The period of eligibility is probably half done now. Let’s talk about what the 2025 awards may bring.

It's way too early to tell. A lot of this depends on reception to the albums, singles, etc. But Kacey, SZA and Taylor are definitely in the mix now.

I think it’s too early to have any contenders in the general field. Nothing that has been released so far has any momentum

I’d like to see the Grammys publicly award Janet Jackson with the Global Impact Award in 2025!

I know I passingly said in the Grammy thread that Kylie needed to perform to liven up the show, but the more I think about it, it's time for her to have a Grammy moment on the stage.
Not only is she a multiple Grammy award winner now, but she's an industry vet and beloved icon that's been doing this for nearly 40 years. And don't come at me with "she's not big in the US" either. She's had more hits and sold more albums in the US than Jon Batiste. And they have no issues carting him out onstage and throwing awards at him when nobody knows who he is.
Also, they have got to deal with the Lana issue. It's getting downright rude at this point, lol. Hopefully her album this year is as well received as her last several albums and she finally gets her due.

What tf? We really need to get new writers and editors at these sources. (They did post a reply correcting the title but this should not have happened in the first place.)
:ETA: This should be in the 2024 thread, at the time I didn't realize there were two threads going. Oh well.

I wanna see continued success for my girls Coco Jones, Sza and Victoria Monet. I would love to see Fantasia make new music that is Grammy worthy and matches her immensely talented vocals.
Id love to see the continued trolling and losing streak of a certain artist
And I would love to see Mariah win a Grammy with her new project even if it's not televised
It's also a damn shame they didn't let Vocal powerhouse Kelly Clarkson perform this year so let's fix that pronto 😔

I’m sure Taylor will at least be in the AOTY mix, however I highly doubt she wins. They’ve done their history-making with her; I can already see the backlash for two AOTY wins in consecutive years now. I was obviously ecstatic to see TS make history, and depending on The Tortured Poets Department’s quality I would be over the moon to see it in back-to-back years…but SZA was also deserving this year, and I would very much like to see Black excellence begin to be recognized. Because how the fuck (rhetorical question; I know how) have I never seen a black woman win AOTY in my entire life?! Mind you, I turn 24 years old in October.
I hope Lana’s country album is strong enough to finally get her some Grammys, because her lack of hardware is atrocious. Cannot believe these old white men are too uncomfortable to take her seriously as an artist because of some SNL performance from over a decade ago that nobody even remotely remembers.

By the way a bit lost in the conversation about AOTY is that ROTY is just as dire when it comes to acknowledging Black women. Lizzo's win last year is the only time in the past 30 years that a Black woman won ROTY. We literally went from "I Will Always Love You" to "About Damn Time" without a Black woman winning ROTY despite hugely successful (critical and commercial success) singles from Beyonce, Mariah, Missy, Alicia, Rihanna, Doja Cat, Toni, TLC, Tracy Chapman, MIA, and more.

I'm hoping Megan Thee Stallion will get some noms in the rap categories for "HISS" & "Cobra". Plus her album if it is as good as the two introductory tracks so far! Would love "HISS" to win a grammy, perhaps for music video?
I assume Taylor will get a bunch of nominations.
Hopefully Dua's album will be great and she'll get some noms for that and its singles.

That godawful Benson Boone song is looking to be pretty massive. I can already see it taking up slots in SOTY or ROTY.

What are the chances Taylor doesn’t submit her new album/singles to Grammys?

The idea that Taylor has to NOT submit is laughable.
I do think she's gonna fare much worse this time. Less nods and probably no wins. Kinda like how Speak Now/Reputation/Evermore all relatively underperformed compared to predecessors (rep itself signaled a career decline that seemed all but inevitable until folklore turned her commercial and critical trajectory around).
Anyways, no way the committee doesn't try to avoid another AOTY win. I don't see Ariana as a big contender either. Beyonce maybe -seems to be a new direction for her and who knows if country will embrace her.

The Grammys are gonna be a shitshow next year with the whole Taylor vs Beyonce AOTY showdown. I hope we can add Adele to the mix to make it extra messy.

ADT happened to be the 2nd song this century with a Black woman as the main artist to top Adult Pop radio. After Bleeding Love, and I remember even then people wondering if she was just a one hit wonder.

