Thank you Gary: Morgan Wallen Makes History as First Artist With Three Songs in Country Airplay Top 10 "Last Night" leaps to No. 8, in between "Thought You Should Know" at No. 7 and "One Thing at a Time" at No. 9.
BY JIM ASKERMMorgan Wallen places three titles inside the top 10 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated April 29) – becoming the first artist to achieve the feat since the survey began in January 1990. The 29-year-old Sneedville, Tenn., native earns his 10th Country Airplay top 10 as “Last Night,” on Mercury/Republic/Big Loud Records, jumps from No. 13 to No. 8. It rose by 21% to 19.4 million audience impressions in the week ending April 20, according to Luminate. The song leapfrogs Wallen’s “One Thing at a Time,” up 10-9 for a new high (17.9 million, up 3%), while “Thought You Should Know” dips 5-7 (21.7 million, down 5%). The latter gave Wallen his eighth Country Airplay leader when it began a three-week reign in February. Concurrently, “Last Night,” which is being promoted to pop and adult radio, climbs to No. 16 on Pop Airplay, No. 19 on Adult Pop Airplay and No. 26 on Adult Contemporary. It claimed a third week atop the all-genre, streaming, airplay and sales-based Billboard Hot 100 dated April 22. All three Wallen hits are on his 36-track LP One Thing at a Time, which has led Top Country Albums and the all-genre Billboard 200 for its first six weeks. Wallen’s triple in the Country Airplay top 10 follows pop radio’s increasing willingness to play multiple hits by a single artist simultaneously. In May 2021, Ariana Grande became the first act to log three top 10s at once on Pop Airplay; Doja Cat and Harry Styles have since earned the honor, while Miley Cyrus currently has three songs on the latest list from her new album, Endless Summer Vacation: “Jaded” debuts at No. 39, as “Flowers” tallies a ninth week at No. 1 and “River” ranks at No. 25. “I’m excited to see radio continuing to invest in [country’s] core artists,” Big Loud vp of promotion Ali Matkosky recently told Billboard. “In a time where listeners are pointing out daily what they want to hear [via streaming services], it makes more and more sense to lean into that data.” ‘Rock’ on a RollBailey Zimmerman notches a fifth week atop Country Airplay, as “Rock and a Hard Place” holds at the apex (32 million, down 6%). The song first led the list dated April 1, giving Zimmerman his second straight career-opening chart-topper, following “Fall in Love,” which ruled for one week in December. Meanwhile, Zimmerman’s latest single, “Religiously,” pushes 56-50 (1.3 million, up 33%).

With how fast this song is moving on Billboard as "Last Night" is at #5 after going for adds officially a little over a month ago, especially and how young it is for radio, it's a matter of how many songs this is blocking from #1 on Billboard (probably both Tyler Hubbard and Corey Kent are in some hot water to get the Billboard #1).
This song is just absolutely massive on all scales (#2 on the Hot 100) and evident by it breezing past "One Thing At A Time" the song that was meant for country radio this song is gonna have a lot of longevity on the charts.

What if Morgan blocks himself from being # 1? Has it ever happened before with other acts ?. It’d be funny (not really tbh) to see OTAAT being blocked by Last Night

I heard this in a fast food restaurant the other day, on a station that seemed to be playing all-time pop classics with a few current songs sprinkled in, and honestly it fit right in! For context, I also heard "Flowers" by Miley Cyrus, "I'm Good" by Bebe Rexha, "Apologize" by Timbaland and One Republic, "Anti-Hero" by Taylor Swift, "All My Love" by Led Zeppelin, and "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac all around it.
Speaks volumes about how "country" this truly is. Exactly! Today, country music is what pop/rock was in the 80's.

This is what the chart looked like back then: BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING MAY 31, 2014: 1. PLAY IT AGAIN-LUKE BRYAN-CAPITOL 2. THIS IS HOW WE ROLL-FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE AND LUKE BRYAN-REPUBLIC NASHVILLE 3. Bottoms Up-Brantley Gilbert-Valory 4. Rewind-Rascal Flatts-Big Machine 5. Beachin'-Jake Owen-RCA 6. Get Me Some Of That-Thomas Rhett-Valory 7. Automatic-Miranda Lambert-RCA 8. Beat Of The Music-Brett Eldredge-Atlantic 9. Cop Car-Keith Urban-Capitol 10. My Eyes-Blake Shelton and Gwen Sebastian-Warner Bros.

