Infinity won't do anything to K-Rock until they have the 102.7 situation under control. The last thing they need is TWO stations floundering in the bottom of the ratings searching for a format.

I agree. It's New Jersey that needs Country. ;)
NOOO that's where I live! >:( When NJ gets a little bit country, that's when you know this whole new-age conservatism thing has gone too far. >_<

Whoa, I know you're joking but if there's one thing that rubs Jersey boys and girls the wrong way, it's when out-of-staters try to tell them how things should be in their state! >:(
There was a rumor some time ago about New York getting another CHR station to go up against Z100. WNEW briefly went CHR before switching to Blink. Perhaps 'NEW or K-Rock could go CHR? What about WLTW? They don't have in-market competition.

I seriously hope that they do not completely change the format on WXRK. If they take a slightly different musical/programming direction, that's fine (unless they make it even more Active-leaning than it already is), but no total format changes. It's bad enough we lost WHFS and Y100, I'd really hate to see WXRK go, in spite of what I may think of the current state of the station.
Country is the most-listened to format in America, it's doing FAR better than CHR/Pop, and there are FAR more country stations with double-digit shares than any music format in all market sizes nationwide.
Country music sales also soared 12% last year; the industry as a whole was up barely over 1.5%.
It also wouldn't make sense to launch a CHR/Pop station in NYC; is Z-100's mid 4 share range (where they've been stuck for most of the past 15 years) worth going after?

LOL. With all due respect, I find it hilarious when someone steps in from a different part of the country and insists that NYC needs a Country station because it's "popular." It may be popular in the country overall, but Country is NOT popular in NYC. It would NOT do better than Pop in NYC. People are not interested in it in NYC. This is basic business people, analyze the market you want to bring a product to before you start pushing that product. NYC is nothing like Kentucky or Nevada or wherever it is you come from. It's its own niche market and Country is a flop there. Period.

Yes, but a country station will get far higher ratings than whatever 102.7 is pulling now.

While that may be true, there are a multitude of options that would not only pull higher ratings that 102.7, but higher ratings than a Country station would pull too.
As a non-New Yorker, I've never associated country music with New York City, even when WYNY was on 103.5 and when Garth Brooks held the free concert in Central Park. I even find country music in Chicago as out of place, but WUSN does pretty well there.

Damn right . Anyway putting a country station in either NYC or NJ is like me turning on lite fm tomorrow and hearing Green Day's American Idiot uncensored. It makes no sense. Nobody in this area would eveer listen to a country station really now.
Why would a country station NOT do well in NYC, if the research is done to support launching one on a REAL signal?
WUSN has been doing very well in Chicago for years, as have country-formatted stations in most of America's largest cities.
The last time I checked, the highest rated radio station in ANY of America's 20 largest cities is a country station--WPOC in Baltimore.
If the research would support a country station in NYC, then why not, given the income levels and TONS of disposable income country listeners have, which is FAR gigher than your typical CHR/Pop or CHR/Rhythmic listener?

WPOC is doing well but is currently behind Urban WERQ in its own market and has a lower rating than the following other Top 20 market stations: WBEB Philadelphia (AC) WSB-AM Atlanta (News/Talk) WVEE Atlanta (Urban) WPRM Puerto Rico (Tropical) KQRS Minneapolis-St. Paul (Classic Rock) WCCO-AM Minneapolis-St. Paul (News/Talk) KMOX-AM St. Louis (News/Talk) KEZK St. Louis (AC) That puts WPOC's rating tenth among Top 20 market stations. WPOC's ratings have gone down.
I like a lot of songs that got little or no airplay.

At the K-Rock acoustic show I was hearing a rumor that it was changing to Urban AC. I was surprised that they were even thinking of changing the format.
It seems to have a lot more credibility than I initially expected.

Urban AC? Jeez, we already have two of them. I wouldn't even support turning 102.7 into one of those.
If WXRK's non-Howard programming is really struggling so much in the ratings, why not make some kind of attempt to get the station's name out there more? I'm hard pressed to remember EVER seeing a K-Rock ad on TV.

KROCK is the #1 rock station in the country. The idea of closing it down is ludicrous. First of all, there would be no main rock station for NYC, which is obviously unacceptable. Also, Urban AC? What kind of joke is that?
Do NOT be surprised if WXRK changes formats after Stern departs; their ratings are terrible once he leaves the air, according to an Inifinity exec in last week's issue of R&R.
He's #1 overall in morning drive in NYC with a staggering 7.0 rating, but the station's ratings once he leaves are barely in the 2.0 range.
