I really never followed chart stats because that doesn't matter to me. I like music period as a form of escapisim...
For example Trina is big in Florida... But she isn't a big artist really anywhere else.
If you live in Florida and listened to any of the R&B/hip-hop stations you would think Trina was selling millions of records and had countless number one hits,etc.,etc.,etc...but that's not the case.
When I started looking at stats it turned out I listened to a lot of flop artists including Pitbull, Khia,etc.,etc.,etc. Artist that are big where I am from.
So I don't really care at the end of the day if someone sold 1999 million records worldwide or 1 record I like music for what it is. It is an art form and sometimes it goes unappreciated because of sales.

It's funny back in 1987 some kid in my 7th grade class over in England asked me this exact question, 'Why are you so obsessed with the charts'? I did not have an answer. I have always been into music trivia and the charts since early 1985 thanks to Walt Love's Urban top 25 Countdown. I used to keep them up each week with the exception of being punished for a couple weeks total throughout the entire time I was keeping track. Unfortunately my mom threw away all those Urban charts from 1985-early 1986 in the trash to reduce the clutter while we were moving to England.

I think watching TRL religiously is what started it, for me. My first monthly (later on bi-weekly) chart debuted October 2002 and ended Februrary 2004. Note that I didn't follow the charts when making my first PC, just my general taste in music when listening to the radio and watching TRL. But I became really intreged by the music charts in winter of 2004, my freshman year of high school. I searched "music charts' on Google, and I remember getting this site and ARC's site. I followed ARC's chart for a few months, until being shocked that it WASN'T US's radio chart. I found that out in the spring of 05. I remember being a guest on this site, looking at the words like "recurrent" and not knowing what ANYTHING meant. I remember thinking that a "peak position" was what position a song was BEFORE the debut. I started my 2nd weekly PC that summer, following the R&R chart. This site basically raptured me to music charts. Thanks guys. :)
