Does anyone else think that their local radio station has a payola deal with Rihanna? Despite the crackdown from Spitzer, I think it's obvious the practice still exists. My local station's morning team (in central PA) plays Rihanna multiple times every single morning, and the listeners are fully aware of it. When the U.K. banned James Blunt because listenerers were tired of always hearing his songs, the said station above decided to run their own "who are you sick of" contest, and they agreed to ban the singer from their morning show for the rest of the week (3 days). Rihanna won that poll. But come Monday morning, they started playing her again.
But now it's getting so bad that on Tuesday of this week, they played "If It's Lovin' That You Want" at 7:40am and then they played "Unfaithful" at 8:10am! I mean, c'mon, it just seems very obvious that payola is going on here.

WIHT (DC) oddly plays A LOT of Rihanna. I've heard all 4 of her singles on the radio in the last week.

I'm not sure. Her album isn't really selling, but a hell of a lot of people have downloaded her singles, meaning that there is some actual interest from real people...

I doubt it. Her singles were just pop hits right when you heard them.

IDK - Beyonce, Sean Paul and JLO and a lot of those 'indie' rock bands, yeah. Maybe...

I wouldn't be surprised if every song on the charts has some amount of payola being put into it.

I download "SOS" as well. I don't think that payola is needed for her.

I think some people are being a tad too naive. I never seen an artist so PUSHED by her label as much as Rihanna has in this past year.
I like some of her songs, but what turns me off about her is that I feel like she has little control over her career. The interviews I read from her and some of her career moves make me feel this way. I feel like Jay Z who signed her was destined to make her a star. He's the one who told her to release an album less than 9 months after the first one. He's the one who probably told her to sample "Tainted Love" in "S.O.S."
Added to the fact that her album sales are very low for the amount of hits she has had, there is no doubt in my mind that she is getting payola.
Ofcourse she is not the only artist. I agree with what someone says that almost every artist is receiving some payola.

Naive about what? Everyone gets payola, but I dont see Rihanna getting much more than others. Her album sales are low. So? Her digital sales are really good. People see Rihanna as a singles artist, and dont really see value in the album right now. That could change. The PCD album wasnt selling that well when Dont Cha and Stickwitu were hits, but by the time Buttons became a hit, the album was selling well enough to re-enter the Top 10.

She's hot right now. I doubt its payola cause her songs were hits from the start.

I wouldn't be surprised if "SOS" was heavily payola-ed considering how bad the sales were for her first album.

Im not sure if payola is the only reason her songs were massive hits. SOS was just a catchy, fun song to hear on the radio. Innoculous without being too boring... I mean, Im sure she got some, but I also think real people did like the song and it was the perfect little pop song to play at the time.

Most of the posts in this topic are saying "S.O.S." did well because the song was catchy and good. I would think we would all know by now that just because a song is "good" doesn't guarantee it commercial success. This year alone there have been numerous amazing songs that never took off. Radio politics are a huge factor these days unfortunately.

I think its safe to say that almost ALL Island/DJ artists get payola. Most Major record label artists for that matter. Also, those fake Indie record companies like Bad Boy and FOB/P!ATD's labels also payola. Who cares...There's so much payola going around, that it almost makes it fair.
