if this discussion has happened before, my bad. I'm kind of new here, just found this message board about 2 months ago and i'm hooked. I've been following Billboard Charts wholeheartedly since 1984. I used to record Casey Casem's countdown on Sunday mornings because I had to go to church, then i'd get home, and listen to the recording, while writing down and listening to the rest of the countdown in real time. In 1986, I was walking in a music store in Fairfax VA, and discovered Billboard magazine for the first time, and couldn't believe that I could actually see positions 41-100. It was awesome. I've pretty much memorized chart positions of songs from 1984-1992. I don't follow them like I used to, mainly because it's not as exciting, and my music taste has changed, and top 40 isn't my favorite music anymore. But I still enjoy watching the charts, and reading what you all have to say about it. I wish this board was around in 1984, I wouldn't have felt like such a freak back then and would have actually had people to talk to about the charts that actually gave a crap  But why is it so fun to follow the charts? |

I don't get why I am so obsessed with it lol.
I just find ranking songs and seeing chart runs and comparing them interesting. I like to see songs that I like, succeed.

i'm assuming for a lot of people it's a great escape from reality. it's unpredictable, and most want to someday have a top 10 hit.

I agree with most of you. It's interesting to see how songs/artists have success or flop. I also like to see music I enjoy succeed (main reason) and what the whole country in general is into. :)

I don't know, I didn't pay any attention to the charts until 2001 when I heard AT40 and then I couldn't help but not listen every week. Then when I found websites with the charts I didn't have to listen to AT40 anymore and then is just sort of went from there. Really, it is like crack for me. I can't go 2 days without knowing what is going on on the charts.

I used to like looking at the charts in the 1990s, but then they became too stagnant. Now that there's more turnover, I'm kind of hooked again.
I like charts because it's the only way to see what the public at large really likes. I know it's not a perfect measure, but it's great for seeing what's popular beyond your little corner of the world.

I like numbers, and it is interesting to see which songs are being released and getting played so I can give the songs a try. I also agree with the above that it is fun to track artists that I personally like to see how they do.

Its an obsessive thing for me...I want to be in the music industry someday, or a painter/artist...I'm mathematical - maybe that's why.
I am also obsessed and worship the UK, ARIA singles chart, Oricon Japanese Charts and the like...

I've memorized hot 100 chart positions starting from 1963. If I wanted to memorize every single Hot 100 chart position (!!) I would probably not be interested in memorizing any songs before like 1998. |

Because in 1994 I got back into listening to popular music, and one morning on my way home from church, At40 was on the radio. When I got home I listened to the rest on my radio because I was so interested in finding out how all the songs I knew were doing. And then I tuned in next week, the week after, and so on. That's pretty much the long story short, although I'm not nearly as "obsessed" now as I used to be.

I like 70's mod soul, 60's pop, Motown,
I don't like eighties music and some nineties, though...

Indian Trance Music
I love manufactured UK/Australian Soap Opera Stars Turned Singers
And a bit of this and that....as well...
I guess I have a lot of time on my hands...but when I'm off suicide watch in less than two months I'll be able to go outisde...Not that I'd really want to.

It's like anything else you have an interest in, sports, history, whatever. If you have a passion for it you want to know all about it. It's like sports standings and stats. The charts are the statistics of music.

It is fun to follow the charts because they are similar to stock markets. Some songs fail while some songs skyrocket.

Urgggghh...I listen to some genres not as widely as others OBVIOUSLY! But why would I say something like taht if I have only listened to one, 2,3 or 4 cd's...Plus, its usually in mp3 bulks...
Some I have 'dabbled' in because I didn't care for them - but I LOVE J-Pop music...music from all over Eurasia, Irish, Portiguese, My favorite music of all time is Northern Soul girl-groups from the 60's...I have at least 10, 000 mp3's just of that...I have too much sixties music to even count...I also like girl-groups from the 60's who were pop, Motown, 70's mod soul, southern soul, psychadelia ...etc. Happy now?
