With Joe Nichols and Thompson Square seeing a decent amount of early success I am so excited for Runaway June to get another shot at country radio.

On the sister label Easton isn’t doing too bad either! Gives me hope for Runaway June too! Which I’m ecstatic about since their debut was one of my favorite albums of the last…well ever really! (Though only one member remains so we’ll see if the sound changes much)

Excited to hear this and that they've landed on a new label that's showing some promising signs at having pull at radio for artists that otherwise would probably be passed over. Hoping this is a bop! I'm dying for another album from them. Blue Roses was phenomenal.

I’m super happy for them and hope they get some solid radio support! Big ups for Quartz Hill for scooping them up as it does look like they have/building some radio strength though it looks like their DSP connections might be a weaker point as their artists haven’t gotten any significant editorial playlisting.

I wish them the best, of course, but Naomi Cooke's voice was what made them for me.

Maybe it'll grow on me yet, but after a couple listens, this might be my least favorite song of theirs to date? I knew some of the "magic" would be gone with a different lead singer, but I still felt like "Broken Hearts (Do Broken Things)" was a banger and felt very "them." This one doesn't give me a Runaway June vibe though. I think it's mostly an issue with the production that takes me out of it -- feels a bit too rockish and noisy. Really rooting for them to succeed, but I'm a bit disappointed in this one.

So, something you rarely see(if ever?). This same song was released on the same day as RJ, but by an up and comer by the name of Ella Langley. But this version is part of Ella's debut EP titled "Excuse the Mess" which was just released yesterday. You may have heard her song with Koe Wetzel called "That's Why We Fight" on the Highway in recent weeks. I saw Ella at WeFest last summer and have been a fan ever since! I think her new EP is very strong and am definitely rooting for her to become a bigger name. Still...very odd to see this song released by two different artists on the same day lol

She is a co-writer of the song.

Updated front post, with songwriters information and included the audio to the song.
Writers: Jason Sellers, Ella Langley, Bobby Hambrick

After hearing Ella Langley's version of the song, I feel even more disconnected with Runaway June's version. It just doesn't feel "them," whereas I love what Ella did with the song. The production on her rendition fits her style so much better and she nails the vocal on it. It's a great song in her hands, but I just don't think it fits Runaway June's brand and while I would happily welcome it becoming a hit, it also doesn't strike me as something that will ultimately return them to the top 10 again.

Anyone know when Naomi Cooke will release a solo single?
Seems she gave her on Runaway June and wants to try on her own. I think she has a very good voice so she could well do it.

Thanks, guys! New single and new name - didn't know any of that. My question - isn't it a bit late for a summer-themed single? The country chart is so hilariously slow that it would take months to get anywhere. Is this more a promo thing?

I am sorry but this is terrible. Noisy, jumbled, total mess. I couldn't even finish it. Strong pass.

Yeah imo Naomi Cooke was the glue/it factor that really made me love Runaway June but this song is not it at all for me. Everything just sounds like a total mess.

Yeah, after they lost Naomi, I feel like they kind of lost their spark. I know Stevie is big on rock, Jennifer kind of gave the vibe that is the reason why this song is more in the rock vein.

Feel like they lost a lot of their shine when Naomi left. I'll still be rooting for them nonetheless, liked their more neo country production better, but I read somewhere that Stevie loved more rock sounding stuff, so I guess that's why this doesn't sound like their past work.

Worst thing put out under the moniker Runaway June to date, easily. I don't *hate* this, but it's just... not very good, and as others have said, it just doesn't feel like them/the brand they've created. And while I agree that changing out lead singers is obviously going to have the biggest impact, I still think "Broken Hearts (Do Broken Things)" sounded completely in the wheelhouse of what Runaway June had done previously and it was, at least to me, a total banger on par with some of their other uptempos. So, in other words, the potential was there for the transition to feel smoother, but this approach just loses me because I don't think "Make Me Wanna Smoke" is executed very well, particularly from a production standpoint. The fact that it came out literally the same day as songwriter Ella Langley's own interpretation only makes it worse, because her version SLAPS. Everything about how Ella's is delivered is superior to this rendition, which only makes the replay value of this one even lower for me.
All that aside, I would still happily welcome Runaway June to have further success in the country genre, especially since they're literally the only viable female group to come along in like ~15 years after SHeDAISY and The Chicks' radio careers both died in the mid-2000s. I just struggle with imagining this doing well, especially given the bangers they've released in the past that pretty much all died in the Lauren Alaina range (~#28-43ish), while this sounds like an even tougher sell. Idk. I wish them well and would love to hear more music from the new lineup before I potentially write them off as having fallen out of favor with me. I just need more stuff like "Broken Hearts" and less like this, please.

I will be surprised if this charts. It’s awful. Unfortunately they should have disbanded when the lead singer left the group. They already had replaced one member.

Months before it was actually a single, so it would make sense that it might've been forgotten. I actually was surprised to see them randomly put an adds date out for this since it's been 3 months.

Just saw these girls live tonight and they were so AWFUL. They're basically a cover band now doing shitty songs with bad vocals. I couldn't stay for more than like 4 songs. Naomi really carried this band... they are atrocious now. New lead singer is just a pretty face. Tragic tbh. I want SHeDAISY back.
Save your money and see Tigirlily Gold instead.
This song is a jam, but Ella Langley's original is WAY better than this.

damn, this first page is brutal! lol. I guess I am the only one who likes this song. but yeah I think it's unlikely it will do something on the charts.

I hadn't really thought of it before, but yeah, if you see RJ now, it would feel like a covers band at this point since they'll be singing their "own" songs but with totally different vocals since 2/3 of them (esp. Naomi, the recognizable lead) have left, lol. I wish Naomi's solo debut that came out this summer could get a radio push. "Girls of Summer" is a huge bop and... way better than this.
