I remember a time when if radio didn't like a single released by the artist they would play another song in its place. Radio used to lead record companies and artists to what singles songs the audience liked the most. What happened to this?

That kind of happened with the Backstreet Boys with their last record I think (?) and I guess Kelly Clarkson's "Gone" getting more airplay than "Walk Away" in some markets.

That has always happened with the Urban format, and it still continues to happen. But it has not really happened all that much at pop in recent years... I kind of like it when records become hits that way.

this actually happened with "My Humps". a station in Hawaii started playing it even though "Don't Lie" was the formal single at the time, and the label had to run with it and shoot a video because it was overshadowing the actual single.

That's happening now with Nelly F.'s "Maneater." I'm aware that everyone (including Dj's) pretty much knew Maneater would easily be next, but Nelly could've easily changed her single last minute. Yet radio stepped in and started playing Maneater with no scheduled adds date whatsoever.

Pop radio used to be more forward in doing bold things like this. This type of stuff is what gave Pop radio ratings and an identity.

It was a Philly station (WRDW) with Miami (WPOW) running close behind, but close enough.

Adonis, Urban radio seems to be playing Upgrade U a lot. Is this what you mean? I wonder if they could pull a "My Humps" and "overthrow" RTA
