I agree with much of what was said above.
By the time the solo efforts by the individual Spice Girls came out, their wave of popularity had passed. A single by the group wouldn't have succeeded, much less by each of them individually. Plus none of them were great vocalists on their own. Even "Sporty Spice", who had the strongest voice, struggled as a solo artist. It didn't help that they sang British pop, and those only crossed over sporadically.
All the solo efforts did slightly better in Canada than the States, though. Mel C. and Geri Halliwell both had singles on the charts.

I might add that "Free Me", in all it's Swinging London 60's pop glory, despite being the best pop album in years, didn't have a shot at US mainstream radio. We only masturbate to urban/rhythmic trawl pop here, didn't you notice?

And her new album looks like it's going to be great, too. "Downtown" is what I expected it to be...an effective homage to her current heroine, Petula Clark.
