matchbox twenty is another one. "Bent" was their biggest chart hit (#1 on the Hot 100), yet nowhere near their most remembered song. "Push" is their most streamed on Spotify, and "3AM" is their most watched on YT. "Bent" isn't even in their top 3 on either platform. 3AM is their most well known song.

Aerosmith's biggest hit chartwise, and only #1, is "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" (1998). But is it their best known song? I don't think so. More likely "Dream On", "Walk This Way", "Sweet Emotion", or maybe one of their late 80s/early 90s hits.
Pearl Jam: ask what their biggest or best known song is and you could get a lot of answers, such as "Alive", "Evenflow", "Jeremy", "Daughter", or "Better Man". But I doubt anyone would cite the flukey cover hit "Last Kiss", though that's what the Hot 100 and CHR chart numbers say.
Phil Collins (solo): "In the Air Tonight" may be his best known song today, but it only peaked at #19 originally in contrast to his several #1's (though of those "Sussudio", in particular, gets replayed a lot.)
Duran Duran have a lot of songs that get replayed, but the best known now are probably "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Rio", neither of which are their highest charting hits ("The Reflex", "A View to a Kill", and at CHR "Ordinary World" were their #1s.)
Bruce Springsteen's biggest chart single is "Dancing In the Dark", but while not forgotten I don't think it's his one best known/remembered song overall.

I Don't Want to Miss a Thing is definitely their most well known song: it's one of the few 70s songs to have 500+M streams on Spotify, it's their most viewed song on YouTube, it's a karaoke staple so much so that even Gen Z knows that song, it's their biggest and more iconic I'd say

Dream On is their most played song on Classic Rock stations and Oldies stations.

"IDWTMAT" has about 100 million more Spotify streams than "Dream On." It also has way more YouTube streams, even accounting for various unofficial videos (the main "IDWTMAT" video has 388 million views and then a random lyric video has over 200 million views).

Dream on has been our since 1973.It is well known among Rock music fans that Dream on is Aerosmith's most well known song. The younger crowd or pop fans will probably pick I Dont Wanna Miss a Thing.

Celine with "My Heart Will Go On". Definitely her signature song, but its chart performance isn't as strong as a few of her other #1s ("Because You Loved Me", "The Power Of Love", "I'm Your Angel" etc). Might have been due to restricting physical singles. Wonder how many weeks it would have gotten at #1 had they not done that.

Monica, I would say So Gone is her most well known song which peaked at 10 while she had other songs that went to 1 and had better chart runs (The Boy Is Mine, Angel of Mine, Don't Take It Personal).

I think Sisqo is also a good example for this thread... “Thong Song” is definitely his signature song even though it peaked at #03, while “Incomplete” was a #01 song

"Most well known", "signature song" etc. gets different answers depending on who you ask.
Anyway
On Sisqo. Thong Song got to #3 as a radio-only hit - no sales. After Thong Song peaked at radio (7 weeks at #1) it was finally released as the B-song to the 'Incomplete' CD single. 'Incomplete' shot to #1 probably because of that.

Maybe Billy Joel, who has enough hits that it’s hard to narrow it down to just one signature song. But “Piano Man”, “Movin’ Out”, “My Life”, “You May Be Right”, and “ Uptown Girl” all seem like good contenders, but none hit #1 chartwise. (Though the three that did aren’t forgotten themselves.)
Don Henley solo: “Dirty Laundry” charted highest, but best known are likely “The Boys of Summer” and “The End of the Innocence”.
Gloria Estefan/Miami Sound Machine has three #1s, none of which is “Conga”, “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You”, or “Get On Your Feet”, which are probably her/their best known now.
Kenny Rogers’ biggest chart hit is “Lady”, but best known are probably “The Gambler”, and maybe “Lucille”. Though one could make a case for the Dolly Parton duet “Islands In the Stream”, which was #1 pop and country.
Led Zeppelin are an interesting case: their biggest chart single is “Whole Lotta Love” (#4) but most would regard “Stairway to Heaven” as their signature song. But STH never charted pop at all because it was never released as a commercial single; who knows how it would have charted if it were?
And Bob Marley’s only Hot 100 charted single at least in his lifetime was “Roots, Rock, Reggae”, but it didn’t even turn up on his “Legend” compilation. Suffice to say probably nobody considers it his best known song.
And speaking of Bob Marley, Eric Clapton’s only #1 hit was his cover of “I Shot the Sheriff”. But “Lay Down Sally”, “Wonderful Tonight”, and “Tears In Heaven” are probably better known from Clapton now, not to mention the Yardbirds, Cream, and Derek & the Dominoes (I.e. “Layla”) songs.

Yeah "Piano Man" could be seen as his most known song, or even "We Didn't Start the Fire." I think for someone like him, he has a lot of known songs so it's hard to say his most known. "Piano Man" is his most streamed song on Spotify. I'm a bit surprised "Uptown Girl" is his next most streamed song. "We Didn't Start the Fire" is third. "Piano Man" also has his most YT views, and "Uptown Girl" is second there as well. "We Didn't Start the Fire" is third. So, that top 3 seems consistent for him.

