one of the first r&b songs to crossover to the pop charts came in 1951 .some consider it one of the first rock and roll songs as well. it was by group that combined the r&b of it's time and gospel which at the time was considered controversial . the lyrics were quite sexual which was what rock and roll meant at the time before becoming a genre . the song spent 14 weeks at #1 on the r&b chart and reached #17 on Billboard's best selling pop chart. the original lead singer Clyde McPhatter who appeared on this song and the one who replaced him Jackie Wilson were later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
