Be more specific. In other words, give examples of video you think are awful.

Cuz they need to save money cuz a good or bad video rarely makes a difference.

^It can...at least used to. A good video can boost a song's downloads, which can REALLY boost its hot 100 placement. And there are artists who are specifically known as video artists because that sells them more than radio.
Lately videos have been uninspired and bad...I dont quite get why. Its not all about money and budget though...good videos can be made on a smaller budget.

Xtina's, B's, Nelly Furtado's Man Eater, CC's videos are all terrible IMO. I love the songs though. Maybe this is a wave of the future. Good videos take a back seat during these times.

Maybe they figure if nobody's going to play the video, what's the point of doing anything creative. Of course, that's not entirely true, what with Yahoo! Launch, iTunes, MySpace and YouTube all being generous repositories for music videos, which I imagine can probably phase out MTV and VH1 if they don't get their acts together (and if Fuse continues to kick their asses).
But there have still been some great videos this year. "Ever the Same" by Rob Thomas, "Life Wasted" by Pearl Jam, "Move Along" All-American Rejects among others are all in the top class of videos this year, in my opinion. I think my impression, though, is that it seems to be hip-hop videos that tend to be the most homogenous and unimaginative. I mean, Hype Williams' recent outburst of those ugly, split-screen letterboxed videos proves my point. And honestly, I would not be surprised in the least if at least two of those videos got VMA nominations this year.

Most mainstream videos are unimaginative and bland. You have to check out some videos by indie rock bands if you want to be impressed. Though, I have to admit that I am really tired of seeing animated videos in the indie scene.

I was just thinkin this the other day, what ever happened to the "Toxic" "Work It" "Dirrty" type videos. You know, actually interesting ones? I've been let down by all these huge artists' videos. Hopefully Luda can bring some heat with the "Money Maker" video, he's usually pretty innovative.

Ask Beyonce.
What the hell was she thinking? I finally got to see the thing in its entirety, and all I can say is What a mess!
I have noticed a trend of good song-bad video, though.
I wouldn't call the Christina video bad. I think it is kind of appropriate. It could've been a lot better, though. Ultimately, the visual aspect is not important to me. It's all about the music, and I think Beyonce and Christina both delivered.
Though it would be nice to see a good video once in a while...

That Christina Aguilera video reminded me of another trend in music videos I find extremely annoying: credits at the beginning of the video. This isn't a movie. The text in the lower left corner is gonna tell me all I need know. There's no reason to shove it in everyone's face like that; it reeks of pomposity.

I believe the decrease in the artistic quality and originality of music videos is parallel to the fact that artists themselves have far more limited artistic freedom in the studio than they had between the 1950's and 1970's.
The politics of the music business are more in-your-face than they were forty years ago, and the creative process has been stifled in result. Thus, there's your trite, unimaginative music videos.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Its not supposed to be a bash other people's favorite artist topic. This is supposed to focus on the decline of music video quality.

Video directors have run out of ideas without making a cliche video. I agree with most of the ones you listed except Maneater. A dark song deserves a dark video and thats exactly what it is. Only thing they couldve cut out was the dog parts.

I usually like Beyonce's videos but I mean come on she's acting like a total video hoe in it. Britney has never done anything like that such as grabbing a guys balls in a video and then almost going down on him. Yet she gets a bad rep for her videos. Plz Britney actually creates her treatments for her own videos. Every single one of them. That's why they are so good because they are coming from her own ideas. No one these days actually create their own videos. Don't get me started on the mess that is ANOM.

It seems videos are cheaper nowadays. Remember how expensive videos were in the late 90's-early 00's.

The 90s were definetly the BEST era for music videos, imo - especially on the art factor. Though, there are vids today that have a great art appeal to them (the most current one I can think of is Hips Don't Lie).
I do agree that the music videos nowadays looking "cheap". I think the reason why music vids were big budget back in the late 90s early 00's was becuase they all wanted to be "futuristic" for the new millenium. Especially the Britney/NSync/BSB vids from that time. Another factor is that there really isn't anymore SERIOUS choreographed dance moves anymore in vids and that they feature "normal" situations.

I think this is part of the problem. It's definitely possible to make great videos that don't cost 1 million dollars, and many indie artists are very creative with their videos, but a lot of people on major labels seem to be under the mentality that it's still 1999 and doing some derivative shit that would look good with a high budget, but isn't good with the sinking music industry and decreasing sales that gives them less money to make a video. They're trying to do the same thing with less money, so it's crap. There's also less innovation these days in MTV-aired videos...Hype's recent letterbox-filled-with-random-things video series is the last straw.

Sometims you have to look beyond the crap that MTV plays, so that's basically the majority of pop and hip-hop videos of today. Hip-Hop videos are so uninspried and just downright awful. Videos in the rock genre are great though ( Pearl Jam "Life Wasted." All-American Rejects "Move Along" just to name a few) I bet the creator of the thread isn't a fan of rock music and thus has never seen those videos.

I haven't seen alot of the videos because MTV doesn't play them. I like some rock songs like AAR I haven't heard Pearl Jam though. Personally I'd rather have a 1.99 vingle than a 99 cent single. With Ipods these days you can watch the video and listen to the song. I think that's so HOT. You can take your favorite video with you. You are not obligated to watch MTV at 3am to catch a good video. I was introduced to a lot of rock songs through MTV. While rock music isn't my preference, I will shell out the bucks for a good rock single.

Well, the mother MTV and VH1 channels don't play videos anymore. Their specialty channels - MTV Jams and the like - are only available through digital services, which aren't that accessible to any pocket-money. So where does that leave us? The Internet (Yahoo!Music, YouTube, SingingFool, I-Film, etc.) and the I-Pods, of course. But let me ask you something: does it make sense to direct a really OTT/big budget video, when you don't have the right screen size to really match its impact? I think you all know the answer here...

Well IMO the Call On Me video by Janet Jackson is one of the worst I have EVER seen! Especially after reading all the reports on how expensive the video was...i should have seen some breath taking stuff for it to cost that much!!
THAT SONG/VIDEO PUTS ME TO SLEEP! and i am SO tired of the whole parachute-dress thing Hype Williams does!! It didnt work for Mary, it doesnt work for Janet! widkjcnkjenvkjrj i have SO many problems with that video, reminds me of how BAD the JALW video was for Janet. kjmcnwefnvwkjenvkjwrnfkj give me some more ALL FOR YOU JANET! Oops, she's already done that. Just watch Toxic. And buddy, going down on a guy (who's actually going to be your husband soon) isn't that shocking; just watch Britney going down on her bike in I Love Rock 'N' Roll video. What more do I have to say? I'm a huge fan of Britney (of course you won't believe that NOW), but in terms of being a hoe, she's no better than Beyonce or Christina. So please stop going round and talking shit about them 'cause frankly, it's obvious that you hate them more than you hate their videos. And believe me, they do come up with ideas for their videos (just like Britney). It's a shame that none of them could come up with something as genious as ...Baby One More Time video treatment tho. That was great.