I'm a bit surprised that "We Didn't Start the Fire" has held up so well, or at least has apparently remained lastingly popular. While it's one of his three Hot 100 #1's ("It's Still Rock'n'Roll To Me" and "Tell Her About It" are the others), it's been much criticized in the years since. Personally, I've always liked it, being the history buff that I am, but it's often been dismissed in retrospect even by Billy himself who has called it basically a novelty hit.

-One Direction. Who the hell immediately think of Best Song Ever when they’re mentioned? -I don’t think any of Maroon 5’s #1 songs have the staying power of This Love. -Beautiful was way bigger than any of Christina’s #1 hits, aside from maybe Genie in a Bottle -Ditto with Kelly Clarkson and Since U Been Gone. -Before He Cheats was huge. Carrie’s #1-debuting Idol coronation song wasn’t. -Seven Nation Army is far far far better known than Icky Thump. -Europe had one top 5 hit and it wasn’t The Final Countdown. -Taio Cruz’s only #1 hit was Break Your Heart, not Dynamite. -Chuck Berry’s only #1 hit was not Johnny B. Goode. -I’ll Be There For You charted below Just The Way It Is Baby because the former was not released as a single late into its run. -Imagine only hit #3.

Far more people remember The Romantics' "What I Like About You" than "Talking in Your Sleep" even as the latter peaked at #3 compared to #49 Kiss' "Beth" peaked at #7, yet it's far less remembered than "Rock and Roll all Night" which peaked at #12 "More than a Feeling" is Boston's most well known song, but it peaked at #5, while "Amanda" peaked at #1 "Jar of Hearts" by Christina Perri peaked at #17, yet she's more well known for "A Thousand Years", even as it only peaked at #31. On the topic of Breaking Dawn, A Thousand Years is far better remembered than It Will Rain (#3), which is probably Bruno’s least remembered big hit. Mary J Blige- Family Affair peaked at #1 but people mostly remember "Be Without You" Mariah Carey- We Belong Together is her biggest song but AIWFCIY is her most well known song Taylor Dayne- Love Will Lead You Back is her biggest but Tell It To My Heart is her most well known Avril Lavinge-Girlfriend #1 but Complicated #2 is her most well known Pointer Sisters- Slow Hand #2 is their biggest but I'm So Exicted (#9) is their most well known Destiny's Child-Independent Women is their biggest but Say My Name is better well known Madonna's biggest hit is Like A Virgin domestically and Like A Prayer internationally but taking into consideration all generations "Material Girl" is the better known song Lady Gaga Poker Face is her biggest but Just Dance and her recent #1 seem to be more known than Poker Face Paula Abdul- Rush Rush is her biggest hit but Straight Up seems to be more well known. Poker Face is definitely the best remembered or Gaga’s #1 hits; Bad Romance seems to be its main rival here. Disagree on Madonna and Mary J.

Solo work only: Stevie Nicks' biggest hit is Talk to Me, while I assume most would consider her most well known song is Edge of Seventeen.

Sir Elton John's biggest hit is the 14-week No.1 double A side single "Candle in the Wind 1997"/"Something About the Way You Look Tonight" but his signature song is "Your Song" which spent four weeks at its No.8 peak position in 1971 and has been covered by many artists.

Must be me then, I don't remember ever hearing it on the radio or seeing the video on MTV/VH1 when it was a hit but I definitely remember Fergalicious, Glamorous, Clumsy and even London Bridge. Maybe it was because I was 8 at the time but I do remember the other big hits in 2007 but I don't ever remember this being a hit, which is a shame because it's by far her best hit. London Bridge I dont remember and Fergalicous I vaguely remember. People have forgotten about Clumsy although I remember when it was on the radio every 5 minutes in early 2008. Glamorous is known for the "if you ain't got no money" part. But I'm shocked that you dont remember BGDC. I was 5 at the time and I remember the summer of '07 when MTV/VH1 would play the video every day and I remember when that song was ALWAYS on the radio. They literally played that song every hour on the hour.

I'd consider "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" as her biggest solo hit; technically it's perhaps not solo as it's a collaboration with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but it does come from her solo album "Bella Donna", as does "Edge of Seventeen". (I define solo Stevie as anything outside Fleetwood Mac.)

"biggest hit" and "most well known" can mean the same thing
If you don't define "biggest hit" as chart performance in its initial chart run, I would say any song that stands the test of time and evolves into the 'most well known' for that artist then that would become their biggest hit as well
Lots of example of songs that started out slow chart-wise but got picked up in covers, movies, tv shows etc. and have become the biggest hit of the artist by virtue of becoming most well known.

Last Kiss by Pearl Jam peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 and is their highest peaking hit but its not their most well known song, you can arguably say that Better Man or Jeremy is Pearl Jam's most well known song.
