2022 is on track to set the record for most AAA #1s in a year. Midway through March we're welcoming our eighth chart-topper as Portugal. The Man's "What, Me Worry?" overtakes Mitski after one week. This is Portugal. The Man's third AAA #1, following 2017's "Feel It Still" and 2018's "Live in the Moment."

The Head and the Heart move to the head of the class with their fourth AAA #1 for “Virginia (Wind in the Night).” This is their first #1 since 2019’s “Missed Connection.” They also topped the chart in 2016, with “All We Ever Knew,” and 2011, with “Lost in My Mind.”
This is the ninth #1 of 2022

The Black Keys may be the closest thing AAA has to a sure hit band these days. They grab their seventh #1 on the AAA charts with "Wild Child." This follows last year's "Crawling Kingsnake," 2019's "Go" and "Lo/Hi," 2014's "Fever" and "Gotta Get Away" and 2011's "Lonely Boy."
We've already hit the 10th #1 of the year, and it's only April. Unless a major hit parks itself at the top of the chart for a month or so, we may easily break the record for most #1s in a single year.

The Black Keys had a good run at #1, but Florence and the Machine take over with "My Love." This is their sixth #1, and their first since 2018's "Hunger." They also topped the chart twice in 2015 ("Ship to Wreck" and "What Kind of Man"), in 2012 ("Shake it Out") and 2011 ("Dog Days Are Over").
This is the 11th #1 of the year.

Caamp pick up their third Billboard AAA #1 with "Believe." Their previous chart toppers are 2020's "Officer of Love" and 2019's "Peach Fuzz."

Maggie Rogers moves into the top spot with "That's Where I Am." This is her third AAA #1 on Billboard following "Light On" (2019) and "Love You For a Long Time" (2020).
This is also the 13th AAA #1 on Billboard for 2022, which already ties the number of chart toppers from 2021. This chart is on target to smash the record for most #1s in a year (18 in 2020).

After only one week, Maggie Rogers cedes the Billboard AAA throne to Arcade Fire's "Unconditional I (Lookout Kid)." This is only Arcade Fire's second AAA #1, having also secured the top spot in 2017 with "Everything Now."
This is now the 14th Billboard AAA #1 in 2022, surpassing 2021's number of unique chart toppers.

Jack Johnson becomes the 15th artist to get a Billboard AAA #1 this year, with "One Step Ahead" taking its turn at the top. This is Jack Johnson's 11th #1 hit on the AAA chart, putting him into a tie for third all-time with Dave Matthews. This is his first #1 since 2020's "Don't Let Me Down." Jack's full history of #1s dates back to 2002: - "Flake" - 2002
- "The Horizon Has Been Defeated" - 2003
- "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing" - 2005
- "Good People" - 2005
- "Upside Down" - 2006
- "If I Had Eyes" - 2008
- "You And Your Heart" - 2010
- "At or With Me" - 2010
- "I Got You" - 2013
- "Don't Let Me Down" - 2020 (featured on Milky Chance's track)
- "One Step Ahead" - 2022

And we have yet another AAA #1. Grabbing the 16th chart topper of the year is Phoenix with "Alpha Zulu." This is Phoenix's second AAA #1 following "Identical" in 2020.

Clocking in for the year's 17th Billboard AAA #1 is Death Cab for Cutie with "Here to Forever." This is Death Cab's seventh #1, and their first since 2019's "Northern Lights." Their chart-topping history goes back to 2005: - "Soul Meets Body" (2005)
- "I Will Possess Your Heart" (2008)
- "You Are a Tourist" (2011)
- "Black Sun" (2015)
- "Gold Rush" (2018)
- "Northern Lights" (2019)
- "Here to Forever" (2022)

After an eight week run, Death Cab cedes the top spot to The Killers, as "Boy" takes over the top spot. Surprisingly, this is only The Killers' third Billboard AAA #1 following "Read My Mind" (2007) and "The Man" (2017).
This is the 18th #1 of 2022, tying 2020 for most #1 songs in a year. Unless "Boy" goes on a 12-week run, we will likely set a new record this year.

