Commentary

Teena Marie and Gerald Levert advance to #1 this week with "A Rose By Any Other Name".  Not only was this title Levert's first Top 10 hit, but now he has his first #1.  This is Teena Marie's second #1 this year following the #1 success of "Still In Love" in April.  That song spent a single week at #1.  Considering "A Rose By Any Other Name" already lost it's bullet last week, although still able to pass "You're My Everything," Teena and Gerald may repeat that feat.

Another artist that has accomplished his first is Ron Isley, and like Gerald Levert he is also assisting a female performer.  "Gotta Go Solo" with Patti LaBelle advances to #10 this week giving Isley his first Top 10 hit.  This is LaBelle's second Top 10 hit this year.  "New Day" peaked at #3 in May.

Britney Spears is the only debut this week, with her cover of "My Prerogative".  It likely won't even spend a second week on.  This is the lowest number of debuts since January 9, 2003 when Field Mob's "Sick Of Being Lonely" was the only debut.  This is only the second time in chart history that only one song debuted.

Comments:

Nice jump for Modest Mouse to #1 (first non-country #1 in the short history of my chart).  Biggest mover is Gavin DeGraw, up 7, leaving the rest of the chart somewhat dull, except for an 9-notch fall for Kenny Chesney (biggest dropper).  Nice debut for Jeremy Camp.  Look for some more chart movement next week as well as some big action for Toby Keith, seeing as I'm going to see him in concert this week.  As stated above, I will be expanding to a Top 30 next week, since there are several good songs out there right now (IMO).

Brandy actually falls off this week even as "I Tried" makes big strides (I know it's not an official single at this point but I'm playing it anyway). Finally got sick of "Goodies" after a 9 week chart; it comes in just one point behind Brandy, putting it at #12 for the year.

The chart underwent some changes this week. It went from a Top 40 Chart to a Top 50 Chart. Only two of the songs are completely new, however, since others were charting on my other chart. My other chart was just a rearranging of the current top 40. I decided to change it to just songs I like, make it more my own.

Debuting this week are Maria Mena and Ashanti. Maria Mena comes in at number 16, with her second hit. Her first, "You're The Only One", had a decent run, and peaked at number 7. It's aiming for a spot in the top 50 of my year-end chart.

Ashanti jumps aboard at number 6, with her third hit since my chart has been running. Her first, "Mesmerize", a collaboration with Ja Rule, hit the top 3 in the winter of 2003. Her second, "Rock Wit U (Awww Baby)", hit the top 5 in the summer of 2003. However, this song is fated for a better future. It has a strong chance of hitting the top spot.
