Maybe I should just keep my opinion to myself from now on. There was no intent on my end to come off as or sound racist. I never said I didn't like the song, as I actually do like it. It just doesn't fit (my opinion) on country radio at all. I'm fine with being told I'm wrong as people are entitled to their opinion. But to make me out to be racist is very uncomfortable and to be honest it's insulting. I think it's fine to not like the song, to think it doesn't fit the genre is also fine if there's consistency in always not liking the more genre-fluid songs. However for the most part we've seen a ton of people who like songs such as Morgan Wallen's "Thinkin' Bout Me", which is (imo) way less country than this or Beyoncé's song, come out and say it doesn't fit or doesn't belong in country. I've heard and seen people flat out say that Beyoncé doesn't belong in country because she's black. This is all not to say you specifically are racist, but it's unfortunately a safe bet that a lot of those who are saying similar things are. I've noticed over the years of you posting you tend to favor more traditional or at least 90's-esque sounds, so it's not overly surprising to me that you wouldn't like these songs. I don't personally think you were coming from a place of racism, I also remember you specifically speaking out on someone being blatantly racist. But understand that sometimes it's hard for those of us who deal with racism to differentiate. Especially in text formats where we don't always hear the intention in someone's inflection and body language. Other's have expressed and explained how/why they feel some posted comments may make them feel. Doesn't mean you shouldn't post your thoughts, but be open to the discussion and reflect on the reasons word choices may come off certain ways. This is my understanding of Shooter's post. "I don't like" vs "doesn't belong".

Ditto what Kanenrá:ke said but I'd also add that dropping a drive-by one-liner like this: This does not fit at country radio in any way. ... without elaborating on your thoughts more is also part of the problem here. You didn't offer any discourse on why you adamantly felt it didn't fit on country radio, which allowed for others to fill in those blanks for you. This is a forum so when you just drop brief statements that come off as closed-minded, it doesn't help spur discussion.

It just doesn't fit (my opinion) on country radio at all. I'm fine with being told I'm wrong as people are entitled to their opinion. But to make me out to be racist is very uncomfortable and to be honest it's insulting. To set the record straight, I was not making you out to be racist; I’m very intentional with the language I use so if I felt you are, I would’ve just said that. And, as one of the few Black people on Pulse that actually does visit this section of the board, I find it kind of insulting that my words were reduced to a racism cry. I was highlighting how certain phrasing and commentary comes across as racially biased — which can be viewed as thinly-veiled racism from the outside looking in and just because I didn’t see it that way doesn’t mean others won’t. In this moment, you stated that you do like the song but think it doesn’t fit and that little bit of clarification makes a world of difference. If a non-Black person pops in one of the very few Black artist threads here just to say “this is not country music” or “this has no business being on country radio”, it sounds a lot like “country music is for whites only” and I’d hope you and whoever else is commenting on these songs in 2024 could come up with a smarter, more nuanced take than that. At minimum, even if someone doesn’t like the song or think it’s country enough, then they could at least celebrate the fact that more Black artists are now getting a fairer shot at making shitty music successful like their white peers do. Equality should be equitable regardless of it meeting our personal standards. No one’s making us listen to it (and no one’s making us comment either).

If it doesn't fit country radio, then that would only be because country radio has moved far away from actual country music. Having said that, artists from Jason Aldean to Morgan Wallen to Florida Georgia Line and more have consistently been incorporating pseudo-rap stylings in their songs for years now, along with beats that are far removed from traditional country. I don't see how "A Bar Song" is any less fit for country radio than singles by those artists, and if anything it more prominently features fiddle than songs by those guys. The lyrics to "A Bar Song" definitely fit as well.

What I do find interesting is that A Bar Song, Austin & TEXAS HOLD'EM are all quite similar stomp & holler. Yet, there isn't as much debate in the Austin thread whether that one belongs in the country format (when that's probably the one that will go furthest)

Holy moly what an earworm. This song is undeniably catchy and fun. Rightfully smashing. The birth of another multi-format king!

Yet, there isn't as much debate in the Austin thread whether that one belongs in the country format (when that's probably the one that will go furthest) I think everyone understands why 'Austin' is being crowned as authentically country while there is so much controversy about 'A Bar Song' and 'TEXAS HOLD'EM'.
With that said 'A Bar Song' is brilliant. And you know what - I agree it stands out on country radio right now. But that's because it is one of the most apparent, traditionally-leaning, authentically country tracks to be serviced to country radio in a long time. When it's the likes of Morgan Wallen, Sam Hunt, and Jason Aldean occupying 95% of country radio air time - of course people are going to think their pop-music with slightly country tinges is 'real country'.

“A Bar Song (Tipsy)” moves up seven spots (for the second week in a row) to #24 on Billboard Country Airplay this week! Country radio is showing a clear interest in this which is great!
