybe in his whole career. It’s preachy, not catchy in the least, and will be lucky to crack the Top 40. Some Nights and Old Violin were my two choices. Also, he waited WAY too long to release a second single, you need to do it right when the first single falls off.

George and his team have dropped the ball a bunch of times in the last few years. The whole “60 for 60” campaign was the start of it. Yeah let’s remind radio programmers that he’s old. “The cowboy rides away tour” confused people into thinking he was retiring and going away so radio programmers had no interest in playing his new music. All of his shows sell out anyway so there was no reason to make this a farewell tour because every ticket was going to get sold, plus he still does a lot of concerts every year. 25 shows over the last 2 years. Releasing awful songs as singles like “Drinkin Man”, “I Believe” and now this song “The weight of the badge” over obviously better song / single choices.

Rightttt “Drinking Man”, “I Believe” & “The Weight Of The Badge” were such big hits on the radio.....You’re right I was wrong. Smh

Rightttt “Drinking Man”, “I Believe” & “The Weight Of The Badge” were such big hits on the radio.....You’re right I was wrong. Smh I mean, you are correct that those were not big hits, and an argument could definitely be made that they were not among the best single choices on their respective albums. But you seem to be misinterpreting the intention of the Cowboy Rides Away tour. That tour was very specifically publicized as "George is still going to be making new music and performing odd shows, but he is retiring from formal touring". The tour was not branded as a retirement tour just to sell tickets and then be like "lol jk!", it was just him formally stepping back from the big cross-country tour lifestyle. Which he has indeed done. The fact that he performs a handful of shows in Vegas and Texas every year, or contributes to random charity concerts in Nashville or something, doesn't exactly mean that a fan like me can still see him whenever I want to. For all intents and purposes, he has disappeared from the public eye. Besides, he got old, and radio responded accordingly. It's not like if he had not gone on that tour radio would have kept playing him. Nor would he be being played right now if he had released the 2nd single in a more timely manner, or released "Some Nights" or something instead. I do agree that his team has made several questionable choices in recent years, including releasing the songs you mentioned, but the blame for his radio decline should be given to his age more than anything.

I understand what you are saying about the Cowboy rides away tour and I understood what George was saying but a lot of people were under the impression that that was going to be his last shows and some people were upset that they bought tickets from 2nd party places for tons of money only to see George announce a Vegas residence. I also agree with you about his age is most definitely the biggest factor in lack of radio play but I really do believe with the right singles like “some nights” he could get a song top 30. Trisha Yearwood has a top 25 song right now.

To me, the two biggest mistakes George's label made were (1) Waiting too long to release a follow-up single to GIAWGT, and (2) Releasing "I Believe" instead of "I Got a Car" as the follow-up single. That killed off his lifelong momentum. Having said that, I also think his "retirement from structured touring" announcement really put off country radio. They like to offer free tickets to shows to entice listeners to tune in. Knowing they wouldn't be able to give away George Strait tickets anymore probably made it easy for the stations to start ignoring him. Then again, his age can't be ignored either, even guys like Possum and Hag were ignored on country radio for the last 20 years of their lives. And today, you can listen all week and never hear a song by Alan, Toby, or George.

I think if George were able to get together with a Luke Combs or Eric Church for a collaboration song that radio picked up instantly and went to #1, followed by a lead single to the next album, it might prolong his radio life another year or two. I know his age is the reason he isn't played, but it's really more the genre moving away from George's mid-tempo type of songs that is really the crux of the issue. His voice is very comparable to what it was 10-20 years ago, and honestly his songs still sound the same (or similar). I agree the single choices have been spotty at best, but he's always left a hit song or two unreleased on his albums. He could have a double album of non-singles that would rival the quality of nearly anything released in the last 30 years.

Radio won't pick up an Eric Church song instantly. 2. I am not sure having a #1 song mainly powered by Luke Combs would make George's follow up song (assumed solo) have more hype and chart success. Just an example Cassadee Pope was featured in Think Of You (#1 airplay single) and then her own singles flopped.

George probably could’ve gotten another hit if “Some Nights” was the lead single to Honky Tonk Time Machine instead of ELHTB, but with the release of the latter and this current single, it’s pretty evident that George is done playing the radio game.

Weight of the Badge stays at #52 for a second straight week, loses its bullet, and sheds 0.14M audience. After only 4 weeks on the chart, it looks like it's done.

Many songs lose their bullet that low on the Billboard chart. The low total audience numbers makes it more routine. I don't think George's song will do much but that doesn't indicate it's done.

The fact I thought this thread was being bumped for no reason only for the new information to be posted in it to be extremely valid and relevant to the thread lmao.

Today is National first responders day so now it kinda makes sense. Still a little strange because I was hoping we’d be getting some new music from him soon.

And of course George wasn’t in the video for even a second.

IHeart radio stations played “Weight of the Badge” every other hour on National First Responders Day. That accounts for the majority of the airplay.

Did not re-enter Billboard's Country Airplay chart.

Good. This re-entering would've been annoying.
