It makes sense, because harder nu-metal/in-your-face/cock-rock bands like Limp Bizkit & Korn hit it big on TRL back in '99. And I don't mean to use the term "cock-rock" in an insulting manner.
My question is: If you are either a new or established band, can you control whether or not you receive TRL airplay or how far it goes there? I would suppose so, but maybe I'm wrong.
That said, I admire this band's talent. I'm hearing tempo changes, ability to harmonize the vocals, and just general in-your-face screamo metal. That said, this song is a novelty and I can't see this band remaining popular for years to come. I won't pick up the album unless they blow me away with a second single, which likely won't happen.
In fact, are there any slower or mid-tempo songs on this album? If the entire album sounds like this, there is no way this band has lasting power. They need to demonstrate they can work several sides of the aisle before I become interested in buying anything from them.

The only novelty I see in this song is how they branded themselves in the title, and I love the way they did it. Most acts that do such a thing do so in the lamest manner possible...most often it's an upcoming hip-hop artist or producer that repeatedly name drops his or her own name directly into the lyrics. Not here though. I just think a title like "Bat Country" fits them perfectly, and for people who don't understand what the band is about, they just won't get it.
They have several down-tempo songs in their repertoire, as well as many others that have slower portions in them. Most of them tend to run long (ie. "I Won't See You Tonight" from their last album is amazing, but it's over 9 minutes long). Actually, nearly all their songs are longer than 5 minutes. That'll probably keep them from becoming a big radio band, unless they could somehow build up credibility comparable to Tool (and all these TRL appearances are not the way to get there).

The band asked their fans to vote for them like crazy on TRL, and as a result, they made it to #1. So its not just random teenies that vote, the real dedicated fans play a major part, just like many other bands that have made the countdown.

I was thinking more in terms of the scene they come from. I've heard a song or two from their previous album, and while it's not totally different than "Bat Country", it was sufficiently radio-unfriendly enough for me (and Nicholas2.0) to think they were never likely to see more than minor Active Rock success.
The band asked their fans to vote for them like crazy on TRL, and as a result, they made it to #1. So its not just random teenies that vote, the real dedicated fans play a major part, just like many other bands that have made the countdown.
Hmm... okay. I'd have thought the hardcore fans would be pissed, and I'm sure some of them still are.

haha...yes, they are pissed. But they still vote for them because the band asked them too.

Um...I'm not sure that's the typical case.

I have never thought of a band's fan numbers increasing a bad thing. Whether or not teeni-boopers are starting to like AS or not. Atleast it is more exposure than they have gotten with either of there two other disc. Which I picked up and are brillant to say the least

Atleast it is more exposure than they have gotten with either of there two other disc. Which I picked up and are brillant to say the least Well they've apparently always wanted to be the biggest band in the world, and more power to them if that's what they want, but I just don't think having #1 videos on TRL, at least the way it is right now--however the countdown was the best I'd ever seen it, the week A7X (their "official" abbreviation, for whatever that's worth) were "introduced" to TRL by Good Charlotte--is the smartest approach, whether they have any control over that or not. As long as they play their cards right, I fully believe they are capable of being this generation's Guns N' Roses or Metallica, especially after seeing their latest live show. My girlfriend Vicky has this thing about James Hart, the singer for Eighteen Visions (who may very well blow up in their own right in the '06, once their new album comes out next summer, with the push of a major label behind it. From what I understand, they are actually the opening band on A7X's '06 tour, before CKY. I don't know if that goes for the whole tour, but god I hope so. A bill with A7X & 18V on it would put Vicky and me in heaven.) Anyway, James is so obviously influenced by Scott Weiland that Vicky, before even remembering his name, would just (and still does) refer to him as "Baby Scott." After seeing A7X this last time, and seeing lead guitarist Synyster Gates perform in what has become his trademark hat now, Vicky and I (independently!) started thinking of him as "Baby Slash." When I talked to them again after the last show, I found out I was older (barely) than everyone in that band! Jesus, that made my head spin. In conclusion, if it's what they want, I don't mind them blowing up, but I'd prefer it done without such strong TRL support, I'd like to be able to talk with all of them one last time before they become so huge that's not feasible anymore, and I'd like them to set up some type of fan club I could join. I know Waking the Fallen is amazing. I've been singing their praises based off of it for over 2 years now. I got it in October and it was already my 10th favorite album of 2003 (7th, using only 2003 albums). It was far and away my favorite album of last year. I got Sounding the Seventh Trumpet for my birthday last year and love it, to a much lesser degree, and City of Evil will be my favorite album of 2005 hands down.

I feel bad that I didn't get into this sooner. This is certainly right up my alley, almost along the lines of Maiden, Preist and early Queensryche. I had to push my latest order up on CD Universe so I could get this CD and "...Fallen" a little early. Great guitar work! Is there more like it on "City Of Evil?"

Great guitar work! Is there more like it on "City Of Evil?" If I understand correctly, you're still waiting on your order for Waking the Fallen and City of Evil? Yeah, there's an abundance of mesmerizing guitar work and dual-lead solos on every track. The solo in the middle of "Beast and the Harlot," when it was the teaser track on their website last spring, made me not even want to bother picking up a guitar and learning it. The level of musicianship on the record blows away their previous records, actually. And they're all 24 and under! (Bassist Johnny Christ is only 20!)

Yeah, every month I order a bunch of CDs to fill in gaps in my collection and I get an order of about 60-70 before I finalize the order. So, the last time I started an order, I noticed that "Bat Country" had never been sent to me by Promo Only. I started reading reviews here, and at Amazon.com and decided to buy both. Now that I purchased the track on Itunes, I jumped the order up so I can get them sooner. It's either that or running out today to Circuit City which I quite honestly would rather avoid. I'm looking forward to these.

Well, 18V had to nix the tour in order to be able to finish their record by June. But as far as Avenged Sevenfold paving the way for their peers in Eighteen Visions goes, MTV seems to think so, too. :) www.mtv.com/news/articles/1519164/20051222/eighteen_visions.jhtml?headlines=true

If not for "Twisted Transistor", this would have a decent chance at hitting #1 on AR. Dammit! >:(
EDIT: Hmmm...this morning looks better than yesterday morning did. (Yesterday morning, Korn still had a triple-digit bullet, and A7X's was less than +48 [their current bullet].) Still...they've got just under 200 to go.

Sigh...only on the r2m chart. On the official chart, they're still 76 spins behind 10 Years.

In the line "my hand is on the trigger" I noticed that MTV replaces the word "trigger" with some honking noise. >:( At least they didn't choose the Madden 2006 edit: As well as:

I love this song! I never get sick of it. I'm surprised at how well this is doing at Alt. It seemed to be fiddling when it was outside the Top 10, now it's going to go Top 5.
I hope their next single is "Beast and the Harlot."

It's hit #1 a little late, but I'm glad it did altogether.

After four months of listening to this song about twice or thrice a week consistently, I have discovered that I strongly dislike this song and mildly dislike this band. Seriously, what is it that makes this (them) so appealing?
To me, this is standard cock-rock "loud metal music your mother hates" fare. How are they so special?

I can't think of any other current bands that really sound like them. I'm as surprised as the next guy that they're doing so well, but I also can't deny that they're pretty different from a lot of other bands on the radio.
