the DJ actually said something on the radio...he played Panic! at the Disco and then kept saying it was Blink 182, Simple Plan, Green Day, and Fall Out Boy b/c all those bands sound the same. Then he talked about giving away All-American Rejects tickets, completely unironically. lmao

I heard Angles & Airwaves song on the radio the other day and I thought it was Blink 182.

maybe that's because the lead singer was in blink 182? ;)

But, seriously, I think if you arent really into a genre of music, it automatically melts together a bit more for you. Rap artists...Ill admit I cannot really tell them apart that well. A song can come on and I will have no idea who it is. But, I have absolutely no problems telling these people apart as soon as one of their songs comes on "Panic! at the Disco and then kept saying it was Blink 182, Simple Plan, Green Day, and Fall Out Boy" In fact, I dont see how ANYONE could say Panic sounds like Blink or Green Day...FOB's vocalist is really, really distinct to me, and Simple Plan and Panic kind of remind me of each other, but have such different styles and production values. But I am also a bigger emo/rock/pop rock lover than anything else so obviously I can probably hear differences better than someone who doesnt listen to rock/alternative radio.

I can personally tell them all apart for the most part, but I just thought it was funny how the DJ kept saying that because it reminded me of this

Just an aside: I just read in a review in Rolling Stone that definitively said that Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional had the best voice of any EMO artist. I never really liked his voice personally. Not really into EMO, but I do like FOB a lot! But I wouldn't call them EMO since they are so poppy and mainstream, IMO. I like Jimmy Eat World too.

The singers of Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, and Brand New all sound pretty similar - and of course, they also all have the long and wordy titles, and wordy lyrics as well. I definitely like BN the most out of all of those bands - FOB's music is a little too poppy for my liking, while P!ATD's music just sounds contrived to me.

Jesse Lacey of Brand New sounds like Patrick Stump and Brendon Urie? Hell No! :o You're probably talking about the wrong singer/band. He's definitely the best singer out of this particular genre. His voice is I dunno, "manlier"? or deeper without that generic whine we hear with the rest of the other bands.

Me too. I like their songs and vocals.
This thread cracked me up when I saw it, because a friend and I were just talking last week about how we think the singers for PatD and FOB sound a lot alike. Simple Plan too. Unfortunately, it's not a vocal sound I like much, even though I like some of the music otherwise.

I like Panic!, FOB, Hush Sound, Paramore (but their lead is a woman) & that kinda band, but I listen to pop more.

Most emo stuff does sound alike to me. The lead singers of FOB and Panic! At The Disco literally sound the same. But I like their songs so it's alright lol.
But the DJ mentioned above who grouped Green Day in with them must be deaf.

Yes, all emo singers sound alike. At least there aren't as many random emo bands as there are random rappers.

I would have to disagree that they sound alike totally. There are a few, I'll admit, that do sound the same, but not overall. I just find it funny how bands who were popular 2+ years ago are being labeled as "emo" now. A friend of mine thought Lostprophets and Evanesecence were emo. Which is really funny

I have nothing personally against emo artists in general; it's just that genre of music lacks surprise and innovation, and when you listen to it so much like you do the same old blues riff in blues music over and over again, it's easy to see how uninspiring the music is just weeks after you first hear it.
It may sound really funny saying this, but I think in some ways, emo music is like the blues of this generation. What I mean by that is that you have all these different artists adopting a familiar rhythm or chord progression, singing in a familiar kind of voice, and then completing the product with your own lyrics and such which most oftenly rest on emotional themes, particularly heartbreak. Whereas rock and roll, R&B, jazz and world music are names of genres which are wide and diverse and can be played in many different ways, sub-genres like emo, reggae and rap are like "stationary genres", where the rules are far more strict in those sub-genres.
So I really have nothing personally against emo bands and such, as everyone needs to find some sort of emotional outlet and such musically and lyrically; it's just sometimes it baffles me why some buy all these emo CDs, as in the long-term I just don't see how having dozens of CDs that sound quite similar are going to inspire.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Which is really funny Evanescence is definitely not emo, I agree. The Lostprohets though kinda are. Have you seen the "Rooftops" video? Totally overdramatic stuff there and the song doesn't help either. The lead singer even has long dark hair covering his face. I have nothing personally against emo artists in general; it's just that genre of music lacks surprise and innovation, and when you listen to it so much like you do the same old blues riff in blues music over and over again, it's easy to see how uninspiring the music is just weeks after you first hear it. Weren't you the one that called The Postal Service's music a mix of light-techno and emo? ??? Sounds pretty innovative to me.

Most emo artists certainly are rather stereotypical with their sound, but it doesn't mean there are some who tweak and play with the sound a bit, which The Postal Service indeed do. Something Corporate are another good example. Some songs are more generically "emo", like "If You C Jordan", but there's a great maturity both musically and lyrically with the band that puts them above other emo artists in general, where they also adopt a Billy Joel sort of appeal, or even Cheap Trick from a musical standpoint. "Globes And Maps" and "The Astronaut" are great examples of that on "Leaving Through The Window". I'm sure there may be an emo artist that comes along and blends the familiar sound with samba sounds or acid jazz, maybe even Arabic instruments. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Emo is just a label anyways..
I don't think Brendon Urie and Patrick Stump sound alike.
