This is alternative's answer to Sunscreen. The man speaking is none other than comedian Greg Giraldo.
I think this is going to be huge. It's already getting huge play on K-Rock NY.

I like this, but it doesn't flow very well. Greg Giraldo is funny, great lyrics, but his voice doesn't match up well with the beat.
I don't think this will do nearly as well as the Sunscreen song, which, as I recall, actually charted on Alternative, so it's hard to say this is Alternative's answer to the Sunscreen song.

Just heard this for the first time tonight, and didn't know what the hell it was until the very last bit of dialogue. I found it more depressing and disturbing than funny.

www2.allaccess.com/sounds/lazyunde.ramThere is no grey area on this song. I displayed the song/video for people to listen to on another message board and most of them either hated it or loved it.

The spoken word in this song is so on the money, it hurts.
I was laughing hysterically through the entire thing, but it is a pretty accurate picture of America right now.

Wow...
I like the song, but that video was absolutely terrible. It was kinda neat to have the homeless people singing along to the chorus, but all the other clip selections seemed like they had no human/artistic judgement go into them whatsoever. Pretty lame...

It certainly is an unusual song. Will radio stations censor the term 'hard-on.'

I wonder if there's a company that really has an underwear goes inside the pants policy in their books?

Well, first of all, this is a blatant ripoff of the Sunscreen song. Actually, I should say "song", because it only barely qualifies as one. Second, this Giraldo guy should probably stick to being a comedian. He's got some funny bits in here, but when he tries to become a social activist, it just sounds stupid. Like when he says "America is the richest country in the world, but the minimum wage is still lower than it was 35 years ago." Talk about misleading. I know he's referring to the wage rate after inflation, but he makes it sound like America is driving millions of people into homelessness when that's not the case at all. And his case for legalizing marijuana because "it's a natural plant" is weak. Cocaine grows naturally, too. Should we legalize that? He brings up Viagra as something that isn't as good as marijuana. It's a prescription drug that has no harmful effects. Does he really not see the difference here? So I'm kind of in the middle on the song. I find myself laughing one minute and ::)ing the next. Oh, and I listened to this while in the drive-thru at Wendy's. Take that, Giraldo.

Am I the only one here that gets reminded of the good ol' days of Denis Leary when listening to this guy?
BTW, I think Matt is totally overreacting about this song. It seems to me like he didn't really get that those contradictions are actually the point of the song.
As for the claims that this sounds like a blatant ripoff of "Sunscreen"... well, most bands at today's Alternative radio sound like blatant ripoffs of something past. Do we really need to go that way? Because this would give an endless amount of talk, no doubt.

Did Greg Giraldo tell you that directly or something? I don't see why that has to be the case at all. I think the track is annoying. It tries hard to shock when it's pretty much run-of-the-mill stuff. At least "Sunscreen" was well produced.

This is getting play.......on Z100 :o And WSNX, and WXXX, and WSPK... wow... could this be a minor out-of-left-field pop hit? #104 at Pop right now, and I don't think it's gone for adds at the format.

I'm guessing that Pop stations are seeing this as potentially "Sunscreen" all over again and are thus playing it. (Except that that only scraped the Top 20 and then fell like a brick. )

I don't care much for this. It's too cynical and tries too hard. I tend to agree with Matt on this one.

Oh, I live for cynical humor. There are still parts of this that have me rolling everytime I hear it...not just the content, but his delivery. I don't know how much longer a song that's merely a standup routine layered next to a simple chill backdrop, but it's gotten the job done so far.

I feared this song would be a disaster from the beginning after the horrible marijuana/viagra comparison. It was. The best I can give it is that the title is right & a few lines made me half-@$$edly smile, but for the most part it's not even funny or clever, it's just generic pretentious idealist griping about how America sucks.
D-
EDIT: Oh wait, I finally realized what exactly bothers me so much. The wording and delivery is exactly like what you'd get at one of those high school cool-kid-wannabe's poetry slams.

The wording and delivery is exactly like what you'd get at one of those high school cool-kid-wannabe's poetry slams. Lol, you speak like we've all been to one. For me, the invalidity of the marijuana/viagra thing triggered the idea that we shouldn't take any of this seriously, which cancels out anything that would otherwise be pretentious. Only thing pretentious I see is that the very first line he says is "Why is marijuana not legal?", of which I can't say I'm a very big fan.

This will be #46 on this week's chart.
I guess now it would mean something to check "Sunscreen" 's peak on Alternative...