I expected The Killers to hold the top of the AAA Billboard chart for more than one week, but they've already been knocked off by Rosa Linn's "Snap." This is Rosa Linn's first Billboard AAA #1. For that matter, it's her debut song on all charts (she's also hit the Hot 100 back in September, so this is a pop crossover as well).
"Snap" marks the 19th unique AAA #1 of 2022, setting a new record for most top hits since the chart debuted in 1996.

As we enter the final month of 2022, Phoenix (with their buddy Ezra Koenig) knock off Rosa Linn with "Tonight." This is Phoenix's third Billboard AAA #1, following "Identical" (2020) and "Alpha Zulu" (2022). This is also Ezra Koenig's third chart topper counting his work as the lead singer of Vampire Weekend ("Harmony Hall" and "This Life" in 2019).
"Tonight" is the 20th AAA #1 of the year. With only three more charts in the calendar year, we'll see if they hold the line until 2023 or if someone else claims another crown.

We've come to the end of another calendar year, and this was a wild one for Billboard's AAA. I think we're still waiting to see if the Luminate/BDS changes will have a major impact on the chart, especially since Billboard has been able to chart some of the more indie artists this year faster than Mediabase due to more noncomm AAAs being on the Billboard panel.
2022 had 20 different number ones, which set the record for most chart toppers in a single year (surpassing the 18 #1s seen in 2020). The fewest #1s remains 2000 with six.
Five artists had their debut AAA #1 in 2022: Band of Horses, COIN, Alt-J, Mitski, and Rosa Linn. The most successful chart topper this year is Jack Johnson, who notched his 11th AAA #1 in July. This was his first since 2020, when he was a feature with Milky Chance, and his first lead/solo topper since 2013.
Phoenix was the only artist to secure more than one #1, winning the title twice with "Alpha Zulu" and "Tonight" (and if I scanned my history correctly, this is the first artist to score two #1s in the same calendar year since The Black Keys in 2019).
Thanks for following along! Here's to another year of discovering great music.

It took a few weeks, but Phoenix's seven-week run at the top is over, and the first Billboard AAA #1 of 2023 is TALK's "Run Away to Mars." This is not only TALK's first AAA #1, but it is their first charter of any kind.

Move over, TALK, White Reaper is taking over the top spot of the Billboard AAA Chart with "Pages." This is also White Reaper's first BB AAA #1. They previously peaked in the top 10 with "Might Be Right" in 2019.
This is the second #1 of 2023.

Death Cab for Cutie grabs their eighth Billboard AAA #1 with "Pepper." They also hit #1 in this album era last year with "Here to Forever." DCFC's history with AAA goes back to 2005. Their history: - "Soul Meets Body" (2005)
- "I Will Possess Your Heart" (2008)
- "You Are a Tourist" (2011)
- "Black Sun" (2015)
- "Gold Rush" (2018)
- "Northern Lights" (2019)
- "Here to Forever" (2022)
- "Pepper" (2023)
This is the third #1 for 2023.

The Billboard AAA charts have been much slower on #1 changes this year than last, but we're welcoming our fifth chart-topper of 2023. The Revivalists capture the crown with "Kid." This is their third Billboard AAA #1, following "Wish I Knew You" (2016) and "All My Friends" (2018).
On a side note, it will be interesting to see if the recent panel shake ups cause more or less volatility at the top. Only time will tell.

This is the sixth #1 on the chart for 2023.

How’d you get this pinned to stay on the first page? My Alternative #1’s and Mainstream Rock #1’s I always have to search for when there’s a new #1.

Jenny Lewis ends boygenius' seven-week run on the Billboard AAA with her first chart-topper, "Psychos." She has only had four songs chart on AAA, and this is her second top 10, following "Red Bull and Hennessy," which peaked at #10 in 2019.
"Psychos" is the eighth Billboard AAA #1 of the year.

The first chart of August finds us welcoming a new song to the top of the Billboard AAA Chart. Beck and Phoenix have teamed up for the ninth Billboard AAA #1 of the year with "Odyssey."
This is Beck's fifth Billboard AAA #1, and his first since 2019. His previous chart toppers are "Blue Moon (2014)," "Dreams (2015)," "Up All Night (2017)," and "Uneventful Days (2019)."
Phoenix earns their fourth Billboard AAA #1, but they have had more recent success. They topped the chart twice in 2022 ("Alpha Zulu" and "Tonight") and once in 2020 ("Identical").

This is the 11th number 1 of 2023.
