top 50 is a given and Cher will become the oldest artist to chart at pop radio passing Elton John . she has the record of being the oldest to reach #1 on the Hot 100. Cherilyn is the oldest female artist to reach #1 on the Hot 100... Louis Armstrong hit #1 with "Hello Dolly" at age 63.

The difference between Cher and Elton is Elton has always been smarter in that he always attaches himself to a younger hot artist. Older artists need to do this to get airplay. Sad but true. Radio is very ageist and as artists get older their airplay dries up. Older male artists like Elton, Paul McCartney and others know they need to do this, and they do. Radio resistance to older female artists is even worse. Sometimes it seems female artists begin to get this resistance when still in their 30's. As Cher got into her 40s and 50s and 60s and 70s, she just puts stuff out and tries to get airplay but as a solo.
If Cher put out a song with Taylor Swift, or Dua, or Drake, or anyone hot and young, she would chart. Cher turns 78 in May and still has not taken this route. I hope she does do it and teams up with a hot younger artist just to hear her on the radio.
DJ Play a Christmas Song is a SOLO song by a 77 year-old woman and of course a new Christmas song. Hard even for younger artists to get a new Christmas song to get decent airplay, let alone for a woman pushing age 80.
The great thing about Cher is she never gives up. She just does her thing, seems to have fun and just smiles and moves on. In the USA, Radio is ageist but also rather Sexist. Harder for female artists to get airplay as they age. Not fair.
Happy to see AC Radio has embraced Cher's song. Warner Brothers Records seems to be trying to get POP Adds for her. The thing is this song is fun and lively and different. Friends in the UK tell me it is getting radio play there on mainstream stations, so the UK is less ageist against older artists.
If any older female artist can do it, it will be Cher!

A Cher/Dua collab would be fun! She’s worked with Elton and Kylie before, I’m sure she’d jump on the opportunity for a Cher collab.

Mariah Carey reached #1 after the age of 53 with AIWFCIY, and will likely up the record to her current age of 54 in the coming weeks. Unless of course Brenda Lee outdoes them both!

As we know, asterisks should always accompany records obtained weith holiday hits. If Brenda Lee hits No. 1, her hitting the top with a song she recorded in 1958, at age 13 or so, isn't quite the same as hitting No. 1 with the same song 65 years later. Also different than hitting the top with a new release.
The "Believe" record most likely will stand for a female hitting No. 1, unaccompanied, with a new release.

So right about the old Christmas songs. Look at Burl Ives' Holly Jolly Christmas. He did that for that old TV special and it charts annually as all those old songs do. Burl Ives has been dead many years and if alive would be age 114.
Judy Garland's Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas was from her musical Meet Me in St Louis made in 1944. It got lots of airplay on radio in 1944 and ever since. At some point, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas will likely FINALLY enter the Billboard Hot 100. Up until now, it stays just under. Judy committed suicide in 1969 and if alive would be 101. If her song did chart, it is not like Judy was "working" it.
OLD Christmas songs are ROTELY programmed in malls, offices, airports, hotels, public spaces. We have no choice in the matter. Those songs start getting played in Oct and we do not get a break unitl Jan 2 when they go away.
NEW Christmas music struggles. Every now and then a new Christmas song breaks out but nothing like the old songs. Look at Taylor Swift's Christmas Tree Farm. Great song and it has got on the charts but noting like the old songs.
If Cher's DJ Play a Christmas Song even Bubbled Under at #125 fora week, it is historic. Cher first entered the Billboard Bubbling Under Chart in Dec 1964, so 59 years ago with Baby Don't Go. For her to do it as a SOLO with a NEW Christmas song would be historic.
I DO hope Brenda Lee finally hits #1. I am so tired of Mariah. Mariah is also one of the only artists from those old songs who WORKS it every year. Most of those old songs are by artists that are deceased, or no longer active. Their old songs will be played year after year after year. Those "records" will be broken year after year after year.
If Cher teamed up with Drake or Taylor or Cardi B, she could get a #1 but that would be an easy way. For her as a SOLO with a new Christmas song to even Bubble Under at #125 would be a BIG DEAL.
Not only would she do it at age 77 but it would be 59 years after her first entry on a Billboard Chart AND her 7th Decade. She has been on the Billboard Hot 100 or Bubbling Under Charts for the past 6 Decades: 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's, 2000's, 2010's. For her to do it a 7th Decade as a SOLO will be amazing. The thing with Cher is she never gives up, so if she misses this year, maybe next year or the year after. Hey, she has until 2029 to do it!

