Hey guys, I was wondering how rich do you think some of these popstars are today, and is money really what drives a lot of them or is it the satisfaction of making great music.
For example, how much do you think an Artist like Tori Amos would be worth, compared to say Michelle Branch?
Then you have huge 90's artists like Alanis who earned $1 for every copy of JLP sold (about $30 million dollars in the end) and is now reported to be signed on for a $5 Million dollar 5 Album contract, which if true seems extremely pathetic compared to the huge sums paid to the likes of Mariah Carey and Robbie Williams.
How would Pink match up with Alanis or Avril with Britney etc. Do Rap artists really earn obscene amounts of money compared to say somone like John Mayer and also Matchbox 20.
I've alway wondered how much all these artists get paid, and how important their financial standing was to them, relative to other artists. Do they compete?
One last question, do artists earn royalties for the number of times there songs are played on the radio?
Share your thoughts!

That's what I've been elaborating for years, Chickenshit. But the truth of the matter of these performers is this: "it's the money, stupid!" As much as they do not want to admit, in every avenue they do in life, it's the CREAM. I've seen some program on the E! Entertainment Channel about young performers and how loaded they realy are.
Now there are some artists who are at the top of their game that are not as worldly as their other genre-nites. They do this for love of what they do--making good music. Shoot, even the writers are getting paid. I don't know much about how much each performer is worth especially if they were to perform in your city, they would demand someting before a performance like a cratefull of bottled water and blue M&Ms. But seriously, I would say that it really depends on performers in determining how much they are worth (ask their accountants, if you're lucky!).
Rap artists like 50 Cent, Jay-Z, P. Diddy and others are paid depending on how the sales of their songs or their clothing wear or what kind of venture they have in the works. Rappers, on the other hand do tend to let the money go to their head way too much and then after their success washes out, it all goes downhill (ex: MC Hammer) i.e., if they can keep themselves in check. There are rappers today that have staying power among the 12+ crowd and at the same time act in movies or TV.
As far as royalties are concerned, yes. If writing is a part of their credit, they are paid for that as well, in my opinion (unless someone can back me up details).
As I said, the amount of how these musicians are worth depends on who's managing them, who's handling the accounts and everything else I cannot think of in this topic.

One last question, do artists earn royalties for the number of times there songs are played on the radio? Only if they wrote the song. If not, then no. All of your questions depend on their contracts. Every artist is different. It depends on what their royalty rate is, not to mention how much the label has spent on them and has to recoup before they start making any money.

If they've ever been shown on MTV's "Cribs", it's safe to say they won't be going bankrupt anytime soon.

Have your wallet stolen every other month? This doesn't make sense. If Britney believes downloading is wrong, then wrong is wrong, and her income level has nothing to do with it at all.

Yeah but it just looks stupid.
Why not have someone who just got laid off from a record label talking about how downloading affects the industry?
Just think that would make more sense.

Just think that would make more sense. yup, that i agree with... downloading is wrong, but when you have a filthy rich brat saying "i'm getting robbed every time someone downloads my song." you know it's wrong... let's be honest here, artists get barely anything from cd sales, those amounts have been proven (they get around 5% of each cd... ). If they are popular, when they tour they get major money there.
