new song "LUCID" out now, produced by BloodPop. more generic than almost everything on her album. not bad, but nothing exciting either.

I have this on repeat with the new Little Mix song. It is reminiscent of Rain On Me....because....same producer! But I like this. It is weird that she does sound a bit like Gaga and Ariana on the “lucid dreams bout you” line.

Yay! I love her so much. Imagine debuting with such a strong debut EP and debut album, ahead-of-her-time queen!
And she's so sweet, talented, and progressive ugh - and she has beauty AND brains. Poor everyone else tbh.

I like it. Sounds like it'll be a grower.
Excited for her next album!

The ringing synth sounds in "This Hell" make me think of "Beat It" by MJ. Otherwise, it's very GaGa-BTW era.

I love the new song. I was at her last concert in NYC and am now wishing she performed this instead of teasing it (the new song we got instead was… not what I wanted lol)

It's a good album but no where near as good as SAWAYAMA. The highlights for me are "Catch Me In The Air", "Holy (Til You Let Me Go)", "Phantom", "This Hell" and "Frankenstein".

This is WAY too compressed. Her vocals get drowned out by the production a lot. When you can hear her clearly, like on some of Forgiveness, Phantom, To Be Alive, and Send My Love To John, she sounds exquisite. I kinda get a Eurovision vibe from some songs and rather than sounding futuristic, they sound dated and a little gauche at times, but overall, the album has its place in my collection, for sure. It's definitely more cohesive than Sawayama. I think I like the fact that the album gets stronger as it progresses, but it takes a little too long to get to its sweet spot. The first four songs are beneath her. Oh, the booklet is beautiful. I wish there were even more pictures. I give it a B+.
Top Tier: Phantom (This is her best song. Nostalgia in the absolute best way. This is a song I would have eaten up as a child and it brings me back to that place) Hurricanes Frankenstein (FLAWLESS) Imagining (Let's GOOOO! Now, THAT's what I'm talking about!) Your Age (This kinda reminds me of Sawayama, but more polished. I would die if I heard this live.) Forgiveness Send My Love To John (what kind of American Life vibe?! Also, she sounds BEAUTIFUL I dig the message, too.) To Be Alive
Mid: Holy Catch Me In The Air Hold The Girl Minor Feeliings
Finland Bonus Track: This Hell (Aptly named. She is better than this and doesn't sell it, either.)

This Hell Forgiveness Your Age Imagining Frankenstein Hurricanes Send My Love to John Phantom
These are the ones that stuck with me most. XS was very much her bombastic Pop girlie moment and this feels like an intentional 180° to make sure she’s also taken seriously as a songwriter and artiste (to her detriment a bit if we’re honest since it tends to verge on generic at points). All the musical references she’s pulling from at once definitely induces some whiplash (she literally named Bon Jovi, Shania Twain, Gwen Stefani, Nine Inch Nails, The Cardigans, The Killers, Aerosmith and Madonna as direct influences through her Apple Music track by track guide), and the production feels dated at times (ironically more than intentionally) but it’s cohesive and not a sophomore slump; just a different shade of Rina. Solid B.

I take back what I said about Minor Feelings and put it at the top of the mid pile. Also, the only song I feel truly beneath her is This Hell and even that has grown on me as a disposable, cute bop. Rina is a winna!

Am I alone in thinking the album cover is terrible? It's frustrating, because the visuals for the singles were so appealing, and she looked so gorgeous in them while still maintaining that artsy-girl, conceptual aesthetic. But what the fuck is this blobby latex ball shit? Also, the super-long, attenuated fingernails? What? Why? Ew?
If this album were Bjork-esque experimental artpop, I would totally get going with a weird and out-there cover. But it's not Bjork. It's actually way more accessible and pop than SAWAYAMA. She should've gone with one of the more glamorous, dynamic shots, like the one used for the 'This Hell' single cover. That photo is gorg!

I've listened through the album twice and I like it but don't LOVE it yet, the way I do with Sawayama. Some of the songs sound like mid-to-late 00s Hot AC light rock (Daughtry, Keane, Kings of Leon, etc.) which isn't necessarily bad but it feels odd given her catalog. I even hear influences from the Michelle Branch/Vanessa Carlton singer-songwriter vein. The dance numbers switch between GaGa-inspired to early 2000s electronic music which I enjoy but it feels a bit reductive. I agree with SHOOTER and Period Dot that it's more generic and faceless than her previous album and EP. That said, the lyrics are personal and intense once again and I enjoy the genre fusion and hopping, but it is a little disappointing. The songs which I find most true to her artistic progression so far are "Minor Feelings," "Hold The Girl," "Phantom," and "To Be Alive." Maybe "Send My Love to John" Sidenote: "Send My Love to John" is very similar to Madonna's "X-Static Process" from American Life, just taken down a few keys.