Yup, that's right, the gurl hangs in there... still kicking ass and taking names! She has, after all, had more comebacks than the Tokyo stock exchange... if anyone can do it, Cher can... she's unstoppable! GO CHER!!!

Cher at Rockefeller Center on the roof singing DJ Play a Christmas Song. Loved seeing Cher and Darlene Love together. Cher did backup in 1963 fore Darlene, so over 60 years ago and have been pals ever since. Cher and Darlene Love teaming up again was epic! 60 Years is a long time in the music biz. Cher and Darlene have lived it and both sound great in their old age. They seem to just have fun!

DJ has 152 spins at pop (No. 47) on Mediabase's building chart.
Didn't see the duet at Rockefeller- that one sung live, I gather? DJ was all lip-synched- I thought that like she does with "Believe," she would sing the chrous and such when performing DJ.

So random that this only Cher's third song to ever go #1 AC... and top 50 on pop. But grateful for any Cher to be charting

I did not think Cher could do this at 77. Was just out shopping and we heard them play DJ Play a Christmas Song and I screamed. It was the only new Christmas song too. We heard Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Andy Williams, Johnny Mathis, Burl Ives and Brenda Lee. CHER was the only new song in the mix. New Christmas songs struggle since playlists are etched in stone. Either way, I am sort of shocked but happy. It would be nice if we could get more NEW Christmas songs. Lots of artists do release new Christmas music but those new songs struggle to get any airplay. So many Christmas songs are from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960's and 70's.

#1 on Billboard as well. Cher has the longest gap between #1 songs at AC. www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/cher-dj-play-a-christmas-song-number-one-adult-contemporary-chart-1235520898/Cher makes a merry move to No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary radio airplay chart (dated Dec. 9) with “DJ Play a Christmas Song.” The single surged by 31% in plays in the Nov. 24-30 tracking week, according to Luminate. 12/01/2023 The carol is the 29th holiday No. 1 on the AC chart since 2000, around the time that most stations in the format began playing seasonal songs heavily, or 24/7, between Thanksgiving and Christmas each year. NewSong’s “The Christmas Shoes” became the first such leader, while Backstreet Boys’ cover of Wham!’s “Last Christmas” reigned for five weeks last holiday season. “DJ Play a Christmas Song” also makes history for Cher, as it’s her first AC No. 1 since “If I Could Turn Back Time,” which led for a week in September 1989. She ends the longest break between No. 1s in the chart’s 62-year history: 34 years and two weeks. She surpasses Elton John, who went 23 years, 11 months and one week between “Something About the Way You Look Tonight” in 1997-98 and his own latest holiday hit, “Merry Christmas” with Ed Sheeran two Yuletide seasons ago.A week earlier, “DJ Play a Christmas Song” topped the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart, granting Cher visits to No. 1 on Billboard song surveys in every decade since the 1960s, including her run as half of Sonny & Cher. Cher adds her third AC No. 1 as a soloist, as she first led in April-May 1989 with “After All,” with Peter Cetera. Sonny & Cher notched one No. 1 on the chart: “All I Ever Need Is You,” for five weeks in 1971. Cher’s new leader is from first holiday LP, Christmas, which jingled in at No. 1 on the Nov. 4-dated Top Holiday Albums chart. All charts dated Dec. 9, including AC, Top Holiday Albums and the Holiday 100, will update on Billboard.com Tuesday (Dec. 5).

Cher last charted in the top 40 on pop radio in early 2002, with 'Song For The Lonely'. It will be almost 22 years between appearances.

i wonder if Cher has the age record for hitting #1 at AC .Elton might have had the previous record when he reached #1 two years ago with his Ed collab.
