2023 was a very interesting year for music, with quite a few ups, but also some abysmal lows (looking at you, far-right country hits). Each year, I always make a personal year-end top 100 as sort of a time capsule of the year. Since 2016, I had always just made the list for myself, but I decided to publish it on here last year, and I wanted to do the same again this year. Given the Billboard Hot 100 year-end chart just came out, I may as well post mine as well. Unlike some people’s personal charts on here, my chart doesn’t really adhere to any rules, other than the extremely subjective rule that it has to feel like a song from this year to me (stuff like “Anti-Hero” and “As It Was” is thus ineligible).
There were a number of artists that dominated this year for me, most prominently Taylor Swift, who dominated one-fifth of this year’s chart with a total of 20 songs charting. Olivia Rodrigo was close behind, with 6 songs from Guts charting. Although I liked Paramore previously, I did a deep-dive on their discography to prepare for This Is Why, which caused me to fall in love with their post-2012 material. As a result, 5 songs from This Is Why charted here, making them my #3 artist of the year. Another one of my top artists of the year managed to pull off a feat that has never happened before on my personal year-end chart - charting unreleased material. In October, eight never-before-heard songs leaked online from Bridgit Mendler’s second studio album, which Hollywood Records forced her to scrap due to breaking her contract. Four of these unreleased songs made this chart. Although she does not appear on this chart due to not releasing any material this year, the final artist that dominated this year for me was Alessia Cara. Alessia is my partner’s favorite artist, so I was inspired to do a full listen of her entire discography, and she quickly has become one of my favorite artists of the year.
My #1 song of the year, “Sweater Weather” by The Neighbourhood probably deserves some explanation as well, considering it’s from 2012 and didn’t make a resurgence. Last October, my local CHR put “Sweater Weather” in power rotation for the entire winter. During that period, the song clicked for me in a way it hadn’t during its original run, and I fell in love with the song. Interestingly, my CHR has continued to give the song heavy airplay even throughout this whole summer to the present day; they’ve literally played it as much as stuff like “Flowers” and “Calm Down,” which as a chart watcher is fascinating and insane considering it wasn’t even a hit. (Fun fact though, the PD of my local station is the same guy who’s responsible for Taylor Swift’s “Exile” repeatedly making the top 50 on Hot AC years later lol) Anyway, the strange run on my station didn’t necessarily factor into my liking the song as much as I did, but hearing it regularly made me fall in love with the song, and it honestly feels like a quintessential song of this year, and has a lot of personal significance to me <3
Without further ado, here is my chart for the year! I'm including both text form and image form. The number to the left of the image denotes the position the song was on my personal chart last year, if applicable.