All this talk about AOTY, when ROTY has essentially the same issue. Slight correction: Toni and Missy have never been nominated for ROTY, though. Looking back at the category, If I could retroactively select the ROTY winners between Whitney and Lizzo, with regards to Black women; These would be my winners: 1996: TLC "Waterfalls" (over Seal) 1997: Tracy Chapman "Give Me One Reason" (over Eric Clapton) 2001: Macy Gray "I Try" (over U2) 2002: Alicia Keys "Fallin" (over U2, additionally I would have given "Video" by India.Arie the SOTY win over Alicia, as well as R&B Song. I just think Video is a much better song lyrically speaking, sorry back on topic.) 2006: Mariah Carey "We Belong Together" (over Green Day, though I do like that song so not upset it won, but Mariah missed out on many potential wins in years priors, and not only would this have been a nice makeup award, it also imo would have been rewarding critical and commercial success) 2008: Rihanna/Jay Z "Umbrella" (over Amy's Rehab) 2011: Alicia Keys/Jay Z "Empire State of Mind" (over "Need You Now" - yuck) 2019: Kendrick/SZA "All the Stars" (over Childish Gambino, and again in Rap/Sung collab) 2020: anything but Bad Guy would have sufficed for me, but I'd probably go with "Truth Hurts" by Lizzo.

Oh sorry, I didn't mean to imply they'd been nominated; I was making a general point about the strong singles Black women have released across the past 30 years, whether or not they were nominated. It's actually wild that Missy was never nominated for ROTY since she's known for her classic singles. It was always interesting to me, too, that the year Lauryn Hill won AOTY she wasn't even nominated in ROTY for "Doo Wop." Maybe that helped her win AOTY as everyone had to vote for her there to get her a win, not sure. Separate but related to your post, I also wish "Video" (or "I'm Like a Bird") won SOTY over "Fallin." I then wish "If I Ain't Got You" had won SOTY over "Daughters." Meanwhile, a fair amount of Black men who make all different kinds of music have been able to win one or more of the top awards in the past 30 years; Childish Gambino, Seal, Ray Charles, Luther Vandross, Outkast, Jon Batiste, Herbie Hancock, the songwriters on "That's What I Like," Pharrell, Silk Sonic, and then Babyface, D'Mile, and Dream/Tricky depending how you count them in that they won for working on the music of other artists.

The Grammys are gonna be a shitshow next year with the whole Taylor vs Beyonce AOTY showdown. I hope we can add Adele to the mix to make it extra messy. This is the problem. I'm not saying these artists don't make great music / albums, but people automatically put them there by name alone. (A mediocre album by one of these names will undoubtedly be better received than a mediocre album by, say, Gwen Stefani).

While all 3 have good albums, all 3 also have albums that were average but received critical acclaim based on name alone. If other artists put out the same album, they wouldn’t get the same acclaim. You can’t tell me if Katy Perry released ‘Midnights’ that critics would be as nice to her. But I’m 99% sure both Taylor and Beyonce will be nominated in AOTY even if both albums are average. Only way I see them missing nominations is if the albums are tragically bad (which is unlikely).

I really don't think people realize how fraudulent the reviews are for the albums by the major players. It's all just a game that the critics are 'forced' to play. I like the idea that the Beyonce's and Taylor's of the pop world can go head to head for big awards, as it creates excitement for the fans, and hopefully draws eyes to the show itself. But, they aren't always putting out good-to-great albums. I personally was happy with Midnights win this year, as I liked it enough, but was it really the best.. probably not.

Agreed about the "I'm Like a Bird" option too (same again with the lack of Pop Song category lol). Really, "Fallin'" was just not it for me on a songwriting basis, but at least U2 didn't win.

I liked "Daughters" ok enough at the time, but the lyrics of the song haven't really aged well (so Mayer's troubled relationships are all because of his girlfriends' fathers and not him, and dads need to do better so he can have good girlfriends?) whereas "If I Ain't Got You" sounded like a classic when it was released and still does IMO. More so any of the other nominees would have been a better pick. Yeah the lack of a Pop Song category remains perplexing.

That isn’t one of them.
