I've been noticing that there are artists that people actually seem to care about, either in general or they have a sizable dedicated floowing--- and yet aren't doing all that well, or only modestly well.
And vice versa, there are artists who are actually getting as many hits as the aforementioned, and yet no one really cares about them overall or they only have a tiny following.
What's up with that??? It's like some people manage to get hits but no one cares. Maybe their material is generic in that anyone could be singing it, so no one actually cares about the individual? Or maybe I'm just out of touch and they're actually really popular with like 13 year olds? (I'm thinking like Marques Houston, who's had a top 10, 2 more top 20s, and 2 more top 40 R&B hits in just the last 3 years--- but who cares????)

I may concede about Twista, but the other two shots?! ??? Yeah, right...
Marques Houston is definitely such a case. As are Jesse McCartney, Ryan Cabrera (except when it's anything Ashlee-related), Akon, The All-American Rejects and Michael Buble.

I don't know about All-American Rejects, they have a pretty big following, and they really aren't that successful to begin with. I'll agree with Ryan Cabrera though.
I would've used to say Black Eyed Peas, they had quite a bit of success but not a huge following, but lately they have really become one of the most popular groups in the country.
I think most people could care less about Ashlee Simpson, when her name gets brought up it's definitely not for anything good.

Frankie J and Baby Bash. They've had some pretty big hits, but when's the last time you met someone who was a huge fan of theirs? Plus, they aren't exactly huge album sellers.

Sugar Ray Fantasia
Definitely agree with 3 Doors Down, Marques Houston, and
Frankie J/Baby Bash are in the middle. Most of their songs, no one cares about (How To Deal, Baby I'm Back, More Than Words, Don't Wanna Try). However, the others (Suga Suga and Obsession) really did have a lot of fans and were at the top of everyone's request lists. This compares to someone like Marques Houston where he's never had any song that actually interested people.

^There's that one forumer with the Jojo avatar! Haha
Probably any of those boring, generic, copy and paste, rehashed bands like Creed, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Bowling for Soup, Fall Out Boy, or Lifehouse.

At the moment, Chris Brown. He's #3 in downloads. I'd say people care.

Probably any of those boring, generic, copy and paste, rehashed bands like Creed, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Bowling for Soup, Fall Out Boy, or Lifehouse. When you sell as many albums as Creed has, I'd say people care. These guys were the biggest band in America for about three years. As for 3DD and Nickelback, they don't have many die hard fans, but their music appeals to people of all ages. They have lots of people who like them, but not many that worship them and heep praise over them like some other artists. Part of the fact is that they appeal to an older crowd. When I saw 3DD two years ago, there were quite a few blue collar people in the 30's and working people in their 20's. Teenagers made up a mnimum of the crowd, which is rare for newer groups. The older crowd isn't as passionate about new bands, just bands they grew up with (as seen with the success of U2, the Stones, and now Bon Jovi). For bands like 3DD and Nickelback, they buy a CD, maybe catch them on tour once but thats about it. No following their every move.

I agree with the first 4 bands you mentioned (even though I care about Nickelback a little bit) but Fall Out Boy has one of the biggest followings I think I've ever seen! They have some real diehard fans, people really love those guys, which I don't understand they're good but not that good! And Lifehouse, I don't think my life would be complete without Lifehouse, I would be so empty sometimes. I agree with Chris Brown, it doesn't matter if he is #3 in downloads, do those people buying really care about him or are they just into his music, I think there is a difference. (Plus, if they really cared they would be buying his whole album not just one song, or at least that's how I feel about it)

Yeah, I think any artist that sells millions of records like Snorah Jones and Creed have people that care about them.
so in that case...I'll say PussyCat Dolls? Two hits so far, but has their album gone platinum?
I agree about Christ Brown, but he's way too new though. We have yet to see how his album will do. I would've said the same thing about Ciara during her time of "Goodies" but she has proven with her sucess that people like her.
and seeing how the Fall Out Boys are more popular with downloads than radio airplay, not to mention their platinum album, I can safely say that they have a good fanbase.

I think Chris Brown is starting to gain a bit of a teenie following, though. I've read about girls talking about how cute they think he is in the teen magazines, and he's getting a TRL presence.

I hate the fact that nobody seems to care about Kelly Clarkson or Mariah Carey, especially around here! Dammit, love them already!!!

Yes, he has a hit, but I thought the point of this thread was if anyone cared about the artist as a person. I thought that too. People like Ciara, Mario, Jojo...they have some big hits, but no one seems interesting in them as a person, they're not relevant in anyway.

5 Grammy Awards, 2 #1 albums, and "no one" cares about her? Please... she's just the opposite in my book - OVERRATED! I'll place Josh Groban, Charlotte Church, and even Michael Buble on the list. TCasual fans - sure. A huge following - absolutely not. And if we were limiting this discussion to Americans, I would definitely place Robbie Williams on that list.

Is it me, or some people here are confusing the point of this thread? I think Bob is talking about artists whose fanbase is NOT big and interested enough to warrant the artists some "popular interest" in them. And I already see some of you talking about personality and such. Personally, I don't think we're discussing lack of starpower here. That's another matter altogeter.

Robbie Williams hasn't had any success in the US, so it's not a case of someone who has done pretty well and people just don't care about them.
Josh Groban's fanbase actually seems pretty huge and devoted to me; he has a large online following and has done a lot of things on TV, so although he doesn't get any radio play outside of AC I don't think he fits into people nobody cares about. I would stick Buble in there though.

Posted by jaxxalude on Today at 12:58pm I agree, it seems like there is more than 1 conversation going on in this thread. I don't even know if I am responding correctly to this thread!
As I see it, I don't think rather or not someone is cute has anything to do with this (in reference to Chris Brown) Just because someone is cute doesn't mean you have to be a fan of them. You could walk up to a lot of women and show them a picture of someone and ask them "Do you think this guy is cute?" And they could say "yes" and not even know who it is and then the interviewer could write about "Girls think Chris Brown is cute!" Maybe I'm just saying this because I hate Chris Brown, but I think I do make a point.

Creed .....These guys were the biggest band in America for about three years. We must be living in two different America's. When were Creed ever THAT big? ??? From late 1999 when "Higher" was flying up the charts until the beginning of the "Weathered" era in early 2002 when they debut with sales of 900,000 copies. These guys were consistently selling out arenas and having huge hits. Which bands were more popular at this point in time (and I mean rock bands here, not boy bands, as BSB & N Sync were probably bigger).

I think Chirs Brown. Everyone likes "Run It!" but I've never actually seen/heard anyone say that they wanted his CD.
