and there you have it. Our bottom 3 is now revealed! I believe this is the 2nd rankdown this song has appeared in, as it was featured earlier this year in one of my Shuffle rankdowns where it got 4th place! It fails to reach those heights here as this album has proven to be just too strong for this song!
Tomorrow night I will reveal the next two to go. There are only 3 non-singles remaining, will we see 2 of them go or will we see a single leave us already?

THYKIL has a stunning vocal and the melody is still pretty solid, but it's easily the one song on the album that to me feels most like an A- or an A instead of an A+. Rather surprised and sad to see it sneak ahead of "Love Ain't Worth Making."

Wasn't "Love Ain't Worth Making" my last place?
Edit: Oh it was "That's How You Know It's Love" Lmao I knew it was one of them love songs!
But no, I really loved "Love Ain't Worth Making"! Meanwhile "That's How You Know It's Love" was very weak in comparison to the rest of the album. Indulge summed it up perfectly as the one A- track among a bunch of A+s.

Both of the previous two reveals are a perfect example as to why I love to revisit this album more in the fall/winter months than I do any other time of the year. Love both of them of course, but moreso "Love Ain't Worth Making" as everything about it from her stunning vocal to the production just makes for a great song all around. Nonetheless, I expected both of these to be out at or near the bottom 3.

I don't dislike anything on this album, it really is probably the strongest debut album we have ever seen in Country music. That said, "Love Ain't Worth Making" is the one I don't revisit on purpose.

Phew. I was kinda hoping that the title track would leave at about this point, but I am kinda surprised it did. This is for sure a fun song for what it is, but it is by no means one that I feel inclined to revisit much.

This is a really fun song with classic Deana personality but I still can’t believe it was a single!! “I’ve Loved Enough to Know” and “Before We Ever Heard Goodbye” we’re #1s waiting to happen!!

Everything inside the top 7 is just fantastic, so we're at the point where every reveal is going to hurt a bit lol. This has always been one of my favorites from the album and one that I would put on repeat for sure.

I actually agree with this. I think that had they released either of those songs I think that Deana's second album would have fared a little better. I think "Did I Shave My Legs For This?" actually ruined her momentum at radio so when "Absence Of The Heart" came out it was more of a battle to get it played. Though I do think that song was also too slow to start off the next album.

Absolutely loved this song

I can only think that since this was the albums seventh single the label may not have been all that invested in another one anyways. That said, I do agree though that "I've Loved Enough to Know" would've made much more sense as a single over the title track. Also, I don't think its release necessarily hurt her momentum as that had more to do with whatever issues were going on between her and the label (I can't quite remember what happened). That in turn led to almost a full year passing before a lead single would be released from her sophomore album.

It is too bad because I do think had the label really supported her she could have had more hits. I'll be back tomorrow night with the next two, so be prepared to see what misses the top 5, plus what kicks off the top 5!

Yea, I was just trying to find some articles that would help to shed more light on whatever issues there were between her and Capitol. Here's a snippet from one: Anyways, it sounds like her and the label were butting heads over the direction of the next album which explains why it took so long to get released. Because of that, I think her sophomore album was almost doomed from the start as I'm sure the label didn't invest a whole lot into it as they knew she was likely parting ways with them.

]Me too. Wasn’t it a decent sized hit? I figured it would have been a fan favourite. I never cared much for it tho. It made it to the top 25 on the country charts, but that looks less than impressive in comparison to the albums other singles which all landed inside the top 5. I'm sure Deana was likely wanting for this to be a single, but I still wish they had went with something like "I've Loved Enough to Know".

Yeah I definitely agree with the consensus regarding "Did I Shave My Legs For This". This song has such an iconic signature personality, that has honestly in a lot of ways become even more popular than the song itself (I imagine most people have heard of the expression "Did I shave my legs for this?" even if they don't even know who Deana Carter is, lmao), but because of that personality it almost feels like a niche listen. I wouldn't go as far as to say a novelty track, but definitely a bit niche, and one that I cannot listen to on repeat the way that I can for all the other hits on this album. The melody also starts to get a tad repetitive as well despite the song's initial cleverness, which holds it back quite a bit imo.

It was supposed to be her first single and does have a video, but they pivoted last minute to "Strawberry Wine" and the rest is history.

Deana Carter has gone on record before to say that her label HATED her second album. She turned it into them and they played it front-to-back and basically were like 'we don't know what to do with this because there's no hits' and I love Deana but they weren't totally wrong. She was never someone who wanted to "play by the rules" so to speak, so she basically fought with the label and they put it out anyway, let it flop, fought with her some more for another year or two and shelved what would've been her third album before letting her go. It was still a solid album imo, but it was a big step down from the magic of her debut record, and if she had made another album that was in that vein, I think she would've had continued success. I don't blame "Did I Shave?" missing top 20 on the country charts with any of her career fumbles honestly. It actually charted on the Hot 100 at the time -- which wasn't common for even big hits at the time -- and had a memorable video (and song title), even though it wasn't on paper as big as "Count Me In" or "How Do I Get There." It also wasn't uncommon in the 90s for even big country stars to occasionally have a single that didn't hit big near the end of an era and they'd bounce back easily with new music like nothing happened.
I do always wonder why they felt like "I've Loved Enough to Know" was strong enough to be the lead-off but then never cycled back around to it later on in the era after they decided (rightfully so) to release "Strawberry Wine" instead. I think it would've been a #1 hit like "How Do We Get There," and it's the better song of the two imo.

I love the album but do agree with you, it didn't have the same "magic." That said, they fumbled the first two singles so badly. "Absence of the Heart" is wonderful, but not a single, let alone a lead and "You Still Shake Me" is...a song she recorded. 'People Miss Planes', though outdated nowadays, is a beautiful song and would have smashed in 1998 (IMO), and "Angels Working Overtime" ALWAYS sounded like a hit to me, it just followed two flops at the time. I don't even know that she wouldn't have had success with "Michaelangelo Sky" or "Ruby Brown." But, your point is on the nose...she should have just pacified the label and threw a surefire lead single on there lol.

How do you predict this rankdowns will end? How do you hope it ends? The perfect top five - and top four (I ranked count me out number four. I forget what my number five was). I’m prepared to be disappointed that my number one will go sooner than later - but it is probably my favourite country song of all time and the actual reason I submitted to this rankdown so I’ll cross my fingers anyway.
