This is a topic about singers who have a flop album then say that they are going back to what they used to do before.
How do you all feel about this and does this approach really work?

I hate how when after an album flops every single singers says "I'm going to go back to my first album blah blah blah" or when they come out with a new album they all say "I've grown so much and you can tell' Get over it. All of them need new lines. But i guess if i'm a fan i'd buy anyway.

I think people should reinvent themselves instead of going back to the basics. Its like a new start for them to get new fans, regain their old fans, and keep their present fans

I'd say Madonna kinda did that with her recent Confessions On A Dance Floor. It's kind of a stretch though because her last few albums had a similar sound. But the album really resembled her first album in terms of the retro vibe on many of the tracks. After American Life did quite poorly in the U.S. (it did debut at number one, but it plummeted after that), it seemed that it was going to take a miracle for Madge to do well again. Coming off of such a disaster, she still managed to do pretty well with an album which consisted of music which is not generally popular in the U.S. It was massive overseas.

I admire people like Kylie Minogue, who came back 15 years later, and reinvented her self as a sex goddess, dance queen, and has become one of the biggest selling modern artists in the world.....thats somthing to be proud of.

I cant think of an artist off the top of my head who went back to the sound of their first album after a more recent one flopped. I see more oh suddenly I am pop rock/rhythmic/whatever is more popular at the moment.

U2.
After they released their electronic album "Pop", which is considered U2's worst album and weakest selling, they went back to a more traditional U2 sound with "All That You Can't Leave Behind", and they have had huge success ever since.

There's Jewel. She became a dance diva, but now she went back to her folk roots

The title of this thread is actually a little misleading, IMO. I think with "back to the basics", it actually means going back to an older era, an era with less sythetics and more emphasis on instruments and vocals. With this thread, it more about going back to someone's roots.

I see more oh suddenly I am pop rock/rhythmic/whatever is more popular at the moment. That is a lot more common, basically do whatever's hot at the moment, but a few of them revert back to what they were doing before, after thinking "hey, that's not me" or "that didn't work". On the other hand, I do like artists who try new things or "grow" as an artist, as U2 did with "Pop", even if they don't sell as much as before, but who also will go back to the music with which they feel most comfortable and which brought them success. I think fans usually like to see their favorite artists develop artistically but not stray too far away from their basic sound, or if they do for one album, come back to their original sound in a following album.
