No Jeff, #10 is not The Reason, although that does fit the clue. No, in the clue I was actually referencing a line in the song...

#10 is Finger Eleven, One Thing. Nice Work! Now for #9: In the first verse of the song, the artist also uses the name of a very minor pop hit by Krystal Harris.

And that's the hit! 8) When the artist recorded this song, the artist probably never imagined how true it would become - a #1 single that will never be regarded as such... Avril Lavigne - (So Much For) My Happy Ending (mst3k 7) This band definitely felt the pressure of pop radio this year.Β This single made the top 10, but their followup didn't. Linkin Park - Numb (The WannaBe DJ)

8) Avril Lavigne - (So Much For) My Happy Ending Great work! And isn't the title appropriate, considering it couldn't hang onto #1 through the Sunday update? My clue for #7 wasn't as general as it sounded. I used a certain word in there that was directly supposed to clue you into the title of the song. But perhaps you just weren't feelin' it...

And that's the hit! 6) There were rumors that this debut hit was supposed to also be released to Christian radio, but I don't know if that was true.Β In either case, the song made top 10 on pop and #1 on my chart. Ryan Cabrera - On The Way Down (Jeffster) 5) Daredevil stunts (dancing?) and a secret mission encompass the theme of the video for the #1 smash. Britney Spears - Toxic (The WannaBe DJ)

Wow, no one even tried to guess?Β OK, let's try some other clues...
6) In the previous clue, I used the title of the artist's followup to this hit.
5) Although this was the artist's second single off of the artist's newest album, many might argue THIS was the artist's comeback single.

Now let's get a guess for #5! This game appears to be slipping under for many members! ;)

Yes, it must have come out right after I posted that one, sorry.
OK, for the next two:
4) Think of a Craig David song and that should lead you to this #1 smash.
3) This is the only song in the top 5 that didn't hit #1 on my chart. It's by a band that has something in common with Savage Garden and The Goo Goo Dolls.

OK time for more hints.
4) When you think of the Craig David song, which hit the top 10 on pop, it should immediately remind you of a verse in this pop smash.
3) Before this hit, many people may have been in the dark about this band.Β However, their latest album has really put them in the same direction as other bands like 3DD and MB20. Hoobastank - The Reason (Matt4319)

I love how you can tell who's been paying attention to this game. There are only so many songs that hit #1 in 2004, but they never seem to care enough to look it up.

4. Ashlee Simpson- "Pieces of Me"? That's the song! Whew! When I said a Craig David song, I was referring to "7 Days", where he lists the days of the week. Of course, in the first verse of Pieces of Me, Ashlee does the same. Wow thetop 2 songs of 2004 are now on our doorstep! Let's get to the runner-up. 2) Mariah Carey may have seen this in the early 90s, but this band had this. The song went top 10 on multiple radio formats.

2) This Overplayed Song...errr.. I mean This Love by Maroon 5? Jeff - NICE WORK! You of course figured out that I was referring to Mariah's "Vision of Love" in my clue. And now folks... the #1 song of 2004. The song that earned more points on my chart this year than any other. The song that takes the cake for best song of 2004. The creme de la creme. The icing on the multi-layered cake. The one that stands up the rest. Before we move into that song, let's look back on the #1s in years past: 1999: This was a short year since my chart started in July 1999. The #1 song for that year was by a young female who bursted onto the seen with a #1 smash hit that spent 22 weeks in the top 10 on the pop chart and even made the top 20 on RHY. Her next single, this song, was supposed to be released in March, but because the artist injured herself during the video shoot, the single was delayed until June. But it didn't hurt her on my chart. It was the #1 single when my chart started and remained in the top 10 until early December. Who was this pop princess? None other than - Britney Spears - Sometimes2000: When this artist came out with a greatest hits album, I was thrilled. But what else thrilled me - NEW TRACKS on the album, including this smash hit. The song rose quickly to #1 in early February 2000 on my chart and sat there for 10 weeks, the record for the most weeks at #1 by any song. The song remained in the top 10 of my chart until May-June and then fell off. Her followup didn't quite make it onto my chart, but it was no matter. This diva had made her presence known that year, including a video for this song that reigned supreme on VH-1's top 10 and this single which spent an unprecedented 18 weeks @ #2 on the AC chart and peaked at #3 on the pop chart and also made the top 5 on Hot AC. Who is this international superstar with the voice that plays on my CD player even today? Who else but Celine Dion - That's The Way It is! 2001: The year started out with a major change - the chart expanded from 20 to 30 positions. The year started out slowly with a few songs hitting #1 for 4-5 weeks, but staying power was quite limited. Then, this song came out in May and I instantly fell in love with it. The song had a relatively slow climb to #1, but did manage to get there in July 2001 and stayed there for 9 big weeks. The song just had the craziest lyrics, using words like "fried chicken" and "lattes" in a song about love that extends beyond Earth. The song didn't fall off the chart until late that year, but it already earned enough points to top the year-end chart. Who was this band that dominated the radio airwaves in the summer and fall of 2001 on pop, AC, Hot AC, AAA, and Rock? That top act - Train - Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)! 2002: 2002 wasn't the best year for music IMO. Lots of flux was happening on pop radio with pop favorites falling out of favor and emerging hip-hop starts crossing the CHR bridge from RHY to POP. The longest charting #1 on my chart that year only stayed at the top for 6 weeks. But that wasn't the #1 song of the year. No, the #1 song of the year spent only 3 weeks at the top of the chart, but it had enough time overall to score the #1 spot on the year-end. It was by a female singer who was no stranger to my chart or my CD player. It was the first single off of the artist's brand new album, 2 years in the making, and it shot straight to #1 on my chart. The song also made large waves on AC, where it set the then record for most weeks @ #1 - 19 weeks. The song was about the singer's new baby who brought great joy to her life and also opened a new chapter to her life. Who is this songstress who captured my ears so well throughout 2002? Yes that's right - the Canadian superstar Celine Dion - A New Day Has Come2003: Last year featured major changes for my chart. The chart grew from 30 to 40 positions. It was also the first year that I started to listen to Christian radio and artists like Switchfoot, Stacie Orrico, Newsboys, Todd Agnew, and Warren Barfield started finding homes on my chart. And while 50 Cent's "In Da Club" spent 8 weeks @ #1 that year, it couldn't muster enough "umph" to oust this song for the year. The #1 song of 2003 came from a pop/rock band that has been on my chart since 2000. Their chart history before then had many top 10 hits including their #1 single "Bent" and top 10 smashes "If You're Gone" and "Mad Season." But when this single came along, I instantly fell in love with it. It was perfect to me and the song went straight to #1 for 6 weeks in the summer of 2003. Who was this superstar pop/rock band who felt great at #1? It's of course Rob Thomas and boys of matchbox twenty - Unwell. Now, who is at the top of my chart this year? A new clue coming up tomorrow! :)