They'd definitely be able to orchestrate a way to get OTATT to the top for at least 1 week, likely after LN has already spent 4+ weeks at #1. Definitely a lot better chance at manipulating the top than outside artists on different labels would have at dethroning him.

I hate that “Handle On You” got shut out of #1 on BB because of this but “Last Night” is truly a gigantic hit on the size that we haven’t seen since… I don’t even know (in terms of country songs). It’s going to stay at #1 for a pretty long time too with a slow descent, I’m intrigued to see its chart run from here on out.

Im wondering how many good songs will be blocked by this from #1.

Sad Handle on You didn’t get to sneak into BB for a week. Last night will probably spend the next 6+ weeks on top of BB, just like Bailey did. Wild how BB went from one huge hit straight to the next, with none of the moderately big hits (Lainey, Carly, Parker, HARDY, etc.) getting a chance.

I think 6 weeks is on the low end. I won't be shocked if it hits 10.

It's funny how the Billboard chart used to be so rotational in regards to #1 but now it's kind of going back to the charts at least a decade ago in terms of #1s. Kind of here for it.

Kinda bummed "Handle on You" missed out on the BB #1, kinda happy that it happened to another male to help balance out the scales after seeing three songs in a row by women or featuring women that were obvious #1s miss out. I do like the idea of major hits spending longer at the top of the charts like it used to be, over the approach of damn near everything that comes close to #1 rotating in and out of the top spot in some pre-arranged order.

I wonder if Morgan will block a string of 4 male country singers on both charts (including Mediabase!) They all have push weeks in month of May:
Corey Kent - 5/7-5/14 Tyler Hubbard - 5/14-5/21 Dan & Shay - 5/21-5/28 Scotty McCreery 5/28-6/4
Could it be the men's turn that all get blocked from #1? This would mean "Last Night" would get 5 weeks @ #1.
But many are expecting 7-8 weeks #1 for "Last Night".
So that means Megan Moroney and Cody Johnson could be in danger also in month of June. Morgan may even block himself ("One Thing At a Time") unless the label pulls some strings by delaying the push week of OTAAT to late June.
The only song I'm confident in getting #1 is Jordan Davis "Next Thing You Know". That's a huge hit, and it's far enough away that it should have no problem with Morgan's double mega-hits.

It does seem he’s likely blocking Corey and Tyler, but as for Scotty McCreery and Dan & Shay, they might be too far behind to make it to #2. Doesn't mean I won’t be surprised if they both are able to get to #2 though. I do also think Cody’s too far behind to be a contender, and I can’t really tell whether Megan can be a contender either. Also Luke Combs could easily be a contender down the line. Maybe Jordan could end up being #1 in between Love You Anyway and Last Night.

I don't even remember the last time it happened. Please!! don't have Taylor Swift release one because she was never country anyway!!

Here’s the thing. I really like this song, but I’m getting to the point where Morgan is becoming overexposed on radio and I’m growing tired of hearing him every 30 minutes. He is also blocking everyone from #1s. The charts are starting to revert back to the 90s where the big songs spend multiple weeks at #1 and everyone else gets blocked.

Morgan may block several songs from #1. His other song OTAAT is likely a future #1 but there's 1 other song that I don't think he would want to block, maybe he would though, that's "Tennessee Orange" 😉😉 lol

According to Seth England (BigLoud CEO), “Everything I Love” is set to be the follow-up single to “Last Night”. Glad they're going with something more traditional leaning although I really thought “Man Made A Bar” was going to be next.

The wording is "next country single", so I suspect dual release is coming again.

Doubt they wait on “Thinkin’ Bout Me”, as it’s likely another big pop hit waiting. The dual release strategy would make sense. I’d prefer “‘98 Braves” or “Man Made A Bar”, but “Everything I Love” is really good and one of the countrier sounding songs on the album, so no complaints if it’s indeed next.
